I have seen several threads stating not to use them to wipe down guns, I wish to know why?

Because red rags belong to your dad, and he'll be pissed if you get gun oil on them.

i dont know any reason for other guns, but i know bushmaster says to use a plain black rag on their guns because if you use any other color then you will see colored spots after cleaning because of the sandpaper like properties of the receiver finish. I dont know if all ar15's are like this or not. and as for other guns, like i said i dont a reason why not.

Not sure why red rags are particularly bad but the lint might be one reason. I do know that the cloth "recycled" shop rags can have all sorts of residue/foreign materials on them, up to and including metal shavings. some of these could mess up the finish on a gun.

Red shop rags work great on my FN.  The CZ-75 will pick up a little lint from them, on the top of the slide.

They are used by machine shops and may have metal chips in them. Not good to wipe down anything you do not want scratched up.

After forgetting eight BLACK rags inside the mustang's engine  a few months ago (because they were harder to see than the red ones) I'm only using red rags for everything these days.

Exactly what I was thinking!  Same goes for the WD-40, brake cleaner, etc....
