Well, it's not that I don't know the difference between the '60 Colt and the '58 Remington, but I'd swear his Colt's were some sort of cartridge conversion. It's just when I first saw that movie years back it stuck in my mind because I'm not sure there were any cartridge conversions available for the Colt as early as that movie is supposed to have taken place. I remember them appearing to be Richards Colts, which wouldn't have been available until '71, if memory serves.
Dangit now I'm going to have to find my copy of that movie. Oh well. As good an ecuse as any to watch it again I guess. [:D] Cpt. Redleg |

I'd rather have a solid-frame Remington, but there's just something about those enormous Dragoon revolvers that's hard to resist. |

the ONLY thing sucky about those is when you fire it,the loading lever will fall down as It has no retaining latch.

At the end, he uses two Walker Colt 44s. You can see the main difference in Walkers and Dragoons because Walkers have no catch at the end of the barrel for the tamping rod. He carried a number of pistols in the movie. Remember that he was supposed to be a raider. No time to reload so it was not uncommon for them to carry 4 saddle pistols. Walkers, Dragoons, 1860 Armys, etc. I can't remember which guns he carried when he smoked the two pilgims in the trading post.

Most of the movie was filmed with Eastwood using very light rubber reproductions. I got to handle one of the repros when the NRA Museum had their "Guns in the Movies" exhibition. I also got to handle one of the S&W M-29s used in filming "Dirty Harry".

He used a cartridge conversion in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". I remember a scene when he was in a hotel room with the pistol stripped for cleaning, had to reassemble and load as the BG burst thru his door.
There was another movie where he carried spare cartridge conversion loaded cylinders as speedloaders. |
