I know for SHTF you need a shotgun but I got kids in the house and think it would be easier to get one of the small safes for a handgun to keep by the bed.  
I already got a big safe so don't give me shit.  
Also, my carry gun is always in my pants on the floor but it is only a .32.

I have the Deluxe Gun Vault bolted into my bedside table. I really like it. It has two shelves so I can stash some money, passports or extra guns in it. I also like the touch pad, the fact that you can choose how many sequences you want in it, and I also have it plugged into the wall so the batteries don't matter. It is a pain in the ass finding the right power adaptor, though. I eventually had to just walk into Radio Shack with the whole damn safe with both the guys asking "what in the hell is that thing?" I got it from Wholesalehunter.com for a really good price. IM me if you have any other questions.

Sorry about the "washed-out" lighting in some of these - some of them were too dark and I had to lighten them on the computer.  Please keep in mind this is just to get me or my wife 7 feet down the hall to the gun room.  We used to each have a dedicated pistol/rifle/shotgun battery on our respective sides of the bed, but now we have a baby, not to mention several young nieces & nephews who visit from time to time, so we can't just leave them lying about like we used to.  That notwithstanding, I had to have SOMETHING in the bedroom with us, and this fit the bill for me...

I really like the mossberg instant access handgun safe.

It takes 2 9v batteries, 1 on the inside, and one accessable from outside.

It has a 10 key, with a 4 digit code.

It is quiet (very low beeps) when you enter the code.  If someone has been tampering with it, (trying to enter codes to open it) the next time you open it, the beeps are louder, to let you know it was tampered with.

It also has a low level battery warning beep similar to a quiet fire alarm.

Mountable, and somewhat heavy.

GOOGLE it, and you'll see.

Whatever you choose, if you have kids, GET SOMETHING!

I got a small one from galyans. It is a bit tall to fit under the bed, so it sits next to the night stand. 40 bucks as I recall. Push button type, that is mountable. Sturdier and cheaper than the safes made for guns. It is a little shallow for my pt-100, so I have to slant the gun a bit, but it fits. 2 shelfs, so the gun on top extra mags on the bottom.

I have a mini gunvault bolted to the floor under the bed. The thing is great. You can set the touch pad combination to as simple or complex as you want. You can turn off the keypad beeping. Check it out.

I have a gun vault with a little Smith and Wesson 686 4" revolver sitting in it. I have no kids to worry about [:)] but worry about someone stealing the firearm. Still it's just screwed into the drawer. I suppose you could just slide out the drawer and take it home to work on in your spare time [:(]. It's got a series of five mechanical pushbuttons that you whack to get the thing to open - I got it free from Beretta when I bought a 96FS on sale a few years ago.

Ideally I wanted to put a tall enough in-the-wall safe to fit my 12 gauge pump in the wall of the closet.

All three pistols in the door are Berettas (commonality of magazines/ammo).  The top two are former PD guns completely finished in Robar NP3 (great finish!), both with Tritium 3-dot sights, Crimson Trace Lasergrips, and Streamlight M3s.  The bottom one (for storage/backup only) is my fathers US Army M9 General Officer's issue sidearm (serial # GO 000XXX).  When he retired I insisted that he exercise the option to purchase it - he's not really a "gun guy," so he subsequently gave it to me.  One of these days I want to mount it under glass in a wall case with his dress belt & holster, etc.

I and some friends did a little "group buy" of these some time ago. Everybody who bought one thinks it is excellent.

Hardshell, that is one good looking Beretta. I am very relieved to hear you like the NP3. My first Kimber(just a stock Custom II) is in a box in the other room to be shipped off to Robar today for total NP3 treatment. I have heard great things about it. I was a little woried about the color, but I am more worried about the fact that a brand new Kimber had rust on it out of the box (not much though). Robar is having a special right now: 20% off any metal finishing if they recieve the gun by November 30th.

One more note about the GunVault: It has a setting where if the safe is moved, it will start making a VERY loud and irritating alarm sound, enough so that a burglar probably would leave your house or at least leave the safe where it is. I activate the feature on mine every time I open it up.

Another vote for Gunvault here.  Probably be buying one for ther trunk of my car when ccw passes in Wisconsin.

Another vote for the GunVault.  You can bolt it down, but it was too big to fit in my nightstand, so I used the optional steel cable to attach it to my bedframe.  Anyone with a decent cutter could walk away with it, but it's enough of a deterrent that I think it's pretty safe.  The batteries last forever if you don't open it up every day - I've had the same set in there for close to four years.  

It looks like a matte stainless & gives the frame-to-slide a "slick" feel (without play) like nothing else I've felt.  Plus SUPER corrosion-resistant - I think you'll really like it on your Kimber.  I keep intending to have Robar refinish some of my other guns, but them I find another one I just HAVE to buy, etc. - you know the drill... [:D]
