So, I'm sitting if a deer stand, cradling my CETME, and the thought pops into my head, I wonder what weapons other people have hunted with, that were not particularly suited to hunting?

I've known plenty of people to hunt with an SKS.

My uncle hunted for awhile with a .50AE Desert Eagle. He videotaped one hunt where he took a deer with it... it looked like the deer was hit by a freight train. He shot it in the chest and the bullet exited between the deer's hindquarters. I have never seen a deer drop that hard and still.

I've hunted deer with an M1A.

An old rem xp100 221 fireball with handloaded 55gr fmj's. Droped several whitetails including a 120 class 8pt. My favorite deep woods rig is a side folder ak in 7.62. Packs like a dream.

Treetop did you get'um mounted?? [:D]

I tried it too!
I saw Scott Case (former saftey for the Atlanta Falcons) kill a boar with a spear in Kings Mountain NC. So I had to try it, never could get a boar to charge me though.

So how did your hunt turn out?

1962 (My first year deer hunting) an Iver Johnson 410 single shot w/ punkin balls (slugs). Practiced all fall to reload for second shot.
Second year my dad bought a Remington 1903. Hunted w/ it 'stock' for two years and then 'sporterized' it. Still have it. Should have left it 'stock'.

I actually shot a Alaskan moose with a rist rocket sling shot. I shot a deer with it also. No confirmed kill on either one.[:(]
I hunted stripped gophers with a blowgun, ducks with a primative sling, fish with a .36 percushin cap pistol,& I spent about 5 hours one day trying to kill a chipmunk with a homemade blackpowder pistol, that shot 1 bb at a time. I must have taken about 40 shots, some as close as 3 feet with no success.

I do get a lot of comments about hunting Elk with a M1A in a fiberglass stock however.

Boar with a Cold Steel javelin spear. I figured that since I had stalked them close enough to reach down and slap some, that I could certainly spear a couple. Now that the rain has returned to FL, they are too shy to allow someone that close any more. Sheesh.

I did get a hog this spring with an Enfield .303 Gibbs carbine. Does that count?

I really can't wait to take my Schmidt-Rubin hunting. That thing is amazingly accurate and follow up shots would be very fast. I just wish that Norma hunting ammo wasn't so darned expensive. [rolleyes]

Edit: I almost forgot: I used to hunt almost exclusively with a Krag carbine. That is, until I found out about it's value and got a more suitable hunting rifle. (Doh!)

Deer, with a CJ5 cost big $$$, and local PD took my very costly kill like it was a big powderd donut!

Also took a "rat" at almost 7yrds with a "big rock"[ROFL2]

I've hunted deer with an AKM that I had and I had a T/C Contender in 7mm International Rim(30/30 necked to 7mm) that I used to hunt deer with. I don't know it the weapons were "strange" though. Just different from what the "normal" folks were using at the time.

How about a golf club with a hook welded on the end? I would pin a rattlesnake at the neck, so I could pick it up and place it in a sack. I also used a signal mirror to reflect sunlight into a den so I could get a look what was in there near the opening. The hook also enables me to drag it out of the den and into the open where I can more easily capture it.

Removing a snake from the den is best accomplished by having one guy manipulate the mirror while the other concentrates on capturing the snake. That may be important if there's a bunch of them in there buzzing like hornets.

I've also used a plain old stick in a similar fashion as the modified golf club.

I heard of someone that hunted white tails with a 10/22. From what i hear got 10 of them too. I also heard that not one of them escaped.

I once ,while fishing in a canal, knocked a
squirrel off of a tree branch with a sinker
while casting into the canal(quite unintentionally). It must have knocked him out,because he fell into the water and never came up.

Killed a mama mouse with a bunch of babies hanging off her teats using a steering column shaft out of an 82 Mustang that was propped in the corner.

They were nesting in the drawer where we keep power tools. Used the end of the shaft to squash her head flat, then used a shovel to dice the babies.

I have taken 3 hawgs with my CS Boar Spear, only one was a good boar hawg (200 lb), with the other two being sows. We use dawgs to run them down in the river swamps, and once they bay up I wade in with my spear. Once you gig the hawg [b]HANG ON!!![/b]. The boar like to have disclocated both my arms and shoulders when he went to thrashing around. Nothing but a pure adrendaline rush, cause if that hawg gets off that spear he's going to eat your ass up, before he bleeds out.

Not exactly a 'weapon', but ground squirrels with a flyfishing pole...

Stayed a weekend years back at a friend's cabin in northern Michigan and I was completely unaware his parents were wildly anti-gun... his mom wanted me to scare the ground squirrels away but was adamant I couldn't shoot them so I took my fly rod, rigged up a slip knot/noose on the end of the line, and parked my butt in a lawn chair.

When the little beasties would stick their heads out of their holes I'd flip the fly rod and have a ground squirrel giving its best imitation of a grass trout... It was just about the funniest damn thing I ever saw... I finished them off with a stick, reset the noose around the next hole and waited for the next strike... at the end of the weekend his mom thanked me for scaring the ground squirrels away and not hurting them... ended up with 14 that weekend...

Little bastards ate my cantaloupe!!!! One bite out of 8 different cantaloupes!!!
Ran the little bastards down on foot- whacking them as I went... whack em and stack em. I'm sure it was vastly entertaining if anyone was watching.

I once killed a red squirrel with a bull whip on the side of a pine tree.

I used to hunt stickel back minnows with my daisy bb gun. & lots of water boatmen. I also hunted dragonflies with it as well.

3 friends & I rented a house in rural Wi when I graduated from highschool. The adjoining cow pasture belonged to my girlfriends parents, & it was full of stripped gophers. We spent the next 2 years hunting them with .30-06,.22-250,.44mag,.50 Hawken, .22, 12 ga, AR-15's, bow & arrows, & anything else we could find. No gophers there anymore.

Wasn't really hunting but a buddy of mine told me about shooting a water buffalo with a m79 in Korea in the late '70's when he was patrolling the DMZ. They had to buy the farmer a new one.

I once "hunted" baby birds using a salad fork taped to the end of a broom handle. A "bird gig", if you will...

I was living in post housing at Ft. Riley, KS and these damned sparrows were nesting under the eaves of my place and $h!tting all over my patio & BBQ grill.

I could see the baby birds sticking their heads out from the nests(about 4 or 5 different nests). It took me all of 15 seconds to realize that I had the items at hand to fashion a very efficient weapon for the job at hand. I took an old salad fork and used some 100-mph tape to attach it to the end of a broomstick that I had.

I was "hunting" 5 minutes later...a baby bird would stick it's head out of it's nest and "WHAP!", I'd gig it through the noggin and drop it into a bucket that I had sitting just outside the patio door. When I'd get 3 or 4 birds in the bucket, I'd take them inside & give them a "burial at sea" by flushing them down the toilet. It didn't take too long to take care of the problem...heh heh heh...[headbang]
