I recently posted that I was going to do a WWI and WWII firearms presentation for History students in the Highschool that I teach at.

Well, today was the presentation.  I talked to 8 different classes, 2 per hour, today.  I showed them 15 different rifles, from that period.  I had such a good time.   Any day I can spend talking and handling firearms with a bunch of people asking me questions about them is a good day indeed!  Students had lots of questions, and most seemed pretty interested.  Kids were skipping all day trying to come down and see the presentation from other classes that had heard about it.

I can't wait till next year, WWI to Current day?  Many, including the History teacher said they would have liked to see an example of the AR-15 class.   I think I can talk my Principle into that next year.

OMG! And no students were murdered? What happened to zero tolerance?

I think there was a little of that this morning, when they saw the Art Teacher(me) hauling in armloads of rifles, I think they thought I had gone off the deep end!

guns762,

That is like a breath of fresh air.  Music to my ears.  If this info gets out very far, I wouldn't be surprised if you AND the principal suffer a few repercussions.

What ever happened to the day when a few buddies would take their bird guns to school in the morning and leave em in their locker so they could go directly to the dove fields after school?

BTW, I sent my step son to school today in a Colt T Shirt. Front and Back. He came home last week wearing a Slip Knot shirt and I made a deal with him.  Hope he doesn't get in any hot water over it. Really can't tell what to expect these days.  Know what I mean?

Under "zero tolerance" as being pushed by the current administration, your guns would have been confiscated and you would now be sitting in jail facing federal charges. It is all about "project exile" and "strict enforcement of existing laws".

Could be.  But, I do live in Wyoming.  And, although it is a collage town, even the liberals don't have much stomach for gun control.
The Principle is a Royal Bitch, and I say this in the nicest way.   Not too many people want to tangle with her any more.  She would stand by me to the stake, or tied up with her.

BTW, "Enemy at the Gates", was just here and everyone was really interested in the Monsin-Nagants I brought with me.

762 you are awesome! You did what needs to be done in most places. EDUCATE people that guns like it or not play an important role in all facets of life. The guns you displayed were just tools to their masters ends. Some defended liberty and others brought tyranny to those that faced their muzzles. You also exposed at least one person with no prior experience with guns to them in a positive manner. Keep up the good fight brother!

Imbroglio has agood point. I thought it was a felony to posses a gun on school property? Does it matter if you have the school principles permission? I doubt it. Hopefully you won't get any negative reprecussions from you exhibition. Good effort put forward on your part BTW.

You are probably correct that it doesn't make any difference if I have the priciples permission.  I was thinking that next year, I would have the LEO of our School, "bring" them in and supervise the presentation.  I know this probably now belongs in "Legal", but what do ya think?

It would fall under the jurisdiction of the feds.

You would have to ask the ATF for an exemption, but then again everyone knows how they operate. They tell you something is ok one day, then kick your door in with a defective warrant in hand the next.

AFAIK, you were OK under the law to bring your weapons to school. If I recall correctly, the exemptions are for LEO, security guards with permission from the school board to have a weapon on campus, or for school sanctioned activities such as shooting club and also for your history class if you have permission from the school.

Can you verify this with a quote from somewhere?  Like the ATF's regulations, would be great.  If you can, I would really appreciate it.
BTW, one of the fathers of one of my students is a school board member, he said he was really impressed with the idea.  So far, no one has come to take me away, yet.

Hey teach, I hope they understand the underlying reasons and outcomes of the war and it's aftermath as much as they now understand the instruments of it. By your spelling ablilities, I'd be worried about that.

Are you preparing them for COLLEGE (correct spelling)as much as you are for passing a marshall arms exam??

I'm sorry for my gramatical and spelling errors, I'm not an English teacher or a History Teacher.  I'm just a stupid art teacher with a love for history.  I trust that the History teacher, who is very good, will deal with the political implicatitions of the wars and their outcomes.  This was designed for the students to see more than just, "All quiet on the western front", and a few black and white photos in a old book.  If it gets kids interested in History how can you argue with that? You sir, sound like a troll to me.

Far be it from me to accuse the pot of calling the kettle black Bohica, but I believe the word you were looking for is martial as in military, as opposed to marshall as in Marshall Dillon.

I was a bit bothered, however, by the use of the word "seamed" (i.e., having a seam) as opposed to "seemed" (past tense of "to seem").

But then 762 explained later that he was the ART teacher, and it all made sense.

I'm really bothered by the fact that the bell-curve of literacy seems to be sliding in the wrong direction, but I blame that on the really lousy public school instruction based primarily on how the students feel rather than on whether or not they can think.  Poor grammar and spelling skills are the fault of the educational system and the parents rather than the kids.

Having thus vented: 762, you are [red]THE MAN[/red]  The kids know what's cool, and they know when you're enthusiastic about what you're teaching.  More power to you.  Keep it up.

