Apprently I am getting a new valve train for the Mach 1 I am getting ready to restore.  [:(]

The previous owner seems to have put some incorrect rods in there, and to replace them requires buying a whole new valve train kit (according to my mechanic) that costs about $500 in parts alone.  Damn that sucks - but at least the engine will be in much better shape, with all new parts when he's done.

coming from a man that has rebuilt MANY engines, and did his first in a '68 mustang...........dont dilly dally, pull the damn engine and do it all at once, new parts in an old engine dont do anything but wear out the new parts faster, do it ALL at once

and what is this "mechanic" shit?  some basic tools, a manual, and you can rebuild that engine yourself...........might have to have somebody knowledgable do your timing and what not, but basic engine rebuilding is a snap...........just have the machine shop do the things you cant (bore, hone, cam bearings, rods on pistons, etc...........)

I can't tell you how many of those words have no meaning at all to me.  [:D]   When it comes to this kind of stuff, I'm all thumbs.  While I'm sure I could learn and figure a lot of it out if someone was helping me, I'm not sure I trust myself to start taking things apart that I cannot put together again.

Actually, I was originally under the impression that the engine just needed a tuneup and some new hoses, and should run fine (at least that's what the guy who sold it to me said - caveat emptor) - so I asked my mechanic to do that, and to install a new distributor (one of those cool unified thingys).  It was when he was doing this that he discovered the problem, and apparently Chevy sells the individual parts, but Ford only sells a complete kit.

I am planning to do all the interior restoration myself, and as much of the body work as I can do without having to rent welding equipment - but I just didn't trust myself to do the engine (plus, I was under the impression it didn't need rebuilding).

I've noticed your sig, and if it wasn't for all of SorryOccifer's excellent advice, I'd probably have started hassling you with questions by now. [;)]

It's a 73 - the last gasp, and has a (non-original) 351 cleveland.  Right now it's red (also non-original) and has a vinyl roof.
I'm planning on dropping the vinyl and repainting it in metallic pewter - but before body and interior I want to get the engine (and all the mechanical stuff) running properly.

What color is yours?  and is it completely restored?  (drooool) [:)]

I don't know, but I had the presence of mind to furnish my wife with a Bushmaster catalog, highlighted with things from $5 to $500 I wanted, about two months ago.

All I know is, anyone who was buying me something this year, did so from that catalog.  My wife sent in a consolidated order.

No flannel shirts or butt candles this year.  [<]:)]

Smartest thing I've ever done for Christamas ideas.  Doing it next year, too.

No shit....DK, you are getting assraped on parts.  Go here:
www.summitracing.com

Check out parts prices.  You can get a kit to rebuild that engine for roughly $500-$1500 depending on how radical you want to get.  And labor for an engine rebuild should be about 6-8 hours I am thinking, most car dealers charge $60/hr. which means $500 in labor.  For between 1K and 1.5K you can completely rebuild that pig.
