Three years before he passed away, for Christmas I gave my Dad back the Model 1906 Winchester .22 pump he first shot as a kid. It had had so many rounds through it from him as a kid, and then me after he had passed it on to me that it had been out of action as "Unoperable and Unsafe" for quite awhile. I had all the action parts tig welded up and machined back to spec., the barrel bored and a liner installed, the stock refinished, and everything blued to a rich glossy black finish. When he opened the box, his face lit up, and he couldn't quite believe it was the same gun at first. I had never, and I mean NEVER seen him quite so excited. His smile and obvious joy made me feel so glad that I had done it. He never shot it again, but cared for it lovingly, and kept it close to him till he passed away. I have shot it several times since he passed away, and it is a special treat each time, knowing that he loved it so much. I have told my two boys that it must never leave the family.
