Dutch royal family had several DAF YP-408 Armoured Personnel Carriers attached to them in case they had to be evacuated when the Cold War would turn “hot”. They were basically the same as the regular army vehicles, but they had ashtrays installed

It's a boat, no it's a truck, no it's Super Man  a LARC-V. Replaced the DUKW (Duck) in 1963. Still in use in the Navy with Beach Masters and Under Water Construction Teams, the hulls are all Vietnam era production. The much bigger LARC-LX (LARC-60) is long retired.

They were a blast when surf busting on the California coast, if you hit the wave just right the spray/wave would clear the stern.  The windshields are 2" laminated glass and have been known to bust out when the force of a wave hit them at speed. We rigged up an "armor" plate with a small slit in it for the driver to cover the front windshield when we went from beach to sea.

The old girls were getting hard to keep running when I worked on and drove them as parts are about all used up. 1/2 of my 24 vehicle fleet was strictly for donor parts, we even raided some static displays for parts. A SLEP program has extended the life of some of the hulls (42 hulls according to the interwebs).

I did not know that they heat-treat armored vehicles in the as-assembled condition! Holy shit that is a huge oil bath!  Is that steel hella-high in hardenabilty?

What do the tempering and austenitizing furnaces look like?!

Edit:  derp - I see one coming out of the austenitizing furnace back there.

That'd be cool

Mid 1990s when I was stationed at NAS Norfolk the Army still had a few LARC-60s in service. They used to float across the bay from Fort Eustis and use the old WW2 Seaplane ramps on NAS Norfolk for practice. They are huge for an amphibious truck, you can squeeze a couple 2 1/2 trucks side by side in the well.

Used to drive / was assigned a gama goat 1985-1987, Ft. Polk.
Was fun to take off road, 6 x6, 4 wheel steering, not so much fun to maintain.
Ill try and find a pic I have of it, one below was pulled from the web.

How's your hearing?

Ok except for tinnitus, there’s a you tube channel that has various frequencies, I can crank the 11,000 hertz tone way up and not hear a thing.
Kids and wife are screaming “ wth! turn that off!”
I used hearing protection most of the time when driving it.
Not every time however.
Thing was definitely a screamer at moderate to high (relative) speed.
3 cylinder, 2 stroke diesel sitting right behind you.

@fightinghellfish

Here’s the story on it but long story short it was a modified WW2 German SdKfz 254 used to drive across the boarder between Czechoslovakia and Germany to escape the iron curtain.

Afterwards it was used to raise funds for Radio Free Europe, was on the Ed Sullivan show and somewhere along the line ended up in a farmers field. My friend happened upon it and bought it for basically scrap price. He still owns it but is in poor shape and stored away.

The base vehicle is very odd in that it had road wheels with rubber tires that could drop down to drive it on normal roads or retract up to drive on the tracks. They are very rare now and I have heard there are only two in existence, one of which is the modified “Czech Freedom Tank”.

Here is what it used to look like before being modified for the escape

Me neither, but it makes sense if you think about it.  If you weld treated steel, you lose the heat treat - gotta get it back.

I'm curious how they kept dimensional tolerances - or did they just do all of the final machining after heat treating?