But don't expect a knock on the door from the Feds.  I believe the Supreme Court struck down the Federal "Gun Free Zone" law on the basis of it not having anything to do with interstate commerce.  Wyoming might still have a similar law, but you seem to be quite sensible there, still, so I doubt it.

Bohica,
So, tell me why you are so upset with my little presentation.  If I interested just one kid in the history of WWI or WWII, more than they were, did I not succeed?  If only one more student who believed guns were "bad", now sees them in a different light, did I not succeed?

I personally belive that if you understand the history of the gun, you can better understand history in general.  I can tell you that I have seen this happen already in several students.  Students interested in firearms have started asking more questions IN ART about the political situations of WWI.  Not because they have to, because they are curious.

BTW, I never have been able to spell that well.  Used a "Spelling Ace" all through college.
edited because I can't type either....I know, I should proof read before right? You guys are tough.

guns I wish their were more teachers like you when i was in hs.

Just a thought, for the WW1 to present lecture perhapse you could pursuade a few national gaurdsmen and police special response persons to bring in some more exotic weaponry. ie,MP5"s M16's M14"s or even an M60 or M2 browning 50 cal
hell somthing like that might actualy get some positive print in the local press

YOU THE MAN i always knew art teachers were cool for some reason ;)

My highschool is the crappiest one on earth!  They suspended a kid for pointing his finger out like a pistol and saying O.K.!  Everytime a teacher hears the word gun in the hallway you get sent to the office and questioned.  There are police roaming the halls every day, but the wierd thing is I don't live in an inner city school where there are police in a lot of the schools I live in a suburb.  The police always give me shit in the halls to like taking me to the office and shaking me down for guns or drugs.  I can't stand it!  [pissed]

No problem.  I understand your point, and it bothers me too.  Art teacher or not, 762, it is difficult to get the kids to understand that precision is important in speaking and writing when their instructors are shining examples of how not to do it.  Another case in point:
Not because they have to, because they are curios.
View Quote

No, they are not curios (those are what you can buy with a curio and relic license), but curious.  Yes, that mistake can be a simple typographical error, but somehow given your earlier use of "seamed", I doubt it.

If even the teachers are not meticulous about proper grammar and spelling, why the hell should the students be?  And thus, we have graduates of 12-year primary schools barely able to read and write.

However anything you can do to get them interested in history is greatly appreciated.

I had great hope that the Internet would be a driving factor in improving the literacy and writing abilities of the public.  It seems I was overly hopeful.

(Edited because my particular problem is punctuation.)

KBaker,
Your point is well taken.  I have always been sensetive to my punctuation, spelling, and writing, because I have always had trouble.  The sad part is, I actually change my wording when writing, just so I don't have to spell a word that I am unsure of.  Case in point, this post.  I have yet to learn how to use a spell check when posting on the internet.

I know this in not a good excuse, but do understand that I am one of the most hard headed, perfectionists, there is.  Just ask any of my students.  I strive for perfection in almost every thing I do; but, succeeding and trying are two different things.  I stress to my students that their art work can always use improvements, no matter how good they are, or how good their art work is.  I am proud of the work my students do, as well as the program that I have built.  I am always trying to be a better teacher and this is a lesson I will not soon forget.

For some reason, this matters to me that you know this.

I'm not saying that you've done anything wrong here, but my real point was that it will be far less important for your students to understand the differences between an M1 Garand and a Kar 98, as it would for them to understand the far bigger picture. I'm glad you take interest in your students and their learning process because that's important too, but I guess the scope seems too narrow and politically motivated. Let the parents teach them about the different firearms in the world, and you prepare them for higher learning. That was my angle.

dude.  Wear a Don't tread on my patch on your backpack.  also print out tiny copies of the ill of rights and hand them out to all the police/teachers/friends.  Then, if you are at least 16, just go around talking about militia (not militant, there is a difference) firearms, and those bastard socialist that have invaded the school district.  If you get sent to the office, demand your parent and your lawyer present before a search is commenced and then shut your mouth until they arrive.  Never answer any questions and carry around books and magazines gun related.  What are they gonna do?  as long as you never never discuss violent acts, revenge and columbine, they got nothin on your bro.

I have no problem with that.  On an individual basis, I really don't have a problem with people who don't have a good command of the language.  However, I believe you're far from alone in the teacher ranks, and that does bother me.

Just a suggestion - especially if you're a perfectionist - bookmark a good dictionary/thesarus (I like http://www.merriam-webster.com)  If there's a word you're not sure of, look it up.  It only takes a second, and if you misspell it, the site will recommend words that are close.  You'll be surprised how quickly your vocabulary (and your spelling) improves.  Spell checkers are great, but they don't check for context.  "Curios" was spelled correctly, it's just the wrong word where you used it.

Now, since this is a firearms board, not a language and grammar board, I won't carry this thread any further.  However, it was important for you to tell me, so I thought it at least my responsibility to respond.
