Every so often I get bug up my keester that I "need" a Sni...oh...OKAY OKAY DAMNIT...."Precision Rifle."  If I ever do it, I more than likely would get a Remington 700PSS.  Yes, I've fiddled with the Savage 110FP or whatever they call it...and just based on the action of the bolt, trigger, and stock...its RemingtonRemingtonRemington for me.

I'm willing to guess that most 700PSS sold to the public are in .308 win.  That's fine.  Great round.  Fine for whatever most will do.

Then there are those who wanna go one more step and get it in .300 WinMag.  Want more.  Get more.  Bang.  I hear quite a bit about people going this route.

Then there is the .300 Remington Ultra Mag.  I never hear about people going this route.  Seems to me, if you want more than the .308, go with more...much more.  In the words of Nigel Tufnel...go to 11.

I dont reload...but if I ever bought a 700PSS in .300 ultra-mag...I'd have to learn.

So...what gives.  Why not .300 Remington Ultra-Mag?

Usually they go from .308 to 300 WM to .338LM then to a .50.  The 300 WSM is gaining some ground in the short action crowd.

Looking at my reloading manual, with 180 grain bullets and 24" barrels the 300 Win Mag can do 3160 fps.  The 300 RUM can do 3220 fps.  That is pretty close to being identical.  Adding the extra expense, recoil and action length into the equation, and what we have is another dud marketing ploy from Remington.

I suspected something was a little fishy when Remington first introduced this cartridge.  It had a chart comparing the 300 Win, 300 Wby and 300 RUM.  In the small print, the RUM had a 26" barrel, while the other two had 24" barrels.  The Wby load in the comparison was an underpowered Remington offering, as opposed to Weatherby's full powered round.  The RUM was using streamlined Nolser Partition bullets while other two only had the old pudgy Core Lokts.  Basically, Remington was comparing apples to oranges.

I don't know my Hornady 5th Edition gives the 300 Rem Mag a 300fps advantage over the 300 Win Mag 3200fps vs 2900fps with the 190gr, but it is a 26" barrel vs 25" barrel.

The Accurate powder manual #2 says 3119 vs 2808 with a Speer 200gr SP both with a 24" barrel  20more grs of ppwder are used though.
3304 vs 2992 with the speer 180grsl

From those two examples it has more bang than the 300winmag.

Is it enough more bang though????
