Whoever did the caption got it wrong.  That's NOT SpaceShipOne behind them.  That's their launch platform, White Knight.

THIS is SpaceShipOne:

Um, methinks Steve Ruark needs to sit down and actually watch the movies.  I'd say that guy's a hobbit, not an elf.

It's pretty common. I've seen alot of soliders doing it. I think they do it just so when they kneel, that is the knee that hits the ground.

Tolkien never really specified the shape of the ears of either elves or hobbits. It's a good visual cue though for movie audiences, especially since you are stuck with human actors, there being a notable dearth of both halfling and elven actors out there to draw from.

About the most that Tolkien really says about the specific appearance of elves is that they are taller and fairer than humans.  That they never grow old, though age does show on their faces, mostly as an expression or impression of immense wisdom.   Some elvish peoples tend to be fair skinned and haired, while others are darker. What Tolkien means by tall is not enumerated, but most Tolkienites consider that Elves are usually above 6 feet in height, usually quite a bit more, with many of the ancient elvish lords being over 7 feet tall.  While typically elves seem to be described as being graceful and lithe of build, many of the ancient elven heros are described as being immensely powerful of body as well and some were capable of taking on Balrogs and holding their own. That elves are typically stronger and faster than mortal men is generally accepted, but the Numenorean race of men is an exception being nearly as tall and strong as elves and generally much wiser and more fair than lesser men.  Thus Aragorn's endurance, strength, speed and all around abilities are much greater than anyone else's, plus he eventually lives to be about 212 and only dies at that point by choice, choosing to go out while he is still in control of both mind and body.

In general, I would say that none of the human actors playing elves really stack up to Tolkien's descriptions. Cate Blanchette and Liv Tyler, while both beautiful, both lack that otherworldly quality that Tolkien describes in the Firstborn. While Hugo Weaving is an excellent actor and his Elrond is as good as can be expected, they should have done something about the hairline (Elves do not go bald) and he's really not a good looking man.  Neither is the guy they picked for Haldir, though he looks better with his own hair color.

All criticism aside, I love the Elvish swords and spears/glaives.  Definitely a cool interpretation of Elven arms and armor.  Tolkien never went into any great detail about either.

While I admire elves and Numenorean men, I identify best with Hobbits, so did Tolkien.
