In terms of value, the SAR-2.

Where the heck can you buy an SAR-2 nowadays? I love my SAR-1, but have been unable to find any SAR-2's recently.

There are always a couple on Gun Broker... type in "AK" and you'll find a couple for about $350 to 400 ish.  Atlantic Firearms has got some Bulgarian stuff in the 450-600 range, and K-Var has got parts kits which can be built on Ohio Ordnance recievers.... but those turn out to be more expensive- 250-300 for parts, 400 for gunsmith (unless you do it yourself), and 60 for reciever (+ffl).

This is who I bought mine from a couple weeks ago. $290 + $23 shipping. UPS says it is on its way and should be here by next week. Got my ammo today and am patiently awaiting its arrival.[:D]

SAR-2 is a great deal, Ohio Rapid Fire makes a fine AK-74.

Seriously consider the "Special Edition AK" located in the AK section of this board

bwahahahahha...
the great thing is, if you stumble across the shotgun news from over a year ago, and read fortiers article, youd think an SAI build was the best!!
Fortier ever mention SAI ever again?

SAR-2 here.  With a little TLC and a decent refinish from a local gunsmith they clean up very well.  You can do the wood yourself while waiting for the refinish.

He (Fortier)did in fact mention it agian Oct 20 SGN quote from DF....

"One of the good things about the recent influx of high quality Kalashinikov parts kits is the cottage industry that has sproutted up assembling them. Unfortunately, while there are a number of excellent 'smiths out there, care should be taken where you send a project to. I, and several hundred others recently found this out the hard way. Today in our fast paced internet driven world it's easy for an unknown to quickly gain a name for himself througha web board or web site. Unfortunately some of these individuals are unable to handle building more than a very small quantity of rifles at at time and quickly fall behind. Others ask for money up front and then dissappear into a maze of unanswered email and telephone calls. So just be aware that if you find yourself on the Yellow Brick Road headed to Oz and everything sounds too good, it just might be. I suggest sticking with with reputable builders who are known for building quality rifles and delivering in a timely manner."

Draw your own conclusions.

I'm sure VEPR's are nice rifles, they're just really expensive and don't really look like an AKM or AK-74. Not that it means a whole lot, I just prefer weapons to look as wicked and military spec as possible.
