Here is a pre-ban that I was considering selling but I just love them too much to part with!! Thanks! I don't have enough room on my computer to load my Fireworks program and I don't want to bother setting up a picture hosting service when the university I attend gives me FREE server space!![:d] |

Sorry if I confused anyone but that isn't..er..wasn't my rifle. I had it saved on my harddrive to show some fellow weapons instructors at work. I read the article on the cause of the kb. To make it short and sweet the primary reason for the failure was metal fatigue and microscopic cracks in the barrel. At least thats the way I read it.

That M1A which was destroyed had an aftermarket barrel with NO MARKINGS.

The metallurgist's review of that kaboom concluded it was probably an improper heat-treatment of the aftermarket barrel. They found the grain structure of the metal was inferior, causing stress cracks over time that eventually led to the catastrophic failure. The barrel was old and well-worn, and the owner couldn't remember who made the barrel. It had no markings, either. Don't buy cheap parts from bargain-basement sources!

Actually Ed I've been experimenting on ways to lighten the weight of the M1. I use mine to hunt snow snakes and it gets extremely heavy after carrying it for 4 to 5 hours. However I lightened the above rifle a bit to much. The recoil from firing the 375 gr BTHP needed to knock down a full grown bull snow snake is unbelievable. I do most of my hunting from a tree stand and recoil management is very important as I've been knocked out of my stand before using a 700 Nitro Express. The only thing that saved me was my fall arrest harness and the fact I killed the snow snake with the first shot. I'll keep you posted in the results of my research.[;)]

Well Pony boy your not ignorant of anything because there is no such thing as snow snakes[:)] That is an old war story we use to tell recruits on winter warfare exercises. We combines the worst characteristics of rattlers,cobra's, water moccasins and any other snake that came to mind and warned them to check their sleeping bags, mukluks and artic mittens because snow snakes seek out warm dark places to sleep and breed. According to us Sergeants (who know everything and are never wrong[:D])the venom from a full grown snow snake will render a male impotent and unable to "rise to the occassion". We would wait until 2 or 3 am and barge into a 5 man tent hollering that there was a snow snake in the tent. You should have seen them go..running in circles in their underwear at minus 15 below looking for a white snake in the snow[:D] Ahh the good old days. |

He has quite a few different patterns, no complaints about the quality. The scope is an ATN 6-18X65. Don't listen to these guys; snow snakes are a REAL THREAT.
I remember hunting Snipe back in the boy scouts. Almost got bit by one of the buggers, luckily I got outta the way. Those are some fast little bastards, too...I don't suggest going and finding them. Of course, the Snipe never seemed to be around when the Troop leaders weren't around: it's like some strange conspiracy. If I were you, I'd worry about Snow Snakes, Snipes, and all those other things out there that you've never seen but have heard people warning you about. DON'T GO OUT UNPREPARED! Jewbroni~ |

I put a cheap GI fiberglass stock on mine, the "real" bi-pod would have nicked the beautiful oversized walnut. All I really want now is the E-2 stock...
