The Official Bourbon Thread (Page 1 of 116)

It seems that nearly every week someone starts a thread asking for a bourbon recommendation, to ask what others are drinking, etc. I thought it would be nice to have an ongoing thread where people can ask questions, post pictures, share information, reviews and more.

Tonight, I’m starting off by finishing off the last of a bottle of an entry level bourbon, Old Forester 86 proof. I keep quite a few varieties on hand including a couple lower proof budget bourbon for making cocktails for my wife and guests.

I bought a couple of bottle today and needed to make room in my cabinet so I’m emptying these last of a couple of these basic pours. For a $20 bourbon, OF86 is not bad at all. Nice spicy vanilla on the nose with a hint of floral. Smooth and slightly sweet on the tongue as you might expect from the lower proof. Very short finish with a bit of lingering cinnamon.

Eagle Rare used to be my go-to.  In the last year, though, it’s become very hard to find where I live.  It’s insane, because if I cross into Maryland it’s still readily available.  Will give Knob Creek a try though.

Just finished a glass of Old Forester 1920. It’s been my go to favorite as of late.

Managed to snag a Weller Full Proof on a Father’s Day special today. A BIT of a unicorn around here anyway.

I didn't really like the woodford double oaked. It was too sweet for me.  The beam double oaked was meh.

I like the normal Woodford.

Knob is great. Single barrel Knob is better.

With the recent difficulty finding Buffalo Trace and Wellers unless I want to drive 20 miles to the store that seems to get it fairly often, Beam Black and Old Grandad 101 are pretty much my go-to's at this point.

Nothing wrong with that. I had some earlier.

Larceny or Bulleit are always here, though we like to pick up new stuff to try too.

Here is my blantons collection.  The green and gold were very hard to come by.

I’ll have to post a Weller pic next

A big BT fan I take it?

I am.  Very much so.  I’m having some knob green single barrel rye at the moment and it’s blissful

WSR is pretty good when you can find it at msrp. Actually all of the Weller's are nice. Kind of hard to find here as well. My go to shop almost always has Stagg Jr and Eagle Rare. He gets quite a bit from BT. I just picked up another bottle of Stagg Jr as the other is almost gone. 128 proof and still good neat.

Tonight I’m sipping a bit of Eagle Rare 10 year. This is an outstanding bourbon for the price. I can’t think of another even close in price that has such a distinct three phases of flavor. Almost syrupy sweet caramel for the first couple seconds, then firey hot cinnamon and pepper followed by a dry, deep oak finish.

Totally agree, one of the best barrel proofs out there, and not overhyped. I will say, there’s a pretty strong banana flavor.

Previously had some Heaven Hill green label.

Now I'm sipping on Trader Joes High Rye Bourbon and Coke Zero.

Next up on deck is either Jack Single Barrel or Russell Reserve Single Barrel.

WT101 is one my desert island bourbons.

I set my first glass of it down and never picked it back up cuz I hated it. Second glass, 3 years later, I couldn't get enough.

Ezra Brooks, WT101, George Dickel 8, those are the most distinctly flavorful basic bourbons on the market right now.

If you like Rye, try the Woodford Reserve.

I like it. There are better for the cost though, IMO. Not as bitey as some, and not as much of a long finish. A chunk of ice really opens it up.

Shhh, don't tell anyone how good these are, they will start to disappear.  Seriously though I bought a standard off the shelf RRSiB and it's one of my favorites right now. Just popped open my father's day gift from my wife, Old Forester 1920 and it's very good too. I also picked up an Elijah Craig barrel proof B520 Friday, currently have B519 but have been hearing good reviews about the latest batch.

My liquor guy threw this in with my order to try. Anybody had it? Distilled in WA. Good smell and taste. A bit heavy on the backend with rye. My wife said it tasted sour. I didn't taste that though. Reminds me a bit of EC.
