That OS almost drove me nuts.
Me. I never get new MS OS's because they just add in a bunch of shit I dont need or want. I hold off on upgrading for as long as possible, then get the minimum required.
I had 98 till July of this year, it was starting to be more of a hassle than it was worth. Restart quit working on it about May, I would keep getting illegal operations. I now have XP and for me this works great
Let's see....
2 running XP 1 running 2000 3 running 98SE 1 running 95 Yikes. I have too many computers. |
I've got one old HP sub-notebook (P166) running 98SE.
Fileserver is 2000, MP3 server and GF's ThinkPad are 2000 pro. My desktop is XP Pro. XP on new hardware is da bomb! |
I run Win2000pro, and I have no plans of switching, I have 3 months of uptime so far.
What's WinD0z 98? You mean they finally came out with a new new OS?!? [:D]
98SE seemed ok to me for the most part though not anywhere near as good as Win2k or XP. I kept an older computer with it on it because I have a few programs that I still like that won't run on XP.
Only on a beater P233 laptop. I'd have Win2k on it if it had enough RAM to handle it. BSODs keep life interesting! [BD]
98SE on my machine.
Decently stable, about 2 crashes a month. When I change this Celeron 400 to a P4 whatever I'll get XP. |
I have it running on my backup notebook (p133)
I've got another notebook for programing radios thats running 3.11 (DX33) my reloading computer is running NT4 (p90) |
Quoted: 98SE on my machine. Decently stable, about 2 crashes a month. When I change this Celeron 400 to a P4 whatever I'll get XP. View Quote Yep. 98SE. Only crashed ONCE ever. Next year we upgrade to something else. Don't know what yet. |
i dual boot 98se and XP pro. i only keep 98 on to run the older stuff that xp wont run.
98 checking in! It's great when your OS is too old for the newest viruses!!!
Woo hoo! |
I got one oomputer that still runs Win98SE.
P3 at 933mghz. 40 gig hd 512 of ram 2 cd drives (dvd and cd-rw) Sound Blaster with Live Drive Some of my games won't rum on XP [BD] |
Quoted: 98 checking in! It's great when your OS is too old for the newest viruses!!! Woo hoo! View Quote Hmph- until last May I was still using some H-P setup with Windows 95. Always breaking down, everything was an "illegal operation"....[rolleyes] Now my 11 year old son has it- it runs like a champ. WTF??? [%|] [>:/] Now, for me, I got a Gateway something or other with Win XP Home. NO problems at all![:)] |
One running 98SE only.
One dual-booted for 95 and NT4 Server. One dual-booted for 98SE and 2000 Pro. One dual-booted for 98SE and 2000 Adv. Server. One running 2000 Pro, soon to be dual-booted for both 2000 Pro and XP Pro. |
Wolfpack: Had 98SE till last month, I really like this XP now though! View Quote You did reset everything to "CLASSIC", right? [:D] |

I just got rid of it (and I'm a PC tech)...
My reson for ditching 98? I got a P4 with hyper-threading, and that requires XP to work... I absolutely despise Windows XP (If I have to endure JUST ONE more wizard, animated character, other cutsy tweak, or if I see MSN Messenger re-install itself ONE more time and razz me to get a 'passport'...) but it's the only OS that actually supports HT... |

View Quote Yup... 2k will 'report' the 'extra CPU', but it actually runs SLOWER due to the fact that it's not a real CPU, and 2k treats it as such... So 2k effectively doesn't aupport HT... |

I really like XP when I got my new comp, I had it on it at first but when I started to upgrade prepherals just hook them up and run the driver software thats it. now i have to update everything because some programs just do not work even with the updates, so when I get my cable modem hooked up now updating should be a brease while not having to spend a whole week downloading.

