Anyone remember the caliber/ load of the Sharps? I'm curious as to the velocity that black powder cartridge would have. There was a scene in the film where a guy is shot, then you hear the shot a long while afterward, but I can't imagine the velocity being high enough to be that dramatic.

One of my top five favorite movies. I believe the caliber is a 45/110. You can get the Quigley Sharps replica in that caliber but I think a box of 20 rounds will set you back about $75 [shock]!

Velocity of the olf 500 grain .45 bullet propelled by 120 grains of 2F blackpowder was around 1800 FPS out of the 32" barrel, IIRC.
Now, that is a low velocity but even at maximum range, it was moving at over 500 FPS at target. With an average valocity of 1350 FPS and a range of 4000 feet, time of flight is a little over 5 seconds, given the trajectory resembling a rainbow. The sound should indeed reach the target before the bullet. But for shorter ranges, the bullet indeed reached target a few seconds prior to the report. |

You know what I like about that movie, he is a true shooter, fast, but methodical in his technique. A lesson plan for those who wish to shoot well.

I know a guy who bought a rifle similar to the Quiqley gun but its in 45-120, with an octagonal barrel. He spent $2,400 and waited 3½ years. He reloads the ammo on a single stage RCBS Rock Chucker.

THe Shiloh Sharps he has in that movie is sweet. My dad had one made, the "Quigley ifle" model but in 45-70 not 45-110 and with my dad's intials not Quigleys. Its Awesome. I'll have to post pics sometime. SHoots ridiculously good. I can get sub MOA groups at 100 yards with the peep sights.

I've got a real Sharps rifle (not carbine) that looks like it is .54 cal. I did a search a while back on the serial(?) number and found out that it is a hybrid of one Sharps model rifle barrel on a different Sharps receiver, hence not worth very much. It looks like somebody way back when wanted a rifle rather than a carbine. Anyway, I've been thinking of getting the trigger spring fixed so I could shoot it, but don't know the first thing about the ammo. Plus I'm a little leery about shooting that thing without making sure it won't act like a .45 Glock. Any thoughts?

I loved the movie so much, that I carefully watched the credits roll to the end to find out who built the rifle. It was Shiloh Sharps Manufacturing in Big Timber Montana.
So I ordered one. I ordered a Long Range Express with a 34 inch barrel in .45-70. I had to wait almost 3 years. They do not "work in" anyone. Quigley was the only exception. Here it is.
