Shedding an interesting light on the airport search thread, a news report this morning said that entry to Times Square (which is, if memory serves, an intersection of public streets) during the New Year's festivities will be possible only through checkpoints equipped with metal detectors.

Be polite. Cooperate. Don't make waves. Be a sport and submit to a search as the cost of standing on a public street.

So all you have to do is enter a building before the checkpoint and exit it on the opposite side, after the checkpoint, bypassing it all together.