WinMe/LinuxMandrake7.2 dualboot. Would go back to Win98 in a heartbeat, if I could find the bloody Win95 disk I had updated from!
Get this for antiquated: AMD K6III/450MHz 64MB EDO RAM 6GB HD 16x CD-ROM ATI Rage w/8MB RAM 56K Modem but installed a USB 2.0 card so I can use the cablemodem: The motherboard won't handle the 2.0, so I'm stuck with 1.1 data rate! I also have a Commodore 64 in storage somewhere, with all the software from when I was in college, and the only guy in the honors dorm with his own computer! Get this: a Genie 1MB hard drive! WOOHOO! Anybody for a game of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy? Now that I have a new job, I hope to get a better machine, right after I get a new 1911. A man's got to have his priorities, right? |
I still use it on my home computer...
Won't change until I absolutely have to... I have a laptop at work with XP if I need it. |
Quoted: I did until yesterday. View Quote You stole my words! I used 98SE until yesterday, when I installed the 2000Pro I got for Christmas. DrMark |

New new computer had XP on it, and I just bought XP for my daughters, so 2 98SE's down, and one laptop with ME on board to go.
I'm not in a big hurry to get rid of ME. Surprisingly stable, with few problems.[:O] My experience with ME seems to be the exception. Jay |

Just get virtual machine software and run all your Operating Systems on one PC. VMware

still running Win95 233 mhz -- WOO HOO
it aint pretty but gets the job done ....barely |
I thought CNN said something like 30% of the users out there still use Win98, which Microsoft says they will no longer support (or was that Win95?)

My computer in my apartment, which only has 450 Mhz behind it, has 98SE. I like it.
My parents have XP on the home computer, a near brand new Dell. It blows. I hate it. Fucker runs some things slower that my computer. Working in the system to try and haul spywear out (that it attracts like a motherfucker and that Spybot sometimes misses) is a bastard. Sooooo many fucking processes running sometimes. And that goddamn multiple user thing. And worse, it runs Morrowind and Operation: Flashpoint so fucking badly, yet is well beyond recommended system specs. I can't figure it out. Nothing I've done to optimize the system (which it shouldn't need, being fucking new) has worked. Still loads and runs like total shit. 2.2 Ghz and Morrowind loads like ASS. So does Flashpoint. WHAT THE FUCK?! I seriously want to tear XP out of this thing and stick 98 back on. |
Quoted: other cutsy tweak View Quote [wave] [lol] Why would I change when I'm still learning this one? |

Quoted: I bet your parents dell is a celeron with a 5400 rpm harddrive and not enough ram.. View Quote No. At least not according to the Device Manager. It could use more RAM, but you can always use more RAM. I just found out the virtual memory was set at between 150 and 200 megs or so and Windows was handling how much in the range. That might have been some of the problem. I set it at 1028. I was gonna do 500 or so, but an experienced Morrowind player said 1028 was the way to go. |

Im running win 2k. I know somone who is running 98SE with no problems. Having worked in tech support I dont see many porblems with 98, some with 2k. Most problems are Win XP and alot of those are due to people who cant find something, or dont know how to use it.

Win 98SE here too. Works good for this 500mhz pentium III. State of the art when I bought it. Once in a while it freezes up and also error messages occasionally but it will do till I get a new computer.
I do; TCS still has it installed on their comps and can't change their software. My home comp has it and I'm not about to pay umpteen hundreds of dollars just to update.

Windows 98 makes baby Jesus cry
Both my game machines are XP Firewall is openbsd 3.4 Server is NetWare 6.0 throw in some spare freebsd/linux machines |
Win98SE here as well. I just use this thing as a comm device on the internet anyway, so I'm not asking much from it. It never crashes or has any other problems. Runs my DSL just fine, and the rest of my stuff is equally old, so my camera, etc all work fine.

At home I have two PC's running Windows 2000.
At work I have the following: 17 - Win 98 SE 9 - Win 2K 4 - Win 95 3 - Win NT 4 Not all hardware or software runs on newer operating systems. It's about what gets the job done, not about which OS has the snazziest interface. |

It seems xp is easier to make work right when it has a brain fart than anything I have ever used before. |
