Why do i automatically assume that 1) all or most LEO's are horrible shots 2) anyone from NYC MUST be a horrible shot must be a Texas thing (actually the leo's I've seen down here cant shoot for crap either) |

I've been to third world counties where seeing machineguns carrying police isn't out of place and every one of those countrys don't enjoy the freedom that we do. I dream of a day when America is free once again and seeing ANYONE with a automatic weapon isn't out of place. AND SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE SKI MASK ARE FOR? Reminds me of the KKK hiding behind their hoods. |

1. Nobody else, including the other cops, is wearing a ski mask. That suggests that he is either a) very sensitive to cold, b) somebody from a narcotics or similar unit who works undercover & was dragooned into uniform service for New Year's, but whose anonymity is important to his safety & effectiveness the rest of the time, or c) an asshole. Could be any one of the three. Probably "b" if I had to bet money on it.
2. It is creepy to see men with military-style weapons and fritz helmets standing around on the streets in uniform. Whether you think doing it is a good idea or not, it is an unsettling image. 3. In Israel, the cops (and yes, they are cruising around with automatic rifles, scoped rifles, SMGs, et c., and driving jeeps & HMMVWs) are very low-key and one hardly notices them, mostly because off-duty soldiers carry their weapons all the time, which means that there are more 19 year-olds carrying M16s and Uzis than there are policemen, period, almost everywhere you go. Also, civilian concealed carry seems to be very common (or else I was being tracked by Mossad agents of all ages, colors, shapes, and sizes, which ain't likely). 4. I have no criticism of the officers in the photos. I am just wondering who decided that [presumably] automatic rifles are a good choice for Times Square on New Year's Eve. If you - policeman or not- lit off an automatic rifle at [b]anybody[/b] in that crowd for any reason, you would either go to jail or go down in history as the greatest rifleman since Alvin York. |

What happened to all the Mini-14s they had? When did they ditch them for the M4s?
Re: Civil War. The problem was all the compromises had finally reached a breaking point. It started with the 3/5ths compromise and pretty much ended when the Maine/Missouri compromise was ruled unConstitutional. Was it about state's rights? Yes. But the most debated issue was whether or not a state would be a slave state or not. From the beginning the South was afraid the North would outlaw slavery, thus the 3/5ths compromise, and the South's economic base would be diminished. Slavery would have begun to die in the 1880s and 1890s as industrialization took hold. The ironic part is the North was largely responsible for those inventions that would have made slavery irrelevant. The fact is slavery should have never been allowed to exist in a country that touted freedom. The Civil War was our pennance for that evil. Yes the pendulum of power swung too far to the Federal government, but that was more a device of the income tax than the Civil War, IMO (the power to tax being the power to destroy and all). |

I too am usettled by those images. I hoped to never see something like that in this country in my lifetime. It indicates to me that the terrorists won.
