I dl'd an mp3 of the qj version and it smokes!!!! 'Bout 3:06 long. Check it out.

Yes. He gets a credit on the show.

ETA:his work in Hollywood: Film soundtracks like In the Heat of the Night, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, The Colour Purple, In Cold Blood and The Wiz; and TV series such as Ironside (one of the first recordings to use a synthesizer), Sanford and Son and The Bill Cosby Show. Again, to Quincy it was just another stage in his evolution. In the '70s and '80s he became a superstar producer, and Disc 3 collects the finest moments of that part of his life: Michael Jackson's Thriller and Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough, The Brothers Johnson's Strawberry Letter 23, Paul Simon's Something so Right and perhaps his crowning achievement, We Are the World.

He wrote lots more stuff than this.

FWIW I know that the bass player was Chuck Rainey- guy played on everybody's record or theme in the 1960's and 1970s....

i think the tune is actually called "Watermelon Man".
i remember the 82nd ABN jazz ensemble playing it at my high school.
