You can't buy a new Hustler in the state. At least not around Camp Lejeune. MAybe it's just an Onslow County thing.
We had cable and high speed modem on base. Some of my fellow corpsman had satellite TV off base no prob. I'd say avoid the coastal(read that near Lejeune) area. Waaay to humid and muggy. And wear a helmet if you decide to resettle in the area. I kept hitting my head on the shallow end of the gene pool. |

I lived in Hendersonville, NC (just south of Asheville) for a couple of years finishing up grad school. Really nice area. I personally wouldn't consider living east of I-77.
You may want to consider the Tryon area. It sits right on the NC/SC state line. You'r 1/2 hour from Spartanburg, SC and 45 minutes from Asheville and Greenville, SC. The Charlotte area is too sprawling. Being able to shoot in your backyard may require a bit of a drive out of town. Only really bad thing with NC is that you need a permit from the county sheriff to purcahse handguns. In most of the western counties, not an issue, btu in the more urbanized areas can be a hassle (from what I've been told by others). Don't fear the "bible belt" thing. I didn't think it was a big issue (then again I am into that sort of stuff). Most folks keep to themselves and you will most likely never have a confrontation with anyone. No ones gonna bring pit vipers to your door and expect you to handle them to show your devotion, if thats the sort of thing your worried about. Make the move...I really think you'll like it there. |

You want the Charlotte, Raleigh, Greenville, Columbia or Charleston areas of the Carolinas. Forget Ft. Bragg area. Asheville would be cool, but very mountainous. No problem with HS internet. I have satelite, no restrictions. The bible belt thing is overblown. SC is definately class 3. NC has restrictions on handgun purchases. I think the cops must give an OK for you to buy one. SC has no such restrictions, but it's a 1 handgun a month state. If you want to come up, you can stay with us & we can tour Charlotte, greenville (Both 1.5 hrs) Charleston, (2 hrs), Myrtle beach (2 hrs). The only thing I had a problem with was blue laws. No beer sales on Sunday, stores not open until 1:30. Those have eased over time as counties opt out. I'll be out of town this week, but will happily answer any questions when I get back. You might want to consider middle Tennessee. It has everything you described plus there is no state income tax. Although we do have a rather high sales tax. It's a good area.

A native here....personally I think it is a great state though some areas have definitely been affected by the large of influx of folks of the northern persuasion lately.
To answer your questions: 1. NC is "iffy" as to Class 3. People have them, but the law is open to a lot of interpretation and is really dependent on the County you live in. Forget owning Class 3 in areas such as Raleigh or Durham...don't know about Charlotte. Generally the state is "gun friendly", but I've seen this change over my lifetime...again, not to cast aspirtions at folks, but a lot has to do with the rapid influx of folks from urbanized areas up north who didn't grow up in the southern gun culture. 2. Cost of living...depends on where you live...but probably on par with Florida. 3. Gentleman's Club...again, this is a county issue. Locate in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro or Winston-Salem and this isn't a problem. Maybe you can't buy Hustler new Camp Lejune, but it sure is available everywhere I go in the state. No censorship of internet, cable, etc...it's all there. By the way, in NC that means topless....all nude not allowed. 4. Building your own range...sure, as long as you are in the country and not near the city. NC does have a rule about not discharging a firearm within 1000 ft of a house without owners permission, so you need to consider that. 5. We do have ccw. 6. To purchase a handgun, you must first get a permit to purchase from the local sheriff. The process varies by county, but as a general rule you can purchase 5 permits per trip to the sheriff and they are good for 5 years. I usually purchase 5 at a time just to have some on hand in case of a good deal. No limit on number of purchases in a month. No handgun registration, just the permit to purchase is necessary. In Wake County each permit costs $5.00 and takes 1 week for background check. There was a bill introduced in the legislature last year to allow the ccw permit to substitute for the purchase permit, but it didn't pass. 7. The law does allow for the ccw permit to substitute for the NICS check when purchasing firearms. 8. No blue laws in NC. Beer/wine purchase ok on Sunday after 12:00. Some counties in the western part of the state are still dry counties. |

