One girl at work came to America at the age of 22 from England.  Today we were working right next to each other and we started talking.  The conversation quickly became political and we came to the topic of self defense in england.  When I said if someone is robbing you and might kill you and/or your family you should be able to kill them, but she said "you don't have the right to end someones life". WTF? I swear if I ever become a criminal I will move to england, they always help the criminal instead of punishing them

Edited to be clear on what I was trying to say

I'm reading lonely planet Ireland right now.  Can't wait to go.  I already know how to order beer (stout) and whiskey (Paddy's, Jameson's Bushmills)

Anyone ever been to Ireland?  I want to start in the North and work my way south.

Nope.  I just got back from Coventry and Northhampton and London.  All of the guys I met didn't have this mentality and are pretty outraged at the farmer incident.  Just about everyone I was working with over there were, surprisingly to me, pretty conservative.  I showed them pics of my guns and a video of a shoot this summer.  They were mesmerized.  They just couldn't believe that I had that much firepower and especially couldn't believe that I carry a pistol everyday with my ccw.  Shotguns are pretty common over there.  You need a license for every firearm you own.  Rifles are a bit more rare and must be kept at your shooting club.  Pistols are flat unheard of legally.

I really like England and can't wait to go back.  Next time I want to get to Ireland and Scottland.  Even this time of year the country is green even though the leaves have fallen off of the trees.  Hedges and grasses everywhere.  Pretty much overcast all the time though.

Yeah they all don't like it and think our guns are real cool but they keep voting the same people in.

Or at least they are now, and once again we ahve somebody wanting to ban Knives, BB guns, realistic water pistols, swords, bows, etc.

I'm getting my toys now before they do become illegal. We don't do "grandfathering" over here, if it becomes illegal, you hand it in without compensation.

Needless to say I will of course comply 100% when the time comes.

Dammit, nobody ever remembers Wales

We're nice too, it's not just the sheep, honest!

Back on subject though, you have the right to self-defence, you just can't escalate up the force spectrum, and it's becoming more and more rare that you can actually "get away with it".

Tony Martin (farmer) is not a good example, as he frankly seemed a little bit on the unbalanced side from what I saw.

Recently we had an 80-year old woman force two teenage hoodlums out of her house at sword-point. She got commended by the local police chief.

Course If I tried that I wouldn't be able to post here anymore...

I have been to Dingle (as in dingleberry) and loved it. It is on the southwest coast. Amazing hiking there. The pubs kick ass too, great music and hot little Irish tarts. Scotland also is amazing. Did a 2 week tour over there last spring with great hiking and pubs as well.

I also say screw the English, which I did, and she was one of the best lays I have ever had!!!!! [naughty]

Nothing like making out with a hot English chick on an Aussie beach in the spring...ah to be young with no commitments again...

You hace to remember one small detail. The English are SUBJECTS not citizens as we are.

The English Government has conditioned their SUBJECTS to believe in such crap.

I ,for one ,prefer to think for MYSELF and have personal freedoms that the English have lost over the last 100 years. Why do think the "Empire " folded up. Now they are just another second hand nation of semi spineless SUBJECTS OF THE CROWN.

We kicked the bastards outa here 200 years ago FOR A REASON. There are still folks there who have common sence but cannot change the system . Guess the English will sink even futher . Then we'll have to go & rescue them AGAIN.

More info for Satcong, sorry for the hijack!!!

I just thought of something. You have to get together with Con Moriarty if you go to Ireland and can afford one of his tours. He is very interesting and knowledgeable about Irish history. We also went rock climbing one day (he has done K2 and many other world-renowned peaks, several after breaking his back).

His Scottish counterpart is Stuart Nicol, who is also amazing. He can narrate Scotland's history starting 4,000 years ago! He is also an accomplished climber and world traveler. He will take you up Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak, if you think you can make it [;D]

We have gotten to be good friends with Con and are actually pictured in the brochure. We are the only people on the Scotland page, but the pic. was actually taken in Ireland. Go figure.

