I was down at the Seattle Police Athletic Assn. range today with a couple of friends shooting my AR. While we were there, a couple of salesmen showed up to demo this monster for SWAT:
 Accuracy International AW 50 SPECIFICATION Caliber .50 BMG (12.7 X 99) Heavy match grade Fluted Barrel length 27 inches with muzzle brake Barrel twist 1 in 15 Magazine capacity 5 shot Weight 30 lb / 13.5 kg Overall Length 53.3 in / 135 cm (Folded 43.5 ins / 110.5 cm) Color Black or Green Two stage, fully adjustable Trigger set to 4 lb Full length aluminum folding chassis enclosed by scuff resistant polymer stock sides Rear Support leg Machined wrought steel action body ... all for the, low, low price of $11,000 (scope not included)! Definitely the LOUDEST gun I have ever FELT (standing 15 feet away from the shooter). First shot set off a car alarm and everyone cheered.  The SWAT guys had to admit that the department would probably never sign off on one at that price, but at least they'd have fun looking.

Well, to give you the answer of the SWAT guys I briefly chatted with, they are mainly concerned with having the capacity to disable vehicles and/or shoot though the front windshield of an airline cockpit. I don't think they have any delusions about taking 1000 yd shots in an urban environment.
It also sounded as though the salesmen were trying to get SPD to buy one at a substantial discount, in hopes that a lot of other West Coast departments would feel the need to jump on the bandwagon. "SPD has an AW 50. Why don't we?" |

SWAT snipers usually take their shots from relatively close ranges. There's no need for a .50 BMG. That gun's impressive as hell though.

There is mainly one reason for LE to have a .50 BMG:
Shooting into an airplane cockpit. If their jurisdiction includes an airport or heliport, then maybe they should have one. At 11,000 dollars that might be a waste of taxpayer money. There are cheaper 50s. CRC |

It is better to have than to need. If the local SWAT finds it needs a .50BMG in a given situation, it would be better to have one on hand then to have to go to the local gun store in time of need.

Well why not a Armalite AR-50 with it's effective brake for less than 3,000 if they REALLY NEED a 50?

Wasn't the [b].338 Lapua[/b] round invented to go through cockpit windows? I know a .50 would too but I thought I saw somewhere that the Lapua was made for that.

I seem to remember 2 guys in body armor keeping the entire LAPD at bay for quite some time and doing some serious damage. 2 Rounds from the 50 would have quickly solved that problem. Any more questions?

Hey! SWAT the movie just made it to the UK, and I _know_ that most police sidearms can penetrate airplanme cockpits when loaded with siimunitions!

While I think it is one hell of a rifle, I'm just not convinced that any bolt action rifle needs to cost 11K. I think I could sacrifice and just get the Barrett M82 and have $3.5K to spend on my US Optics scope and ammo....

HELL!!!!!! Shoot through a cockpit windshield with that thing and it's likely it'll go through the passenger cabin and out the tail end!
I do see a need to disable vehicles by shooting through engine blocks though. |

BTWW, as a side note for those who may not be aware, the cockpit windows of an airliner are about 2 inches thick, give or take a tad.
Considering what we read about so many rounds not penetrating car windshields, a bigger hammer may be in order. |

Somebody help me out here.
I recall someone was trying to introduce a "reduced" .50. About ¾ the length of the .50 BMG with 90% of the power? Something like that. Reduced recoil was one of the features as well. Anyway, it sounds like something a PD could find more useful than the full powered BMG round. BTW. The scope's a Swarski. But if I bought a .50 I would buy a bunch of cheap scopes just to see how long they held up. [:D] |

whats with the stock on these things, It looks like some rube goldberg invention with bells and whistles hanging off it. I like a nice ergonomic, sleek, design that is functional. not a xmas tree with orniments(sp) hanging off it!