Should be pretty big and still have a low cost of living due to the large military presence. Anyway here is what I'm looking for. 1. Is North Carolina a class 3 state? I think it is but I'm not positiive. 2. Would want to be able to buy a house where I could do a range in the backyard, so not in town. 3. Would have to have decent restraunts, movie theaters, etc. in reaonable proximity. 4. Would have to be afforable in terms of cost of living but with jobs available. My wife is a commerical property manager so there would have to be commercial properties to manage. 1. 99% sure it is. 2. Gray's Creek or East Over....outside the city off 95. Good deals on houses and property. Find the right place and shoot 'till your heart's content. 3. This city is nothing but restaurants, pawn shops and titty bars. There are decent places to eat and theaters that are okay. A damn good Micro Brew and restaurant...The Mash House. Friday is $2.00 porter night, see you there. 4. Plenty of commecial property...I think Riddle commercial properties is the largest. And I'm sorta worried about the Bible Belt thing. Is satellite TV and internet 'restricted access'? May sound crazy but I could have sworn I heard "you can't get them channels here." Don't worry about the bible belt. NC has plenty of heathens to balance things out. The only restricted access I know of is when the satellite companies burn up you boot legged card. If you are willing to pay for it, you can get anything you want from DirecTV, StarBand...what ever...Time Warner here has all the bells and wistles as any where else. Technologically, we are only missing fiber to the home. As for resricted access to the internet...i have no idea what you could be talking about. For $45.00 a month I have Road Runner...I just tested it at 2.2 megabits per second on a download. Also I would like at least ONE decent gentlemens club for rate occassions. Not a 'strip joint' in a barn somewhere but something upscale. Ok, does it exist? You'll be driving to Raleigh or Wilmington for that. I grew up in Fayetteville and moved back about 2 yrs. ago for family reasons. Personally, I think it is an OK place to live. It isn't your typical southern city due to the military's influence. I will likely move in a year or so and I'm looking at the Winston Salem area...in the foot hills. Hope this helps. IM me if you have any more questions. Camp Lejeune and that area was a gret pace to live, not too large with around 100-150 thousnd people so you could get about everything you wanted in J'Ville or down at Williamton. But guns cost allot there, even on base. Don't know where my Marines got their porn from but they had allot of it. There were allot of adult reading material shops right outside of town, I think J'Ville did a mass clean up because from the last time I was statuioned there the "adult entertainment facilities" either go away or stsrt looking higher class.

Just stay away from Northern Virginia the traffic and cost of living may be higher than you care for. As far as culture goes make coming into DC and the surrounding area a daytrip and enjoy all the good eats, strip clubs, beautiful towns, etc, you could ask for. You will have to shop around for back yard shooting but it can be done as long as you don't mind driving upwards of two hours each way to get to work. We are very class 3 friendly and have ranges available along with gun clubs to satisfy all your needs and desires. Beautiful seasons abound and the people are fairly friendly. I have made the most wonderfull friends ever and plan on living here the rest of my life. Could not be happier! |

My family lives in NC. I tried to. Lasted 2 years before the stupidity got to me.
Not to say it doesn't have it's good points. But you'd better make sure that you visit and extensively check out the area you want to move to. Summers can be brutally hot and humid. Winters are usually mild with an occasional blizzard for entertainment value. The Bible Belt thing is a joke. Do you think someone would still name it the Bible Belt when you have Drive Thru Nude Car Washes? The drinking laws are draconian, (think Utah). You should have seen my face the first time I realized there weren't any real bars. Ironically, I'd move to Virginia in a second if I had to live on the East Coast again. I swear there is at least a 50 point increase in the IQ when you cross the border. |

I'd vote VA over NC. Seems like most everyone in NC is from FL.
I for one, plan on staying in FL. It may not be a beautiful & romantic countryside but the gun laws are good. Steyer, why don't you just move to N. FL? Levy County is great, low taxes Gilcrest County is good, ALachua county is nice but they are getting like Kali with all the taxes. N. FL is not tropical like S. FL. Ocala, Lake City, are good places to live. Hernando has become the Knob Creek of the south. You just need to get out of South FL. Come up stay the weekend and shoot with the FDCC, we'll show you around. Added: If you are going to make a major move, then check your BATF red book. Wyoming and Montana get my vote, look up their gun laws and you'll see why. |

