I will be adding one to my collection now that the xmas shopping is done and thought I would see what is favored.

I had been leaning towards one of the HK clones until the "Are FALs worth the money ARs..." thread, and now I am torn between the two.

The grip on the HK feels better to me and I do like the location of the cocking lever. However I am under the impression that the FAL is more reliable as well as more accurate.

Also that pic of the FAL with the Reflex on it didnt help.

So which should it be?

Since I'm divorced. I sleep with my Armalite AR10A2 Carbine.

 I like American MADE weapons.

You may want to check out the "Special Edition Black Rifles"

I'm sure an SEBR AR10A4 Carbine would make you happy.

Good luck and look out. Here comes all the FAL Fans.

I have two ARS FAL carbines that are kinda cool.

I will qualify this by saying I have a SEBR carbine on order... but it will never see a round down the barrel, it is a collectible.  I recently picked this up.  It belonged to a buddy of mine, and when I played with it I fell in love.

I paid $600, you could reasonably expect to pay $750-$800 for something like this with the DSA parts and optics rail.  For $600 you can currently get a FAL carbine from www.ohiorapidfire.com.  The guys at ORF know their shit!

So, you can spend $1,250 plus on an M1A Socom carbine or the SEBR carbine, or you can spend half that and get a FAL...

FAL mags, $3... AR10 and M14 mags $40 and up

FAL parts plentiful and cheap

FAL is a much simpler design to work on

FAL is extensively battle proven - more so then the other rifles, although the M1A/M14 has a good track record.  The AR10 just doesn't have enough time in country to judge its longterm performance.

FALs they just look mean... no refined corners and curves, angles and attitude baby!

Dave, I thought about a 308 AR, between the price, the mags, the parts, its just not what I am looking for. Part of the resason I narrowed it down to the 2 is the prices ans the amount of extras out there for them. That and you cant beat the price of the mags, and i am a mag whore!

Tiv,
My buddy has the 18" M1a as his truck gun and I do like it. For some reason though it feels kinda off for me. I have an M1A that I love but whenever I shoot his it just doesnt feel right, the balance is just not what I am used to I think. The one in the pick looks nice none the less!

HiremR,
That is a damm nice rifle and I have seen that pic here ans over at FALfiles.com, ans its part os the reason I am really looking at the FAL versus the HK91 platform.

I had a HK911, and it is one of "those" you regret parting with, even though I made good money on the deal, I still wish I had kept it. THat is one reason I have been leaning towards the HLK91s, but I am not so sure the HK91 holds much of anything over the FAL. The few important things to me are:

1. Reliablity - When the most accurate gun in the world has a malfuction, it is just a club. But a reliable gun will at the very least send rounds down range or save your ass in close.
2. Accuracy - Second only to #1. If you have reliablity, then hitting your target is the next step.
3. Ability to Service - Hirem hit it on the nose. Lots of extra parts out there and cheap mags. Both the 91 and the FAL share this.
4. Fit and function - SHould not be hard to handle or uncomfortable to fire. There is room to sway here as this is not nearly as important as #1 or #2.

Any HK guys going to chime in?

CH

How much of a performance hit do you take with those short barrelled .308s?  What kind of range can one expect out of that 16" M1A?

A .308 in carbine length is just plain dumb.

What would be the point?  An AR fills that requirement.
Link Posted: 12/25/2003 10:28:14 AM EDT

I think 16" is too short for a .308 .

18.5" is more like it . May not sound like much but if you want a shorty carbine go with a different calibre .

You lose 200 fps going down to a 16 inch barrel, but you are still throwing 147 grain bullets down field as opposed to 62 grain.  Also, many folks hunt deer with their .308 carbines and in many states you can't hunt deer with a .223.

And then there is always the all important, what freakin difference could it possibly make to you how somebody else wants to spend THEIR money!

Goddamit! I finally forced myself to get rid of my scout and you had to go and post that.

Someone please go over, in as much detail as possible, why a .308 in 16" makes no sense so I will not be forced to buy that thing.

I would think that we were all past this type of thing. If you are here to flame, let the door hit you on the way out.

It doesnt have to make sense, and only has to fill the requirment of my wanting it, period. Stupid is thinking that a only one gun fills a a certain requirement. Ya the AR covers alot of needs, but that is not whats at questions here.

That sums it up for my response.

.223 not legal for Deer in Va.

Carbine, cause my shots will likely be inside 100-150 yards. Quick handling. Using 150 gr. Hornady SSTs.

Raf, you are such a party pooper.  I shoot mine during the day, flash isn't an issue... in fact, its kind of fun!  Want to see some real flash, try a krinkov... woohoo!  In a few months, those flash suppressors just might become an option again.

I like the short 308.  Got a Springfield Armory SAR-48 Bush rifle that I picked up in 88.  Mounted a Leupold 3x M8 scope on a ARMS reciever cover and drop a whitetail doe at 300m in 89 (was trying for a handgun hunt and nothing closer than 150m).

This tool started life as a AR10A4/C/LEO (I wanted a chrome barrel, thus the reason I went this route), now it has a RRA CAR stock with a T forestock and a Smith Vortex. 6k rounds through it to date.

Very nice.

I have pretty much decided on the FAL. I think the Ohio Rapid Fire Carbine may be a good start. I really like that short handguard front end that DSA sells but will most likely wait until tax refund time to put one of those together. This is really great as will soon have new platform to play with!! Keep the pics coming.

BTW, I have a DSA medium contour SS. Niiiice rifle, but it needs a sibling.
