Just enough time for me to get my stuff loaded inside. I waited until the locksmith came to post in case it was my personal error. Apparently the lock mechanism failed completely and now it won't release the bolts. 48 fucking hours old. The pisser is that I went with a good safe company that gets recommended meanwhile my buddies Costco special that is less then half the price of mine is going strong for 5 years.

I'll update but it looks like they will need to drill out the brand new door, open the mechanism, get my stuff out, and either repair or replace.

I will need to call Amsec again. Updates to follow.

Long enough to rack up $400 to $800, depending on the model.

Did you purchase a warranty with the safe?

Sometimes things fail.  It's how they respond is what makes the difference.  From what I've read here, they seem like a A+ company and will take care of you.

That sucks!  Post lots of pics as the locksmiths do their work.  Always wondered what the "oh shit" manual of arms for this type of situation entailed.

I will depend upon the safe. When the dial failed on our work safe the locksmith had a set of detailed instructions and plans on where to drill and how to open it. He had it open in about 30 minutes.

I've had to be present while locksmiths were drilling out malfunctioning locks on some big league doors a few times.  From what I saw it takes some specialized tools, specialized knowledge, and a lot of hours listening to the drill do it's thing.  I imagine a proper gun safe is similar but (hopefully) not as much drilling.

Had a new Liberty tip over on the handle they covered the parts I had to pay a locksmith to install. Had the keypad changed to a dial going off his opinion . They replace 2-3 failed keypads a month .

Update 1: Locking mechanism has been drilled out, still will not open. Either the relocker is not releasing or the internals are broke.

same here
had one fail at work
to start with he put a machine on it that ran for a few days trying every combination

that didn't work so he drilled about a 1/4" hole and it was open in a couple minutes

Shit man, you like living dangerously?  Set a PM for that to replace every couple years.  Arteries are cheap.

Sucks to hear OP- sounds like AmSec is going to make it right though?

Mine too lol, you can replace batteries from the outside so I never thought much about it.

Amsec and The SafeGuy made it right for me when my ESL5 malfunctioned.  That archived thread is from October 2016.  Anyways, a bad bunch of locks slipped thru the QA process, and Amsec was very helpful in the end.  Frustrating to not get at your own goodies, on demand.  Good luck.

Prepare for the real fun.  We had a safe fail like that in the military and it was time for "torch thru the door to reach the locking bars and then burn them in two".  They sent us a replacement door with an improved lock.

We ended up replacing the locking mechanisms on all our safes (12 of them) with Sargent & Greenleaf models with all brass internals, because the failed unit used plastic parts to hold the tumblers, one had cracked and the tumbler was spinning rather than locking in when the combination was dialed in.

This was kind of my thought on it too which is why at this point I've just been curious how long they will last.
Im probably going to be getting a bigger safe this year and was planning on changing them if I gave it to my Dad but my wifes like “why? youre just gonna fill the new one up too and need another one.”
I was thinking about something nicer like a Liberty but shit Ill probably just get another Cannon.

So my takeaway here is to buy a safe just good enough to keep passing bad guys out, but just crappy enough that you can break back into it yourself if you need to?

It will take him longer to get his tools out and put them away than to open the safe.  RSC rated boxes be what they do.

The cam pin snapped and locked the bolt work at an angle so it could not disengage. Had to drill the side and knock it open with a sledge.
