Yesterday when I got back home I got two magnificent news...

#1
The president of Brazil signed a decree (later on backed up by the /Brazil Congress) making illegal for all citizens peasants to own guns. Only the military, police and registered security agencies can have them.

If you are a gun owner now, you have two options:

a) you can turn in your guns and live happily ever after (untill you get whacked by some narco/killer/guerrilla/paramilitary/etc/etc)

b) file an exception to this decree/law providing that you need a gun for your own safety (you have two weeks to do this).

If you do not comply, guns will be seized and you'll spend 4 years in Club Fed. (recreational purposes are not covered within the reach of this stupid stupid law)

The reason for this atrocity?
90% of the crimes in Brazil are commited with guns and they had more than 400.000 homicides with guns in 1990-2000.

We all know the bad guys will turn in their guns and disband their criminal organizations now

From now on, if you want to have a gun, you'll have to be 25 years old and provide that you need a gun for your own safety. In October 2005 they will have a referendum to ask the population if they want all this exceptions cancelled, and finally have a "guns free Brazil", in which case, NOBODY will be able to own a gun.

By now you might be asking yourself "why does Deimos give a crap about what happens in Brazil if he lives in Argentina?"
Well, because of this Mercosur thing, Brazil and Argentina tend to have similar policies, and if you add the fact that historically our goverment likes to suck ass to other countries, you have a dark scenario for Argentina in the near future. Not to mention that our actual goverment is very anti and the general population consider gun owners as crazy people waiting to snap.

But I said I got 2 news remember... So as I was cursing this stupid  reaction by the Brazilian goverment and thinking all of this things, I got access to news #2...

#2
While disposing of 4500 guns seized from the bad guys, our ministry of security stated that guns are bad and that the policy of this administration would be the total disarmament of the population...

As I said, just fucking peachy...

I really don't know how's the actual system on BRazil, but if they implement something like that in Argentina, they don't need for us to come to tell them we want a permit, all of our guns are registered on a federal registry. Only illegal guns are not there.

I swear to God I'll throw my guns to the sea before giving them to the goverment... ALWAYS cornholing us.

Jesus.

You think you’ve got crime problems now?  Australia and the UK have proven beyond a shadow of doubt the correlation between “gun control” and crime rates.

I can’t imagine what it’s going to look like now… well, actually I can and visions of shooting galleries come to mind.

What a stinking mess.

I swear to god, I remember that Brazil banned firearms when the drug dealers became supeer-violent, like in the 1980's.  But they actually saw how now only criminals were the only ones with guns and decided to legalize gun ownership.

I remember this, because it's very unusual for countries to reverse gun control laws. It happened fairly recently, like 3-4 years ago.

No different than here!  If it got that bad here, it would be made difficult because of the sheer numbers of firearms, and ex post facto rules (guns would have to be purchased, as the gov't can't take without compensation).

It's all about the consolidation of power.  It can happen with malice, or as a side effect of nanny state socialisim.  One of the more foul trends here is to buy Law Enforcement with exemptions.  Not just exemptions for the department, but for officers that are off duty too.  Thus, LEOs (at the political level) become 'privleged', and often stand behind antigun legislations.

That totally SUCKS!!!!

If I were in that position right now (2 week timespan), I won't elaborate on what I would do.  (Can you ship them out of the country in that 2 week period, while you move? [;)])

Depends on the extent of your collection, I would guess.

Sadly, they just made it so nobody is safe. [:(]

Nestor, that's called 'paranoia sindrome' [:d]......
Brazil's been disarmed for over 30 years now, (civies can not own anything over a .380), how do i know? my uncles lives there, in CURITIBA.  They never had a big gun market eitherway so, nothing really changed there, only people is reading more.  As far as Argentina is concerned, and from what i know (first hand, gun 101s, read my IM) NOBODY is going to disarm anybody down here.....disarming such an 'armed' population like ours, would be virtually impossible, not to mention cultures are completely diferent, we as argentinians have been armed from the very beggining of our nation, Brzail hasn't......bottom line is, dont forget, even tho 'el banco mundial' offers money to nations that destroy guns, these guns have to be those guns taken to the 'bad boys'...and they ARE destroying those guns.  Civilian guns? well, don't forget my friend, that the gun market down here is a BIG busines...guns, tenencias, portaciones, reempadronamientos...you get the idea.
Time to loose your esfinter, rest asured, if they one day disarm, you and i will not see it.
HUNTER.
