There are two ways to go. Go with CMP and you get a good M1 at a great price. The process can be good for learning how to shoot better, especially if you go through a proper clinic or match and get good coaching.
Your other option is to go to a good smith like Fulton Armory or Orion 7 and buy a properly built rifle. Yeah you'll pay twice the price of a CMP rifle, but you'll probably get a nicer rifle, and do not have the wait.
Now, you do own the CMP rifle, contrary to what you have gathered, and you can sell it if you wish after a year or so without any trouble. There are a lot of guys out there who buy their max alotment every single year. Do you think that they keep every single one of those rifles. That's 8 rifles a year. In 4 years, that's 32 rifles. I know guys that have that many, but they keep buying more.
They buy rifles, keep the ones they like, take the collectable parts they need to complete or correct rifles and sell off the extras to finance the next group.
This is legal and the CMP doesn't worry about it either. Rifle sales are a revenue generation program that provides them with the funds they need to run their marksmanship programs. They also know that the flow of rifles out of Anniston could evaporate the instant a democratic president takes the oath, so moving them out fast is in their best interest.
