Manhunt Snares Felon Suspected Of Shooting Deputies
Dec 22, 2003 7:00 pm US/Pacific
An intensive, six-hour manhunt by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department culminated Monday in the capture of a convicted felon and gang member who allegedly shot two sheriff's detectives in Bellflower and was himself wounded.
The deputies -- a male and female -- were hospitalized for treatment of wounds characterized as non-life-threatening, said Deputy Brian Lendman.
The female deputy "was struck in the hip," and the other had a "grazing wound to (the) shoulder," he said.
Deputies had gone to a home in the 9100 block of Palm Street to speak to a young female runaway about the whereabouts of 24-year-old Javier Torres, who was wanted for an alleged probation violation, Lendman said.
“The suspect turned out to be at the residence," Lendman said.
About 8:10 a.m., Torres "exited the rear of the house, armed with a handgun, and fired numerous rounds at the deputies, who were in the rear of the location."
About 2:40 p.m., Torres surrendered after holing up in a nearby shed, where he had been tracked by police dogs.
"We made an announcement and he came out without a search warrant being served," Lendman said.
The suspect had a gunshot wound to his foot, "which we assume came from deputies returning fire," Lendman added.
Sheriff Lee Baca told KCAL9 that deputies from the fugitive team had "pretty much posted themselves at the back of the house. He (Lendman) fired shots through the walls of the building at the deputies."
Baca said deputies knew the suspect had been hit because "where he was scaling walls, there was blood found."
About 40 deputies closed off a four-block area and a special weapons team was brought in to search for Torres.
