Those big magnums are a hoot to shoot! Had a customer come into the range awhile back with a S&W 500 magnum. We all got to shoot a couple of rounds throughit. It really wasn't that bad as the gun is HEAVY, but that's an asset in recoil mitigation. Really didn't feel that much different than a 44 mag in something like a Redhawk. Awesome fireball and muzzle blast will always bring a great big s&*^ eating grin to your face though

Love these big boomers! Had a Magnum Research BFR in 460 S&W Magnum, but had to sell it to fund another gun. Currently still have my 4" 500 S&W and will not sell that.

I too have the 4" 500 S&W and it's a lot of fun to shoot! We had a .460 come into the Shop: Lost the front sight, ordered one from S&W and it was ~$65. wtf! The owner had never shot .460 out of it only .454 Casull so we ordered some in and I'll "test fire" it for safety sake.

I never felt the need for one of those. I have a tried and true Model 29, but if I need to light off something insane. I can always break out my big Dan .44. She dwarfs an N frame, and is a heavy old bitch. She's been set up for silhouette.

I have had one for about 14 years. Always an attention magnet at the range.
Last year when I took it to the range a group of people were arriving for a concealed carry class just as we were leaving and my brother-in-law asked to shoot it while they were there (they all had on hearing pro since the range was active when they arrived). Seeing the look on those people's faces was priceless. I never shot factory ammo in it until last year when I found some Hornady on sale at Midway.  Attached File |

The 500 gets the nod for being "biggest" but the ballistics of the 460 and the ability to shoot lighter factory ammo choices has lots going for it.
Choose what floats your boat. Lets face it, very few of us have a need for such power, possibly a serious hunter. Most who buy the 460 or 500 buy it just because they can and want something crazy to play with. Don't get me wrong , "want" is very much a good reason . |

How is recoil compared between .460 and .500? Using comparable ammo (middle of the range for each) or using the same weight.

I have a 460V.
I want a 500V if they make one. And a 357 max if S&W would get off their ball bags and make one. Six shot thanks. Also the fucking stupid lock will never work on my 460V again.

I wish somebody would do a .460M/.45Casul/.45Colt lever gun that wasn’t a $3k boutique gun.
It would be an extremely versatile gun. You could damn near any kind of shooting with it. I suppose it could even use .410 shells, but the rifling would fuck with the patterning of shot loads, and slugs would be pointless. |

I stopped her just in time, it would have been nasty, not as bad as a .460 but bad enough. I had shown her the proper grip but she adjusted because she thought it was too heavy to hold that way. She was hardheaded like that, I wish that Miculek video was around then. |

I shot the 4 inch 500 Smith a few cylinders worth, when Smith came to our range for a special range day. It wasn't low recoil, but it was not terrible. The worst thing I have done was shoot a Lone Eagle in 30/06 10 times at bowling pins. The top of my wrist was seriously hurting for days, like a sprain. 500 was about half as bad.
We had a deer hunter sighting in his 44 Magnum a few year back, he was shooting off the carpeted rests to sight his scope on, and he extended his hand along the cylinder. The cut wasn't down to the bone but it was deep and bled a lot. |

At 100 yards it hits like a ton of bricks. Haven't shot further than that. We hung a 3/4" steel plate on a wooden range target and it nearly knock the whole thing down. Haven't shot it in a few years though almost forgot about it in the back of the safe. |
