Is a ar worth the trouble?  Are they as hard to keep clean as I have herd?  I have never had any problems with any of my AK's.  What would you reccomend as a good starter ar?

i know i know DTT. but i have both an AK and an AR. i shoot the both regularly and they both kick ass. i cant give you a real accuracey figure because i dont go to a "real" range but i can hit soda cans at 100 paces, about 150ft, with both all day long. i havent really shot at a distance any greater becouse i havent found a god place to do it. you know the myth about ARs jamming every other round? welp i put 550 rnds through mine wihtout cleaning it and had no problimes. and i just told you about the AKs accuracey. so as far as im concerned they both rock. just my $.02. thanks

Ahh yes, get both. If you are looking for a good starter. YOu might want to take a look at the Ltd Edition Group Buy thread.

Here are my two babies.

1. Inaccurate weapons are very frustrating.
2. AK's are about as ergonomic as a fence post.
3. AR sights (especially the A2) are excellent.
4. 5.56/.223 is a flat shooting, accurate round in itself.
5. If your AR shoots poorly, the problem can usually be solved.  If your AK shoots poorly, it's an AK.
IMHO, the AK is a clunky, awkward weapon, and in the most common 7.62X39, underpowered at anything over 200 yards.  The only two things the AK has going for it are its political status and its reliability.  It's like comparing a Russian T55 tank toa Corvette.

I like both the AR's AND the AK's
both have advantages and disadvantages
accuracy is better with the AR
ammo is cheaper for the AK
AR's are usually better made
AK's are cheaper to purchase
AR's have less recoil
AK's aren't too finicky with ammo brands
etc, etc, etc,...

Just buy them both and be happy...I did

i am gettin' older now and found that i have arthritis in both my shoulders and elswhere, the ar-15 is the rifle i most enjoy to shoot. comfortable, accurate, and no pain. a real cadillac. surprisingly, i also can shoot the fnfal without a problem. the ak bothers me to shoot because i tend to tuck in close to the sights and the takedown spur whacks my face and glasses. short stock i guess? i love both the AR-15, AK-47, and all of their variants. i own both, but the reality is that they both "suck"!!!  both have their issues, both have their plusses. argueing over which is better is like a pissing contest. they are only tools. they are only rungs in the latter to a better design that has'nt been manufactured yet.

wishing for more lib

ak are not that inaccurate. depends on barrel quality, change of sites, and the shooter [:D]

Ak-47 = Poor mans M-16.

Get yourself an AR-15. If you have to ask why, stick with the AK.

The FNC is the most comfortable but the AR is my Favorite.  The AK is just to own it.  It shoots ok I guess.  But I love my AR.  My AR has never, failed me.  Get a Bushmaster.

daddy is correct.  The AR15 does have some deficiencies.  If you are inclined to buy another weapon to fill those deficiencies the AK sure the hell isn't the answer.  However, an M1A (or other high quality .308) is.  And don't give me this crap about price.  As another poster stated, "you get what you pay for."

I've owned several AK and AK variants in times past.  All were fiarly decent.  My Valmet 76? was excellent back in 1980.  Had a tubular T stock.  I had to use Egyptian ammo though that often cracked cases when firing.  Still was very accurate.  Commie ammo was not to be found then.

Then came the Galils.  I put up the money way before they became available.  Got one of the first in .308 to come into the US.  Awesome rifle.  Later bought one in .556 and another in .308.  Those FN folding stocks and the charging handle improvements on the bolt and the tritium night sights...  Shot well too.

But still, to this date, I don't think anything is as ergonomic as an AR.  And mine have proven to be just as dependable as an AK.  So there.

Since we can't have full autos it boils down to
accuracy and that means the ar.

For my purposes a 1000AKs couldn't ever compare favorably to just one of my ARs.   I have no use for an AK type rifle, I figured that out after owning my SKS for a couple years.  The SKS makes it out maybe once or twice a year and I don't see where an AK clone would see much more use.   The ARs are my primary use rifles and for me they do everything better than an AK ever could.

IVE SPENT 13 YEARS IN THE INFANTRY AND LOVE THE AR. AS FAR AS CLEANING IT, IVE ACTUALLY FOUND THAT A LITTLE CARBON LEFT ON THE BOLT AND CHAMBER HELPS KEEP IT FROM JAMMING. I HOPE NOBODY FLAMES ME FOR SAYING THAT, JUST EXPERIENCE TALKING.

If you usa AK quality mag in an AR it will jam.
If you use AR Quality Mag in an AR it will function perfectly.

I own both, but my ar is definitely my favorite.  The AR is reliable and accurate.  That is the key, all I am doing with my ak is just blasting.  That gets awfully boring after while!  The ar is not only an "assault rifle" but is also a marksman's tool.  Hell of a better buy than my ak.