Looks like CS223 beat me to it, but have you considered North Florida? All the same gun laws (or lack of) you know and love, still no state income tax and low sales tax. Not too many liberals/dirty hippies as long as you don't get too close to UF (and even there, there aren't as many liberals as you might think).
We have some nice ranges too. I've been to Lake City with FDCC, and it's pretty nice. Two 50yd ranges and a 300yd, and usually no ROs. They shoot FA there all the time. There's another one reportedly like this in Ocala, but I haven't been there. There's also the new Gainesville Target Range. They're clean, but they have steep membership fees and reportedly lots of rules and ROs. The weather is a little cooler then South Florida, but not too much. I live in Gainesville, so I might be a little biased towards that as a location, but you could buy land outside the city, possibly just outside Alachua county (I hear Alachua property taxes are getting pretty high), and still have a relatively short drive to Gainesville, which has a decent mall, lots of restaurants, and three big movie theaters. Jacksonville and Ocala are also reasonably close too, but I don't know much about them. |

Moved from Jupiter to Greensboro in April of 2001. Wouldn't consider moving back if you paid me. If you're from SOFLO you'll be amazed at how many drivers use their turn signals. There are 3 places to shoot service rifle within 1.5 hour drive. Other ranges are around, but haven't tried them yet. Anything you do here in a group of people involves FOOD.

If you can get something just outside Raleigh Personal Defense is a good indoor(pistol calibers only range) and they allow full auto. They even rent them. Raleigh has Thee Doll House and Pure Gold. Fine dining abounds in the triangle area. Outback is not fine dining, but we have a few. Angus Barn is better.

NC is beautiful. I moved to Raleigh 13 years ago after Arkansas and Texas. Then to Charlotte 11 years ago.
Living in Charlotte means a 1 hour drive to a public range (which is actually in S.C.) but the one I go to is unsupervised and the only rule is "No Tannerite". just kidding about that last part. I love it here, even though the Yankees are coming in droves. Oh well, they're free entertainment! Ever watch a yankee try to decipher the suth'rn drawl? Priceless. |

NC Gun Laws:
1) As was already mentioned several times, the handgun purchase permit from the sheriff's office is kind of a PITA. 2) NOT one-gun-a-month (unlike VA). That is good. 3) CCW permit is NOT good for any venue with paid admission and that includes movie theaters. Alcohol sales until 2am, same time the bars close. In VA, the bars are also open until 2 but take-home (grocery store, conveience store, etc.) alcohol sales end at midnight. 70 mph speed limit on rural interstates BUT over 80 (even in a 70 zone) is automatically Reckless Driving. Same holds true in VA but we only get a max 65 mph limit. Avoid Chapel Hill. This is where the main UNC campus is located and it's FILLED with HEAVY liberal sentiment. It's right near Durham and maybe ~20 miles from Raleigh. If you despise leftish political philosophy, and I'm guessing you do, STAY AWAY. One thing rarely mentioned about VA that is fucking terrible, IMNSHO: The use of a radar or laser detector is ILLEGAL. The only other place in our Great Nation where this also holds true is Washington, DC. Connecticut also had a similar law but repealed it a few years back. That being said, the penalty for breaking this law is only ~$75, no confiscation, points, or insurance penalties. If you use a VG2-proof model such as the Valentine One or Escort Passport 8500, they will need to visually see it in use for you to get pulled over. |

I've been here 13 years, and I like it here. I'm in the eastern part of the state, between Raligh and Greenville.
I'm married with kids, so the gentleman's clubs aren't an issue for me. Life is a tad more laid back out here, and that's cool with me. I travel a bunch for work, so I get enough of big cities that way. The people are very friendly. (at least the ones that aren't the Yankee imports). I moved from the Shenandoah Valley area of Northern VA. If I could, I would move back there in an NC minute! Very beautiful area. |

I should bring you down to talk to my wife! She seems to think I'm the only human being on planet Earth who doesn't think Miami is the Garden of Eden, and Miami is WORSE than Fort Lauderdale! I'm outta here, too, just as soon as I find a good place with a good job. Four-Corners area for me, although NC and VA are the next best thing. |

North Florida is where you oughta look. Tallahsassee, Gainesville, outskirts of Jax, etc. Your wife should have no problem finding jobs there. I grew up in Tallahassee, and once I'm into settling down mode I will go back there. Right now Lauderdale is just too much damn fun. |

