A buddy of mine is looking for some software to keep track of his gun collection. Anybody got a specific recommendation before I build him a database?

There are plenty of hobby shareware data bases that would work. There's nothing to making an data base to track them though. If he's an FFL he'll need written permission to keep his books via a computer rather than a bound book.

Not trusting computers any farther than a can throw them - I manage security for a network - I take a picture of the weapon and then a close-up of the serial number and include them with the receipt in a fireproof document safe.

Between the FBI's carnivore and the ATF's Brady database, do you really need your own?

I'm in the same boat Paul, I do Network Admin. He's not an FFL, just wants any easier way to find the details on his items. I keep pictures of the weapon too, but hadn't thought of a close-up of the serial #. Good idea!

i take pics and record serial numbers, i keep the hard copies at my parent's house, i keep digital copies on my computer and hidden on a remote webpage somewhere

mona bought me a copy of Guntracker last year. I'd HIGHLY reccomend it for a collection. It allows you to setup you collection with description, pics, accesories. tracks relative value, maintains reports for location, value and scheduling of cleaning and routine maintance. It also inclused the BLUEBOOK of gun values to give you a base idea of values.

I use it frequently. I REALLY like it. SHop around before you buy. I have seen it online from 19.99 to 75.00.

There is a very good program called NM Gun Collector Software. I believe it is available through AimSurplus.com. The price is very reasonable and it allows the importation of photos and all types of verifying and supportive information as to value, receipts, etc.

Works on WIN 95, 98, NT (SP 4), 2000, ME and XP.

It is very popular with the Milsurp collectors since it allows so much info to be kept in a very accessible way.

Will work for any type of firearm.

I agree, excel is great for that purpose. maybe someone can share a data file that we could all use?

I think using that ebay program as a guide something just as good or maybe even better can be made using MS ACCESS or Excel

I have the demo version of Guntracker. Only looked at it a few times last year. I believe the demo limitation is the # of guns you can have in your collection. That is a decent prices on ebay so I believe I will get a copy too.

This makes me think... I need some money right now but I love programming. If I were to write a quality program for tracking guns, do you think many people would pay 5 to 6 dollars for it?

Sunset04. If the price is that cheap I'm sure people would buy it. Any more like around 20 dollars or so and people then think about pirating software.

Maybe customize a program more towards black rifles and such weapons. Instead of having it written for bolt action weapons. Just a thought.

Include the option of having photos attached for proof of serial # and what the weapon looks like.

Yeah, I could even have it attempt to search for images of specified models on Google or something.

Anyways, I think I'm going to give it a try. It will be a fun project.

Hell yes BUT it has to have a place for a pic or 2, how the gun was acquired (trade or bought), price paid or what it was traded for, current value, date purchased and from who, and a bunch of other stuff.

If I were gonna do this (which I can't so I'll ramble here) I'd have it so that it would be like a spredsheet at first then if you wanted detail on a gun you could double click it and a new page would pop up. The page would have a 2x2 inch pic of so of the gun in the corner with up to 4 thumbnails under it and they could be clicked to replace the default pic until the page is closed. All of the info would be easy to read and not hard to find. If the gun was traded for some gun I used to have and that gun is still in the database it would allow me to click and see what I traded for it right away. Also for target rifles it would be nice to have a place where info could be put such as best grouping, yards at that grouping, grain of bullet, brand of bullet, temp that day, wind, what range it was done and on what day also a place for a pic of the target.

I was using Excel, but then I found a program called Arsenal 3.0. You can put in any info you want, including images, web links, etc. You can even use multiple databases to keep track of other collections. The DB behind it is Access and works pretty good.

Well, just went to their website [url]http://www.penguinsoftwareworks.com/index.jsp[/url] and found out that they're not going to sell it anymore. Oh well.

Check out NM Gun Collector SW. Clay Pryor is a collector and developed it for those of us who like to log our collections (or have to because we have C&R FFLs).
