I read this over on IMDb.com:

"In the opening scene, French troops are shown with their beret insignia on the left side of their forehead. In reality, and contrary to most countries in the world, French soldiers have their insignia on the right side of their forehead."

Why are the French so damned contrary?

I thought it was actually on the back of their head, so the enemy can see it as the Frenchies are running away.

As soon as I saw the insignia blooper I quickly became disgruntled and turned the movie off.  I simply can't stand false representation in theater.  It cheats reality.

Now where did I put my Rambo collection

There was a series of posts lately about a book (I cannot remember the title, it had 'Devils' in it) that chronicled a large number of Waffen SS transferring to the FFL at the end of WWII and being used specifically for colonial policies, mainly in Indochina.

Could this reversed emblem be a carry-over from their Waffen SS days?

So we invade France and make them change their insignia....sounds like a good enough reason...

You mean other than the fact that whole movie looks like we were fighting the NVA in Tennessee?

I remember the French soldiers wearing the kepi blanc of the Legion in the beginning of that movie.

the scene with the French getting ambushed was
supposed to be in the early 1950's did the Viet
Minh use SKS rifles in the early 50's? most early photos never show any SKS rifles in use by the Viet Minh? more likely a MAS 1936 rifle
in 7.5 mm French a standard weapon carried by
the colonial forces at that time, also WWII era
Mausers, Mosin Nagants.

The Viet Mihn used Japanese, French, American, Russian, Chinese, Swedish and just about anything else that found it's way into the country.

Just guessing, but the SKS's were probably a matter of convenience for the movie.

Huh?

In what respect has Mel Gibson 'lost it'?

Because he's a traditional Roman Catholic?

No, because he's using every chance he gets to rub this fact into the viewers face.

It would have been even more of an hysterical error had they sewn the insignia on their actual foreheads.

The series of books was called 'The Devil's Guard' and were written by George Robert Elford, IIRC.
