My kids turn on the TV to find out for a limited time we're getting free movie channels. Dish Network likes to do this from time to time as you may know. So I take the remote and do some surfing to see which channels are included in this promo ad. I stop on one of the porn channels, my wife and I both look at each other, I think to myself "naaaaaa they wouldn't include free porn in their free channel promo", so I decide to click enter. Low and behold I've got free porn!

Now as a responsible parent I purposely subscribed to the smaller package of channels to avoid shows with improper content, and closely monitor what my children watch on television, but should I have to worry that at a moments notice Dish Network will run a pay channel promotion that includes pornography channels!

This is what I emailed Dish Network:

"I’ve noticed that occasionally Dish Network likes to entice customers to upgrade to packages with more channels by offering those channels free for a limited time. While I can understand this advertising tactic one thing I do not appreciate is the fact that you feel you must include pornography channels  in these promotions. I have two children in my household ages 5 and 11. I purposely do not subscribe to larger packages due to the nature and content of some programming nor do I subscribe to channels showing nudity or pornography. I do my part as a parent to monitor the type of programming my children watch. I do not need the added worry that my children will be exposed to pornography without my knowledge each time they turn on our television during one of your pay channel promotions. Please refrain from including these pornography channels in your future promotions. Thank you."

How do you guys feel about this?

how come I never get free porn with my dish network?  I'm going to send them an email complaining that you got free porn & I didn't.

Just lock out the porn channels with the parental lock feature. That way if they're free or not they can't get to them.

Quib, Im with you on this one. Unfortunately though, even on regular TV you have to watch what your kids are viewing. My son and I like to watch COPS together and it gives me a chance to explain to him why drugs, violence is bad, but I have to turn the channel once they start busting prostitutes. (he's 11 and hasn't had "the talk" yet.)
Better hold on, its only going to get worse as the years go by.

Another reason I'm glad I don't have a TV.  I wouldn't want to support this stuff.

Thing is these are channels that we never subscribed to from the beginning, so I never had to worry about them. I can of course block them now, but my point is they were never added to the promotions before. Now they are added with out my prior knowledge, so my 5 year old daughter picks up the remote goes to watch Nickelodeon and gets "Dorm Babes" instead of Rugrats!

I accidently stumbled across the PORN channel as well. As I recall it is just stuck in the middle of the movie channels, maybe not the best of ideas.

BTW Quib, HOW did your parental controls get turned OFF on your box? They are shipped with enabled as the default setting, you have to manually turn them off during setup.

Use your ratings limits or be an idiot. Dish and Directv go to great lengths to design a system to allow parential control, but some idiots still like to complain like the old days.

Be responsible and don't expect your bitching to others transfers your responsibilities. Amen.

Yes indeed...

my faithful Canadian Government has decided that it is ILLEGAL to purchase US DTV signals..

Therefore it has no value...hence nothing to steal!!

However they did try to crack down on stores that did the progamming of the cards for customers..

Afterall....The Priministers Son in law works for the Canadian Satellite company!!

Yep, they have a free weekend of HBO and Cinemax.  Cinemax shows lots of soft-core porn late at night.

Nothing was turned off. I subscribe to the smallest package of programs. Out of X number of programs maybe two of those programs show porn. To view those channels before you had to go through the same procedure like viewing a pay per view movie which involved contacting Dish Network either by phone or through the box, something my kids can not do, there for they can't view those channels. Now, with out my knowing about it,with no warning, this promotion starts where my kids can simply select those channels ,and more, as if I subscribed to those channels.

My only complaint is that if Dish Network wishes to supply these channels free for a limited time there should be some method in place to keep children from viewing those channels by accident. They can offer them for a limited time for free but only after authorization by an adult.

Maybe you should re-read my original post AND my latest post before you call me an idiot or say I'm not resposible.

These are channels that I did not subscribe to. They are not part of my package. I should not have to worry from day to day that Dish Network might add channels that are not suitable for children to my package, with out my prior knowledge. Plain and simple.

I just scrolled through the porn channels and selected each one to view, each popped up a seperate window requiring authorization like normal, not direct access to that channel like before. The free HBO channels are still working.

Hope by my being a concerned parent, I didn't spoil free porn for anyone else! [:D]

Friends been there, done that.  Was pretty cool, especially around football season (no more friggin blackouts!).  Free movies, free porn, free everything...then they graduated and moved, and I'm too lazy to mess with it, and to cheap to pay for it, so I just don't watch TV anymore.

Personally, if they want to show that stuff on their promo channel, they should do it early morning (like 2am).

Quib,

why didn't you have the AdultGuard turned on?  It prevents you from even seeing the channels in case you don't want to even see the titles of the adult movies.  There are other safeguard features on the system as well...

The only "free porn" offered during promo events is Cinemax, not hardcore pornography. Those channels are NEVER given away. NEVER.

If Skinemax is porn to you, god help you when you see real sex. You'll probably cry.

This is true, Cinesex has a penchant for showing, um, training films.  There is a show I used to watch on it while I am surfing the net, and after it was over one of the softporn movies would come on and it wasn't till I heard the moans and grunts that I would look up and wonder what the hell happened to the show I was watching, I didn't tune in to see this.  Didn't bother me, it was just a huge change of venue and sometimes hilarious.

I kinda figured it was skinemax and not actual porn.  Since I get HBO & Cinemax as part of my package, that's why I didn't get the free porn.