Western NC has more waterfalls than any place else in this country. Also the highest point east of the Mississippi. Its pretty nice place. I live in Asheville. Theres a whole lot of hippies, but they don't bug anybody. I grew up in Buffalo New York. I've lived here for over 2 years. I also lived in florida for a year after I was in the service. I have a girlfirend who I picked up in Florida, so I don't feel like I'm missing much women wise anymore. I do miss the beach some times, but I'd rather live in the mountains any day. I like my space. I don't think I'll be staying in Asheville, bot I doubt Ill ever leave the Smokies.
Also: The handgun permit thing actually works out good. You can get 5 at a time. Then when you go to pick up a pistol, there is no wait. The wait is 3-5 days to get the permits. They are $5.00 a piece. And you can get 5 more the next day If you like. I think its a better system than some states. The only bad side is there is a record kept somewhere. If you ever decide you wanna come check it out, let me know, I'd be happy to do some shooting, and show you around a bit. |

THere are A LOT of nice spots around there to live and be able to go shooting. I'll link through to a real estate agency that deals in that area (just a start, their prices are a bit high, but like I said it will give you a start). I went to Furman, a small college in Greenville. Absolutely loved living there (would move back if I could get a job there). Weather is awsome (all four seasons). The crime rate is relatively low, and I think its the most conservative part of the state. There is a lot of development due to I-85 and Charlotte and Atlanta growing towards one another. There are lots of awsome restaurants in both cities (G-ville and S-burg). In fact, I love Indiana food. I've been to around 20 or so different ones in my life. Bay far the best one (ever and on a consistant basis) is the Indian Palace in Greenville. There is a really good mix of transplants and natives. Its not like Raleight/Durham where everyone is from eithey Kali or NJ. Yet, there are enough transplants that you don't feel liek a freak not talking with a southern draw. Close to the mountain and not a far drive to the beach (for those weekend retreats). Not many good gun shops (I usually went to Luthi's pawn, btu not the best prices and selection was sparce). They used to have some decent gun shows at the Palmetto Expo center in G-ville (still may, since I moved I can't say for sure). I wish I shared your position to move back there... |

This is kind of timely for me. The wife and I are getting kind of tired of Michigan weather (no we're not retirees ; ) ) as well as a few other factors (family type stuff).
My inlaws go to Myrtle Beach 6 months out of the year anymore, and when we go visit them we drive through Raleigh/Durham and Asheville (not necessarily in that order)... I've given serious thought to moving there! Of course, I can't get the motivation required to move inside the state ... let alone 800 miles away ; ) I'm going to show this to the wife tonight. Maybe this will motivate us to look around again. jim p.s. what kind of natural disasters would one expect in NC, in the Raleigh/Durham area? Pardon my ignorance, but do hurricanes reach that far inland? Flooding? Tornadoes? We get tornadoes in Michigan, and am trying to avoid areas that wouldn't be strategically sound for things like floods (I couldn't live in Myrtle Beach for that reason and the heat I hear they get in the summer)... *sigh* maybe I'm too picky ; ) |

Natural disasters? Hurricanes have hit as far inland as Charlotte before. Fran devistated most of the central and eastern part of the state. Not as bad as Andrew did FL, but we got these things called hills. 22 inches of snow count as a blizzard? I suggest Charleston SC. Small city on the coast, friendly people, and great weather. I should also mention that the the College of Charleston is ~70% female so there are plenty of women running around downtown.

tennessee or kentucky is where'd i'd go if i was ever to move south again. easy enough to find a house outside of a "major" city that you can make a range in your backyard. the eastern sides of the state are supposed to be pretty nice, although i lived in the western sides of both. in kentucky my wife and i tried to order some stuff from an adult store online.(adam & eve i think) they wouldn't ship to us. said they can't ship to kentucky. we lived in a dry county which sucked!!! but were able to drive to the next county over and get some drinks.

