Sounds like you are using win98 or winME? A better way to check how loaded down your are would be to right click on my computer, choose the performance tab and see what your percentage of resources are free....
If you decide you need to shut some of those off, you can go to run (in the start menu) and type msconfig Under the startup tab, you can disable unnecessary stuff. I am using XP pro on this box, I have 37 "processes" running but it is not really good to compare an NT based box to a win98 box. |

It depends on how old your PC is. If it was purchased with Win98 on it, you may find a lot of components won't run under XP. This is especially true of modem/sound/video controllers. When XP came out, a lot of vendors stopped writing drivers for for their old hardware. If you do decide to upgrade an old hardware platform, you'll have to research all the components of our PC and download XP compatible drivers and have them available when you upgrade.

If you mainly just use it for internet related stuff, it is probably a waist of time and $$ for you. As neilfj said, older pc's will not run XP, which meens hardware upgrade. If you are having problems trying to run an application or a game then I would say yes, time to upgrade.. Although the min requirements for XP are lower that what I am about to say, I wouldn't run XP on anything less than a P3 750 and 512mb ram (384 is pushing it) or it will be a real dog.

Yes but your current machine isn't fast enough. The good news is for less than $500 you can get a machine that is five times faster than your current one, has better security, and running an operating system that you're going to have to learn any way (less you plan on dying in the next year or so). |

24 is way to many for just surfing around. I have about 8 running now, including web browser, popup stopper, and my printer / fax program.
You need to do a little research on a nifty windows program called msconfig. There's a website that has almost all the programs that can be run from startup. With that list you can decide what you need/ want to be started up and go from there. msconfig is a freaking miracle for older windows versions. Every time I do an install or work on someone's computer, I run msconfig after all the software is installed to tune up the system. And it has even made running windows ME - *gasp* - stable-. Really. |

Most of the shit running in the background is probably ad-ware/spyware.
Download and run Spybot and Ad-aware. Make sure you run their respective updaters after you install them. After helping hundreds of customers with the exact same problem I can almost assure you that these should solve your problems. If you do still have problems IM me a list of the stuff running and I'll help further. |

HELL NO! Unless you buy a whole new PC, or upgrade the RAM/Motherboard/CPU/Video first! Rule of thumb: If the OS was released after the PC was discontinued, DO NOT RUN THAT OS ON THAT PC. Win98 era machines should run Win98 SE or Windows NT 4.0 Windows ME era machines should run Windows 2000 Windows XP should only run on PCs that were available new at the time XP was released (2001) New OS + Old PC -=> SLOW No exceptions. Microsoft hype aside, a new OS will NOT make your PC run faster, except MAYBE if it's a milestone-OS (eg if you switch from Windows XP to Windows XP 64bit on your AthlonXP/Opteron, or Win 3.1 (16bit) to Win 95 (32bit, mostly) back in 1995) ... Disregard this, and you WILL bog down your box, which WILL lead to you buying a new box, or formatting your hard disk (XP upgrades are NOT reversable). |

Oh, and CTRL+ALT+ESCAPE does much better, there are 52 running on the WinXP box. but 10 of them are paranoid filters that keep me from seeing half the stuff posted... |

You can run XP on older systems. Dave_A is wrong, I am running XP on a box that first had 98 on it and XP is much faster and more stable than 98 ever was. I have a P3 500 with only 256 megs of ram and my computer runs XP just fine.
I will say that if your just surfing the net then don't bother to upgrade your system. It is a waste of money, and I bet if you clean up the programs that start up with your computer and kill some spyware you old PC will be buzzing along as fast as ever. |

I'm going to have to do the msconfig thing again and stop some of the programs from starting.
Just checked, and it says I only have 36% free system resources!  Holy crap, it was never anything like that before! Haven't checked in a while.

If you are planning to run a Micro$oft based product on your system, upgrade to a 3Mhz+ processor, 1GB ram, and at least 120GB hard drive. Otherwise, you will complain about the speed. Plus, your better equipment will help the virii you M$ products are vulnerable to. This saves much time looking at the hourglass. It is okay though, it is only at the expense of others. Yes, I am posting from a WinXP machine right now. Just to spite them. CTRL+ALT+F1 gets me back to unix.
