Why would a rear end lock up?

Not enough fiber in your diet.

Or more likely, contaminated or low gear oil.

Eating too much cheese or if you are on codiene painkillers.

When was the last time you checked fluid level?

I've heard of draining someone's rear end and filling it with gasoline to ruin it in short order.  Bad news.

That is a tip for Soul Chicken if his neighbor ends up with a car instead of a motorbike or snowmachine...

What kind of vehicle? I have a 2003 F150 4x4 and the rear end blew up at 7,000 miles. I was going down the freeway when it happened. It even through pieces of gear through the inspection cover. When I got it pulled off the road it locked up. Actually skidded to a stop. We had to drag it onto a flatbed in order to move it. Thankfully it was under warranty.

Your gonna have to pull the cover to see what the actual cause is but most likely its toast. Had an Dodge 9-1/4 rear lock up on me when the pinion gear broke and locked the ring gear by getting jammed agianst the side of the case. If it was growling before hand its most likely that a pinion bearing or similar went bad and as the backlash got worse and worse the gears made noise, you could pull the driveshaft off at the rear u-joint to the diff and see if the pinion has any movement to it. Once something like that grenades though little metal peices get all throughout the case and a complete rebuild is the only option. Good time to do an upgrade if you were considering it like a ford 9" or somthing.  Otherwise go to the junkyard pull an complete axle from a similar make/model/gear ratio and swap it in.

Before giving up and spending a lot of money, I'd suggest opening up the defferential and taking a look.

I once had one that was making a bad noise and found a small chip in a gear that had lodged between two teeth in the drive gear.  I removed it, put in new oil, and put another 50,000 miles on it.

It's a cheap job to take a look.  Good luck.
