A code update for the forums just went into effect. A few things were corrected and a number of changes, geared around speeding the forums up, were the focus.
Please let me know if speed increased, decreased, or stayed the same for you. It may be more noticeable, one way or another, in the evening when traffic picks up. Thanks! -- GB |

Was kind of wondering why the site was down for a few minutes...
Different file icons, and it does seem to load a bit quicker. We'll see how it does on one of the pic-heavy posts... Done good so far, GB Semper Fi! Ken Little |

I can already notice an increase.
Is there a way that this site can be setup so our IP can detect our login name and password. It isn't a problem at work since we have a T3, but it does take quite some time to have to login when I'm on dial-up at home. Just a suggestion.... |
Definitely faster. Using Netscape 4.7, I no longer see a pause between opening a page and it rendering. Before, the page would open, the machine would pause for a few seconds, and then the page would render.
Nice fix. Wanna share the technical details? [:)] Just curious what changed. Did you folks update the primary page as well? (I've been disabling JavaScript before loading it, so that my browser wouldn't hang or crash.) |

Seems a good bit faster to me.
Now, about the search function... |
Seems better on my dial-up. My reply to a post earlier was much quicker.
It 'feels' faster - but still seems to take quite a while (but maybe not as long???) to jump from one page within a topic to another, or from one forum to another. I like the new folder icons.

[=)][=)][=)][=)][=)] As for the main site changes, the culprit seems to be the online ad manager which means I am going to have to build yet another custom app to replace it. Meanwhile the new layout and design are moving along and hopefully, HOPEFULLY, we can post a test page in the next few days for everyone to check out and help test. -- GB |

Like the new folders. Don't notice the speed however. Its always been fast loading for me. Have T1 @ work and Cable modem @ home.
I have an ISDN connection, the site is definetly fast enough for my connection atleast.
Noticeably quicker - especially in opening the reply screen.

It is not violating my inalienable rights inscribed in the 2nd Amendment, so I feel that it is adequate.

Seems to be running a bit faster...new icons...certainly didn't hurt anything. Thanks.

Faster than Imbroglio running towards a hot naked woman on a king size waterbed!
A lot better Goatboy! Thanks for all the things that you and Ed Jr. have done to this site. OOOOkkkkkaaayyyy! Ed Sr. too! [:D] |
Not bad, not bad at all! The icons look a bit different though.
As a Macintosh user I'd guess speed has increased 3 to 4 times faster than before the change.
THANKS! |

Pretty darnded zippy for dial up, must have been doing some good coding, GoatBoy. I'm much happier with the speed now.

Loading real fast for me now, Dial-up connection!
Thanks GoatBoy [beer] |

WOW!!! The speed really picked up. Thanks. I love the new icons, too!!
PS. I am on a dial up, so I really noticed it. |
Much faster. On my end I'm plugged into a full T1 and AR15 has always been one of the slowest (understandable) pages around.
Nice coding. Godspeed |
i'm on 56k dialup. Standard page loads seems about the same. But the reply page comes up much faster.

I just switched my ISP a few weeks ago. I have very fast page loading with a 56k dial up modem. I run IE 5.5, and now use ATT for my ISP, and it loads surprisingly quick. Right now it is flying for a dial up on this web site. AOL 6.0, that came free for one year with my computer is a lot slower for some reason. I will not use AOL anymore, I never liked thier service anyway. Thanks for keeping this web site as awesome as it is. I am sure everyone here appreciates your hard work as much as I do. Great Job!!

Much better than it was. At one point last week I finally gave up trying to reply to a thread because it wouldn't load up the page.
I know diddly squat about computers, but I was just curious....... When I hit this reply there were 8,186 threads and 105,185 replies and 106 pages of topics in the general discussion ALONE. All forums included there were almost 14 thousand six hundred topics. (14,600) Like I said I know nothing about computers other than Word, Outlook and Internet explorer. But would a site-wide spring cleaning of say 7 or 8 thousand of the older topics help the speed any? Free up some memory or bandwidth or whatever those topics are taking up? But anyway, good job with the revamp. I like it. M4Guy |

Seems faster, but using a T1 and Cable.
Like the new graphics. |
One of the MANY things I am looking at is a dedicated "Archive" server which would house and maintain (we're talking long storage) of all the older topics and discussions across all boards and forums.
There would be an archive search tool (more in depth than the search used here) and would help reduce even more of the speed for current issues. I think this would help in the long run for maintaining good site speed and possibilities of text collection being distributed on CDs. ]=) Just another one of my side projects... -- GB |

Anti, since the archive would be on a seperate box, where all the traffic would be handled, there would only be an increase in performance here as a significant amount of old data would be moved. (Remember that traffic to the archive would be very small since it would only be for LOOKUP purposes and not posting.)
That means less crap to filter through in the high traffic forums, while maintaining a true fully functional archive for the future! ]=) -- GB |

That explains the errors this afternoon, well worth it. Thought my 'puter croaked. Thanks GB! 56K at home, T1 here at "work"
Much faster for me. ADSL and Netscape 4.77.
Good work guys... DanM |
I don't like this. I used to be able to open another browser window, and browse other sites while waiting for pages to load, but now there's no time!!
Thanks for the work, its great. |
After all this time I have been trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with my PC, now you tell me it was the SITE????
Seriously, it is definately faster. Great job guys!!! [beer] |
i was wondering myself what happened. i like the changes. i like the speed. now if you could only install a filter for smart-aleck responses to serious questions that sometimes trickle in to this particular forum (general discussion), hell, it would be perfect.
keep up the good work fellas. |
Much better but still takes an unacceptably long time. Does the black background need to be reloaded every time a page changes? It that it?
OK, I'll pile on.
It does seem more responsive now. Thanks and keep up the good work. |
Yes, the speed is noticeable, even on my miserable 56K modem setup.

It is much faster now! Kind of like pedal-to-the-metal speed. Checking out this site in my car today even made my car seem to roar even more. [8D]

It was loading quick earlier this evening. Seems to have slowed considerably now.
Definitely faster. BUT also, I turn-off the viewing of images, and selectively open images. I am using IE 5.5 and a dial-up 56K modem. Of course response will differ thru out the day depending on the number of people accessing the board.