The trips ain't cheap but well worth the money. Stuart also has a hostel, Farr Cottage, where you can stay, get laid and get some of his knowledge without a private tour.

Are you guys kidding??? Basically the British isles Suck!!! their food sucks! even their 'american'food does, I bought a burger king over there and nearly puked. They are totally faschist! In  Ireland it's illegal to get a freakin divorce!! even Saudi arabia allows that! as well as the following, no good porn, Prostitution is illegal, no abortion(ireland), no FIREARMS, Spy Cameras everywhere. I literally went into culture shock! Take a lesson from the 82nd airborne in WWII, what they said about Holland(der nederland) "Whoa! the food is good, The people speak english, And the girls are all hot blondes! Ya know what ? screw France!" Yes it's true! holland, Denmark, Finland(big on class III), Swizerland all the "germanic" countries are much cooler to visit than the uptight Britons.

t-stox, I have to doubt that you've ever been to any of these places.

Ireland is great!  I spent a couple weeks there and near the end I was looking for a small farm to buy out in the country.  The roads are crap, though.  Irish babes are hot!

As far as England goes, I've only spent time in London, and it wasn't enough (only a few days).  They make great soups, but the rest of the food can sometimes be subpar.

Although I would not have used the words he did, I think he summed it up pretty well.
I formed that opinion after 3 years of living there and traveling ALL over the UK. While I think for the most part it sucks, it in no way deterred me from having a VERY good time while I was there.

oi vay! I don't speak about what I  don't know about! Yes I've been to the following countries Ireland,UK,France,Holland,Belgium,Germany, Swizerland, Denmark ,Chezh and Russia. And I must say that sure you can have a good time in England as I'm sure you can in Iran or China if you went as a tourist, But I would'nt want to live there. To me it's a question of how much fun can a horny, single, Slightly well to do, Likes to eat and Schmoke some Stuff, guy have living in said country? You did'nt address my question about "freer" european countries. I'd rather live in a country where you can get a divorce, Get a hooker, and smoke some weeds than live in ireland where your wife is chained to you, all the girls "expect" something from you (like money) and they lock you up for toking. You say I've never been to the British isles but have you ever been to the continent? something tells me if you did you would'nt want to come back.

I haven't been everywhere in Europe, just Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstien.

Edited to add:

I can't wait to go back.  Europe is a vacation paradise.  I found some great spots in Switzerland I wouldn't mind living, the same for Austria.

Croatia has some really nice spots too, and most of the people there don't hate Americans.

It seems the only place you'd be happy is in Denmark - all the weed, blow and hookers you can afford, right there in the central square.

Then again, I've also been to Canada, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Fiji, Tonga and the Peoples Democratic Republic of Kalifornia.

All are interesting to visit, all have good and bad points.

Can't get a divorce in Ireland? So what? Get married in the US, get divorced in the US or Mexico.  Hookers, booze and weed are available anywhere in the world, just not legally in most places.

Most countries won't let you have a gun, which sucks, but that's not a good enough reason to boycott the place forever.  In South America you just need to buy your local sherrif and you'll have no problems with criminals.

I think you need to expand your criteria of what makes a country good or bad.  Focusing on a couple narrow points really skews the results.

Is it "Ba woh lum bior" & Ba woh lum ishke beatha"?

I know it isn't spelled right, whoever decided how Gaelic should be spelled was drinking too damned much.

There's a big disconnect between what most of the people think and what most of the politicians do. Elite opinion is strongly against the death penalty and self-defense in the UK, but the general public's feelings are pretty close to those of the US public.

tax_monster, where were you in Croatia? I was in Zagreb for a few days last summer. The core of the city is pretty nice. Very much Austro-Hungarian, beaux-arts, and a ton of cafes downtown. It's sort of run down, but there was a lot of reconstruction going on.

Wanted to get over to the Dalmatian coast, didn't get a chance.

I haven't been to Croatia yet, probably this coming October.  My parents really like it, I think the city they liked most was Opatjia (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong) - they've gone every year for the past few years.