Screw NC. I'd go to upstate SC or eastern TN. Better taxes. Better gun laws. SC is now Class 3. They changed the law. There aren't any public shooting ranges in Western NC- at least west of US 221. CRC |

For some reason ATF is very active here. Their recommendation for prosecution is in the top 5 for the nation and jail time is more than double the national average at 112 months.
We have had 3 state income tax increases in 3 years and the state dropped a score on its credit rating because of the huge deficit. Instead of controlling spending they keep looking for new things to tax or areas to raise taxes. We already lead the SE in taxes I believe. Being short of cash because we have a HUGE number of state employees is causing the gubment to do things like put up red light cameras with $50 fines. They are popping up all over Raleigh. They even tax people they catch with illegal drugs by the weight! An ounce of pot has one rate and cocaine another etc. I even heard an ad on the radio the other day for the new "State radio" station. Reminds me of the Soviet Union. Tax payers paid to have a new public range built in Wake County (Raleigh) about 5 years ago. By the time it was ready the county gubment said "Sorry, police only". When there was outcry they agreed to open it to the public about twice a week. The hours are like thursday during the daytime and Saturday afternoon only. This may have changed I don't know because its so far out of town almost nobody goes there anyway. I hear good things about Tennessee and think Kentucky is awesome. Wyoming for me please. |

Stay more toward Greenville, if the Greenville/Spartanburg area may be to your liking. There are NO, I say again, [b]NO[/b] ranges in or close to Spartanburg. Other than that, Spartanburg pretty much meets all the criteria you specified. As for buying a chunk of land, it's cheaper in the outlying areas, but since the area is building up so fast commercially, your wife should be able to find work. Greenville would be the better choice between the two, however.

Another vote for Kaintuck, if you aim to leave FL, although I do miss NC. I used to live in Eastern NC between Raleigh and Greenville, and I loved it. 3 hours to the mountains, 2.5 +/- to the Outer Banks.
Gun laws not the greatest, and stay out of Raleigh and particularly Chapel Hill. Came home to KY 9 years ago, and it will always be home. Rolling hills, lakes, rivers, we've got it all. Not to many damn Yankees (no offense to our arfcom brothers who happen to live in the North, this doesn't apply to you). Michael |

How about North Alabama? - Great Class 3 state (ask MGTony!) - 3-4 ranges right around where I live in Madison; guns are so prevalent that the cops don't even bother asking if you have any guns. - Great schools in Madison (although Madison Co. schools suck as do most Huntsville schools) - Low taxes - Still some great rural places to live and hunt around here. - Madison is a great place for children; we got more baseball, soccer, football stuff for kids it would kill you. - Alabama is still part of America and it shows - Larry's Pistol and Pawn could use some competition Downsides: - Hot summers, but not as hot as S. FL - There are only 2 good resturants in Huntsville; one's in Nashville, TN and the other is in Birmingham* - No near naked womenz running around Think about it. * This is a joke; we have the usual good chain resturants, but not any of the really good ones (Tony Roma's, Ruth's Chris, etc.) Thanks, Merlin |

As a NC native and Wake Co. native I would have 10-15 years ago highly recommended this area to anyone looking to get away. But since the mid 90's (thanks to Money magazine posting that Raleigh being the #1 place to live, 2 years in a row) this area has been invaded by "outsiders" seeking a lower cost of living, better schools, etc. Not to mention the Hispanic boom as well. (But that's another story) I have a friend from Mass. that just moved down last winter and he says it's no cheaper here than it was there.
It's a daily battle with traffic to and from work everyday and even running an errand on a lunch break is damn near impossible. There are more strip malls, subdivisions, and town homes being built than ever before. I would bet the one the fastest rates on the east coast. Not only that, but 2 major highways under construction right through the heart of Raleigh to add to the confusion. If you are looking for a quit laid-back place to settle the "Triangle" area is not it. Thank God I live on enough land where I can do a little hunting and shooting or else I would make a move myself. |

I considered NC, myself. My conclusion is that, except for the extreme western part, it is New Jersey South. Between the laws, taxes and crowds, it wasn't on my short list. We would have wanted to be near the coastal area, and a couple of visits supports many of the conclusions stated in earleir posts on this thread. The taxes are no prize. Look at ALL the taxes before thinking it's ok. You would be surprised at the states which are lower in TOTAL tax than NC.
Too many crowds, and you'll find in the built-up parts of the state too many unpleasant types who have moved in. Sort of like the East coast of FL. Notice my location. I'm on the West coast, and would like to move out of Pinellas County. Talk about crowds. Anyway, we ruled it out. Of course my wife is enamored with California. I've done that research and see the problems and, though it's pretty, I hate it. Our evaluation of places ought to be interesting. My solution may be Texas, though. Depends on how the trip plays out. As far as you question, though, think carefully about NC. It's not as great as it was about 15 years ago. A friend of mine had some property there - around Raleigh, I think - and sold it around 1992. |
