All are good choices though being a mini-series gives Band of Brothers a little bit of an edge in that allows for better character development.  The only movie I might add would be Midway.  For whatever reason I just love that movie.

I'm biased.  But the Band of Brothers was the best thing ever put on film for entertainment.

In no particular order:

Battle Cry
A platoon finds itself in the Battle of the Bulge.  Surprisingly honest for 1955.

Dr. Strangelove
Dark comedy about nuclear war.

The Dam Busters
British raid on German dams with bouncing bombs.

Saving Private Ryan
A lone surviving brother is the target if a search just after D-Day.

I can't pick just 5.

Breaking them down to campaign and/or conflict (20th Century/present) they are as follows for me:

WWI:
The Blue Max
All Quiet on the Western Front.

WWII (European Theater):
Saving Pvt Ryan (D-Day)
A Bridge Too Far (Operation Market Garden)
Band of Brothers (D-Day, Bulge)
When Trumpets Fade (Hurtgen Forrest)
Das Boot (subtitled version)
Tuskeegee Airmen
Memphis Belle
The Bridge at Remagan (sp?)
Battle of Britain

WWII (Pacific Theater):
Midway
Tora Tora Tora

Viet Nam:
Go Tell the Spartans
Green Berets (even with its hokey acting/fx)
We Were Soldiers
Hanoi Hilton
Gardens of Stone (I was at Ft. Myer when it was made)
BAT 21

Modern War (Post Viet Nam):
Black Hawk Down
The Beast (Soviets in Afghanistan)
K-19 (After getting past Harrison Ford sounding like Boris Baddinoff)
Heartbreak Ridge

Others that are favorites:

Kellys Hero's
Von Ryans Express
Catch-22
The Dirty Dozen
A Midnight Clear
The Big Red One
Zeppellin (WWI)
Desert Fox
Platoon
Appoclypse Now
Guns of Navarone

Haven't yet seen all of "Band of Brothers" so I can't comment other to say that what I saw, it was very good.  Book was excellent.

OK
for the saving private ryan suck-fest, the first 30 minutes were incredible film making.  The rest was ridiculous.  Sorry. And that final defence was the dumbest thing I had seen since the Ronin ambush.  Dye may be a great detail guy, but he sucked as a planner.  I also don't buy hanks as a Ranger company commander.  I've known too many.
I loved band of brothers, but the acting was atrocious.  There is a reason you won't see most of those guys again.  A shame because the movie making (spielberg knows his shit) was great.
So, without further ado, the definitive list.
Patton (the battle scenes are lame by today's standards, but war is about leaders and patton was the man)

The Longest Day (cheesy, but captured the spirit of the age)

Black Hawk Down (One word:  Intense)

Cross of Iron (war ain't pretty, and this movie reflected it)

All Quiet on the Western Front  (Even in the 1930s, best reflection of small unit dynamics that I have ever seen, would love for them to do a remake.  Fantastic book as well)

i just realized that my favorite movies I have read the book (exception being cross of iron)
hmmm.  Subliminaly carrying over my love for the books into the movie?  Who knows?

For those who are a little less American-centric than Steyr

1) Lawrence Of Arabia
2) Cross of Iron
3) Das Boot

MEGA FORCE !!
[LOL][ROFL][ROFL]

oh, it could have been good, it had a huge stunt budget, lots of custom and military hardware and a great filming location.
It also had Barry Bostwick and a bunch of fags running around in tight satin jumpsuits and headbands, spewing really lame dialog. [puke]

Yeah, Dances with Wolves. The Civil War scenes and the war against the Native Americans (yes, I know, they came from Asia, yaddy-yaddy-yaddy...). The rest of the movie was cool, too. Same thing with Lawrence of Arabia, one of the best pictures ever made. If I didn't think Gone With the Wind was a bit hokey as a war movie, I would have put it in my list as well.
