The Official Bourbon Thread (Page 1 of 116)
Arrow Left Previous Page
Page / 116

It seems that nearly every week someone starts a thread asking for a bourbon recommendation, to ask what others are drinking, etc. I thought it would be nice to have an ongoing thread where people can ask questions, post pictures, share information, reviews and more.

Tonight, I’m starting off by finishing off the last of a bottle of an entry level bourbon, Old Forester 86 proof. I keep quite a few varieties on hand including a couple lower proof budget bourbon for making cocktails for my wife and guests.

I bought a couple of bottle today and needed to make room in my cabinet so I’m emptying these last of a couple of these basic pours. For a $20 bourbon, OF86 is not bad at all. Nice spicy vanilla on the nose with a hint of floral. Smooth and slightly sweet on the tongue as you might expect from the lower proof. Very short finish with a bit of lingering cinnamon.

For its current price,  I'm not a fan.   Like you said,  it's missing some depth.  I'd rather get EW BiB for half the price

I have a trip to N Myrtle Beach coming up in a few weeks (no, not my first choice). Any of you in SC know of any good stores in that area that carry a good bourbon selection?

Yes in Ohio.  I've never seen it either, even when ER and BT was readily available.

I drank it for the first time in May, but that was a bottle my dad picked up when I visited him in FL.

Really enjoying a Woodford Reserve store pick from a local place.  Enough so that I already snagged a backup bottle.

I’ve come to understand that hits well above its weight class - all the way up with Saz BTAC and some of the Michter’s.

Never seen one here. We get MWND and Rare Breed BP Rye though, so we’ve got a few good substitutes.

Other than a mostly finished bottle of Axe Handle Rye, these are my only bourbons.

WR was signed by the master distiller in 2011.

ETL was bought a week after his passing in 2013.

Axe Handle was visited at the beginning of this month on a business trip with my wife.

I have done similar since I had covid in January - My taste and smell are still messed up, and I just don't get as much enjoyment out of it as I used to.    I'm hoping I will get my senses back!

Found Wild Turkey Rare Breed at Walmart today for $45.95.
Well …..there was a spot / label for it but none on the shelf.

Crazy side note - they had a bottle of King Louis XIII in the locked case…..

~$45 with tax.

Last bottle of it I found was at a Total Wine for $23. Couldn't believe it.

Costco rotated through all three versions last year as well.  I love the BiB and the Small batch. Not as much of a Fan of the single barrel that should be on the shelf next.  I stocked up pretty well and hope it's back before a year

Buffalo Trace and Weller are so odd.

I hear here on GD, and elsewhere, that they are as hard to find as a lot of allocated stuff in many areas.

But near me I can get it any day of the week for retail. Not a brag just weird. I traded some to another GDer a while ago.

Nice score.

Really @t75fnaco3pwzhd  ?  What state do you live in?  We get it about every 5 weeks, give or take.  It's managed, but it can be found.  I have stopped buying it all together, I need to mail in my toppers to get the free stave.  I've got 90% of an open bottle and I think one backup.  Can't find the unicorns for shit this month though.

I have only seen Blanton's for sale one time around here. And it was $199. Only time I see it is for use in store raffles. You won't see it in the shelf otherwise. Same with EHT, Weller, Eagle Rare, even BT has been getting tough to find here.

Got a new cabinet for my collection. Not all bourbons, but all good. I picked up a High West double rye that was finished in rum barrels today, it's quite good. Smoke Wagon Uncut and Unfiltered is my current favorite. Still chasing the elusive Eagle Rare in the DFW area.

My go-to used to be Eagle Rare, but it became unobtainium a couple of years ago.   So I switched to Henry McKenna 10... then that disappeared.

Virginia made products are on sale this month in VA ABC....   I like John J Bowman a lot, but it's overpriced...   At 20% off I decided fuck it, I'll stack it deep and stop chasing allocated whiskey for a while.

Anything from Buffalo Trace is non-existent in my AO of East Tx. Thinking of trying some Calumet these days off. Maker's is starting get get a bit old for me.
