Under the terms of the plan, current members of the IEMA--which includes Circuit City, CompUSA, Gamesource, Electronics Boutique, KB Toys, Kmart, Target and Wal-Mart--will begin requiring all purchasers of M-rated games to present identification proving they are over 17. While some IEMA members--most notably Blockbuster Entertainment and Toys-R-Us--already demand I.D. from M-rated game buyers, the system will be new to several chains, including Best Buy.

My personal Opinion what good were the ratings since they were never enforced anyway. Also The Majority of  Gamers are about  20+ anyway based on my oberservations and personal experiance.

I think good parenting would solve this, but then again, sometimes it's hard to tell what a game has in it by the box and previews.  That's where spending quality time with your kids comes in.  The age limit should be reduced to 16, or the driver's license age raised to 17.  If your old enough to drive, your old enough to see an R-rated movie and buy an M-rated game.

No kidding.  I was talking to the manager of the local Software Etc, and she told me that a woman was there the other day buying Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for her eight year-old son.  When the manager tried to tell her that the game was not really appropriate for an eight year-old, the mother blew a gasket.

I was carded for SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs at Toys R Us, I was just light "Uhh, fine here"

Then I went to Electronics Boutique and bought Manhunt(which is by far, probably the most violent, gruesome game I've ever played) and didn't get carded at all. Manhunt is touted as a "Murder Simulator" by many reviewers.

Looks like another profit opportunity for older teens!

1950's:  "You want beer?  A case is $3.00.  Gimme a fiver and it's your's.

1970's:  You want porno?  Two mags are about $15.00.  Gimme a twenty and they're your's.

1990's:  You want cigs?  A carton is $25.00.  Gimme two twenties and it's your's."

2000:  "You want Grand Theft Auto 3......."

I also got carded at Walmart.  I bought a Scooby Doo cartoon on DVD for my daughter (2 years old) who loves Scooby.  Scanned the DVD and up went the flag - the cashier was even surprised!
