Apocolypse Now, Hamburger Hill, Sniper(not war, but one of my favs), Thin Red Line, Uncommon Valor, Casualties of War, Patton, Longest Day..... What war? Oh yeah, all of those are great on DVD!

" The Eagle has landed " " Cross of Iron " " The Wild Geese " " Apocalypse Now " " Uncommom Valor " These all have good small arms action . " The Green Berets " is good also . Strategy movies include " Tora Tora Tora " and maybe " Midway " You have already mentioned , The Longest day , Platoon , Private Ryan . How about " In Harms Way " (old Duke movie ) |

If you want a really good war movie that is not earthbound and instead intergalactic, "Starship Troopers" is a good movie. I believe the book was actually written way back in the early sixties or late fifties, but the movie was released in 1997. The movie dialog is sometimes humorous, but it is meant to be. The special effects is outstanding and very realistic.

The Patriot (OGM I just agreed with Imbroglio [;)].
Gettysburg 3.5 hours or so but it is first rate, or better. And as a bonus the have old film of a Gettysburg veterans re-union in the early 1900's at the end. And they point out what the main characters did after Geyysburg, in war and civilian life. I can't recomend Gettysburg enough.....I should by a copy. (great as long as you can sit for 3+ hours) |

My favorite future war movie is "Aliens". Some super neat action in that one. The combat drop and deployment of the APC to the planet surface is my all time favorite movie scene.
Lots of future weapon action with the M41A pulse rifle, and robot sentries cutting the bugs to pieces. Recommended Highly. [rail] |

In no particular order: Midnight Clear, Patton, Gardens of Stone, Good Morning Vietnam, Glory, The Patriot (Mel Gibson) and of course nothing beats the clips being expelled from John Canitius' creation in Saving Private Ryan. Sure I missed some, but these are fairly diverse and at least I enjoy them.

Cross of Iron
It has a streak of black humor which Uncle Tom Hanks totally biffed on in Saving Ryan's Privates. At one point two Germans are surveying the refuse-strewn battlefield: "Rolf, what ARE we doing here?!" "We are spreading Spreading the German Culture throughout a Desperate World." There is also a good flick about the 1992 Balkans conflict which I haven't seen. It's called "Beautiful villages, Beautiful flames." "It is said that war brings out the worst and best in men. Now where is the best?" |

Try to find "The Lost Command" with Anthony Quinn. It was the last good war movie I've seen. Quinn plays a ruthlessly ambitious French paratroop officer who fights in French Indochina and Algeria. Lots of MAT-49s. Good movie.

All of the above. Lighthorsemen has some of the best horse action scenes I've seen in a military movie. And, being a former Combat Engineer, "The Longest Day" has one scene very dear to me. Jeffrey Hunter, the engineer SGT, is made an acting LT by Robert Mitchum, and is told to blast through a concrete roadblock and wire. He's a Lt about 5 minutes. Dumps all the demo he has onder the wall, sets his bangalores unsder the wire, back to the firing position. Just hooks up the blasting machine and buys it. His Cpl blows the charge, saves the day.

OK, most of the movies mentioned were good, but Independence Day is one of the WORST movies of all time. In fact, the only "blockbuster" that's worse is Armegeddon. Both of them were shot like a music video.
Anytime you try to take out a 15-mile-wide spaceship with Sidewinders and AMRAAMs, I'm gonna have a problem with your logic. -Troy |

Often overlooked: Gallipoli.
A very YOUNG Mel Gibson (who is BTW NOT the main character) in the movie depicting the Aussie battles against the Turks - more or less the equivalent of their Iwo Jima, I guess. Really drives home the hopelessness of the grunt in combat when lead by stupid people. |
