I dont have one and dont intend to get one. First gen? We use newer ones in the Guard, and anything older wouldn't satisfy me. I just have no use for a NV scope for my personal rifle.I cannot justify that expense.

Same here. I hate to "settle" for a cheaper version of something because I can't afford the real deal. If I ever inherit some money or something I'd probably buy a decent Gen III.

Ditto.  I'm an 'all or nothing' kind of guy.

I would like an NVD, but if I did get one I'd have to go PVS-14.  I don't think it's worth $3000+ to get a PVS-14, because I would use for fun a couple times and then it would sit in my safe gathering dust until something newer and better came along in the NVD market.

And if I DID get a PVS-14, I would need to get a PAQ-4C or PEQ-2 to go with it.  That's several thousand more down the drain.

IMHO NVDs are just toys for the guys that already have everything else...

That pretty much sums it up for me, too. I'd like some night vision stuff to work with, but there are too many of the basics to deal with first...

Me!

Its a lot of money for something that has relatively few uses. It would be great for the ranch but....

Besides the prices for ones that offer some kind of definetion etc are steep.

Can't afford the Gen 3, and frankly I really don't have a need.

Not been able to rationalize the $ for all of the other firearm necessities.  Maybe in the next half dozen years I will end up with something.  I've come to realize that good scopes could run the price of the rifle.

So, what's a decent, LOW COST, Gen I or II scope (not monocular)?  Links?

I don't solely because I have absolutely no use for it.

nope
I can't justify the cost for the little bit of use it would get. actually it'd get none. I don't have anyplace to go shoot at night. if I ever decide to spend money on NV it will be on some sort of goggle system or handheld unit since I might actually use that for non gun stuff too

Night hunting is a possible good use for one.  I can buy the more inexpensive quality guns (think Rock Island Armory, not Lorcin/Jennings/etc), but if you go higher than those, you outprice me.

Don't have any, have no idea what kind of money we are talking here. I wouldn't know a good price for NV if it bit me on the ass.

I have a Gen I night vision monocular but not a scope. I can't rationalize spending that amount of money on one ACCESSORY when I could buy 2, 3 or 4 FIREARMS for that kinda jack.

OTOH, if I won the lottery, I'd have all the latest, greatest NVDs.

I don't use the monocular as often as I thought I would when I bought it, so a night vision scope for a firearm looks pretty unneeded.

IT'S A STEYRAUG THREAD...  OF COURSE THERE'S GOING TO BE A GROUP BUY!!!

Depending upon the price, and my available finances, a discounted price, and the quality of the optics...I might be interested though.  Can't pass up a good opportunity to get decent night vision.

I've used a Gen1+ russian scope a few times. It works better than I expected. Much better than the older NV I 've tried years ago. It is commonly available in the ~$500 range.

My TA01 greatly outperformed it (dusk+) until it got REALLY dark (cloudy, no moon night). Then, NV rules.

A point to consider for you flashlight only guys- with NV, you can see the bad guy-a long ways off, especially with your IR burst. He probably won't be able to see you UNLESS he has NV. IR projected from another optic really stands out through your own NV. One use of your flashlight immediately lets a BG know where you are. I think I've also heard flashlights described as "bullet magnets."

Basic Gen I weapon scopes that aren't complete crap, or won't blind you like Russian surplus, start around $600. I like the Aries 390 Paladin for my all purpose NV. The Gen III stuff can cost 3-4 times as much as the rifle. It is nice but I cannot justify it, Gen I actually covers my needs.

Thanks for the info. Looks like it is out of my 'discretionary funds' range right now. I did just send off for a CMP M1. Playing the waiting game now.

That's exactly the reason I don't have NV. Most recommendations go along the lines of 'if it ain't Gen 3, it's shit'. Well, considering where I live, and the ranges I go to, I'd have maybe an avenue of about 20 minutes a week to use it. $3000+  for 20 minutes a week, when I can find the time, is economically unsound. Hell, 1400 for a Gen 2 for that amount of time isn't eactly logical. And I'd hate to drop 700 or so on a Gen I only to find it sucks, even though my shooting rarely goes beyond 100 yards, and never beyond 200.

Best thing that most NVG companies/sales don't seem to have is real comparison pics of the different models. Something where you can get a good objective view of what they will look like, to make a decision.

How good are those digital night vision displays are?I know they only work with a ir light but you may be able to scan your area with the ir light off before turning yours on. Then you will light up like a christmas tree to those passive night devices.I am still thinking about getting one.

After using a PVS-14 I couldn't go back. I did have a Gen II scope but I never used it. If I ever get the money to blow I will pick up a 14 with the weapons mount and run around the woods at night. But first is the A4gery, SPR, Barrett M82 ...
