I was at the local package store last nite (New Years Eve) and I noticed there was a member of the Army in the store all decied out in dress unis' down to the clorofram shoes. He had a wedding ring on and I presume he was over 21 so he wasnt out of boot but he had a few ribbons, not being a past Army guy I didnt know what they were. Now here in my area there is no base so he was obviusly home on leave and showing his pride I think in his service to country. Anyway he  had a case of beer and a case of Mikes hard Lemonade. Having been in the AF for a short time I know these guys dont make shit. Since I was in line behind him I asked him if he had just got back and he said he had just got out of some training and was going for more and didnt know where they were going to send him. When he got to the register I told the clerck I was buying for the Army. You would have thought I announced a robery!! Everyone went quiet and there were at least a half dozen people inline. The Army guy was dumbfounded, he started to tell me that that I didnt have to do that but I told him it was my privelage and not to worry about it. Just stay safe and be carefull and some of us are very gratefull for the job that he and the rest of the military is doing for us. The clerk ran my card and while I was waiting the guy started to ask me questions and I figured he didnt need my name, just go enjoy and I shoed him away and out the door to have a good time BUT DONT END UP IN JAIL HA!!
Anyway I felt better and some of the patrons were looking at me like I was nuts. Fuck 'em. Wish I could buy every service man and woman a drink. Happy new year.

Funny you should mention this, my brother who lives in IN was going to a costume party wearing an Army get up. Said some guy actually bought his booze for him...wondering if that was you. [BD]

Dr. check your IM and I will go on record here if your not joking regardless who the person was if your brother did that and let someone buy him something under those circumstances I guess that says a hell of lot about the kind of man he is.

Hey tnek, thanks for your deed. I wish I'd have a chance to do something like that (in person) for one of our fine service people.

I usualy like a good joke but there are some things that are in pretty poor taste. Anything to do with our men and women in service falls in that catagory to me.

He will remember that for the rest of his life, I had something like that happen once, and I did.

It does make one feel good - something one should do when we aren't at war also.

I ran the two miles between the Greyhound bus stop and the US Cavalry Store in Radcliff, KY to buy my beret after completing basic training at Fort Knox. There was a mother in the store shopping for her son who I assume was graduating soon also, and she asked me if I was a solider. I said that I was. She thanked me for being a solider, and for going through what I had just done.

I'll never forget that.

I went to a local resturaunt a few eeks ago in my Dress Blues.  We had just had some family portraits done so that's why I was in uniform.  So the place was packed and they said 45 minute wait.  We go up to the bar and some couple buys me a drink and immediatly the mangager came over and asked for the mittle blinking thing and went up front and told the girl to seat us immediatly.  I was reaaly happy but told him he didn't have to do that, he smiled said something about a buddy being overseas.  

You did a good deed.

I had a old couple, in the Atalnta Ga Airport one time on a lay-over going home on leave. They bought me dinner. Something I will never forget.

When I was working in Tampa Int'l Airport last year as part of Operation Safe Skies, I was in line at Starbucks during my break for an ice tea.  As soon as I ordered it, a guy in line behind me literally jumped in front of me and slapped down a $5 before I could lay down any money.

I surely did appreciate it, and told him so.

Anyone have the link to the thread from a month or so ago, about all the soldiers in the airport going home for leave, and how so many people gave up their seats for the soldiers?  That story just about had me in tears.

tnek outstanding job. You probably just made an impact on that soldier for the rest of his life.

I am lucky to live in a area with alot of military and know exactly how you felt. It's a small thing but a good thing.

I have a soft spot for old folks and military too.  I was at the casino and this old couple grabbed some food and were going to pay for it. I was in front and payed for the food.  They were quite shocked.  People dont expect things like that anymore.

I was traveling home to Harrisburg when my flight got rerouted to Pittsburg.

I was talking with a Major from 1st Signal Brigade that was coming home for the holidays after a 6 month stay in Korea.

Knowing the flights weren't going any where, we both felt it prudent to rent a car and drive the 4 hrs home in the snow storm.

I insisted on paying for the rental and all the expenses.  I told him it was the least I could for his service to our country
