My wife and I went to Canyon de Chelly then to Utah for Christmas.
That morning this was what we got to see. Much better than having to put up with the screaming brats from other family members that you may or may not like as it is. Edited to add this link to the rest of the photos. xzodus.com/utah/index.htm I will add the larger photos there.   This is called Spider Rock.   The next day we took a short cut to Monument Valley. Hwy 59 to Hwy 163.  Rock formation on Hwy 163.  The Mittens at Monument Valley. The second most photographed image there. This is the view you will see as you actually enter the park.  Leaving Monument Valley on Hwy 163. Look back in your rearview mirror and this is what you see. The most photographed view you see in so many movies and postcards.  This is Mexican Hat Rock. Because it looks like a Mexican with a hat on.  Mexican Hat is located on Hwy 163, 24 miles west of Bluff. More coming up... |

The next day we went to the Arches National Park in Moab. This rock formation is called the three sisters. One of the first things you will see as you enter. The next day we went to an area called Castle Valley and Fisher Towers. This is one of the 4WD trails that we went on in the area. The hill is much higher than it looks. The next day we went to the Needles District of the Canyonlands. This is called Newspaper Rock. [img]http://xzodus.com/utah/needles_elephant_hill_road.jpg[/img] Here is the dirt road into Elephant Hill. This was the area I wanted to spend most of my time at, but the heavy snow storm in the beginning of the trip had all the 4WD roads closed. So instead of driving to a 1 mile trail head, we walked a six mile trail to the area of Elephant Hill trail to Chelser Park. It was a bitch. It took us all day just to do this trail. But all the parks main attraction areas are easily accessible paved roads and hiking trails. Miles of hiking trails. Looks like you had a great time legs.
You were only about 3 hrs. west of me when you were in Moab. Did you check out the museum in Blanding? Edge of the Cedars or something like that. Really a neat museum. My friends nephew lives there and I've only been down there one time. I do plan on returning sometime. Plus visiting Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde and all. |

GREAT photos! I've been to a lot of those places myself...we drove up the dirt road to Mexican Hat a couple years ago to take some photos, and went through Monument Valley and to Arches. Just beautiful, beautiful country.

I LOVE Moab and the surrounding area... The western deserts of utah are very interesting and have their own senic qualites. I'm a desert rat at heart, and spend a lot of time out there. One of my favorite trips was a New Years trip to Moab with some of my friends a few years back... Beer in a motel room, then a day playing on Poison Spider Mesa jeep trail and Dump Bump in my Toyota PU.
I think its hard to shoot a roll of film down there and end up with more than 5 "bad" pictures. Ohh, and floating the San Jaun River through those Goosenecks... I rowed my uncles rubber raft down there. I still have a pair of Teva sandals that I cant get all the red dirt outta the straps and a white T-shirt thats really pink now. The sand and dirt down there gets in everything. I'd love to take another trip south. I'm planning on running down that way sometime in February, around my birthday. Thanks for posting the pics man... |
