The USP .45 and the Sig...that Sig looks rugged and nasty..like it.
|

Alot depends on what kind of budget I'd have. I don't think I'd have two rifles(Assualt/Battle) I'd try to stick with one that would be good for both jobs. I'd say one of the newer AK varients, AK-101, something like that. I like the AK system and the newer systems are much more accurate then they use to be. As far as handguns, it'd have to be made by Sig, something on the order of the 226 or 228(M-11) would work nice. For sub gun you can't beat the MP-5 so we agree on that one. Light and Heavy Machine guns, I don't really know, I've got zero expirence with them. Sniper rifle would be something by Styer, maybe the PPS, and Aux. sniper would be a Barrett light 50. That's my picks for what it's worth.

1. Probably the Steyr Aug. I think the miliary likes the shorter firearms.
2. G3, only other choice is FAL. 3. Glock 21, HK tactical is nice but probably a little too pricey for a issued firearm, it's also a little bigger I think and some people have a hard time gripping the G-21. 4. HK ump 45., I always choose .45 over 9mm. 5. M249 SAW. I like it, I like it alot. 6. Don't really have an opinion. 7. M24 is their current choice and it works really well. 8. PSG1 is a good choice, but I would go with a 5.56 precision rifle. Something like a HBAR with a good scope. Something they could issue to one member of every squad. |

Another vote for the sig 550. I am now wiping drool off the keyboard after gazing upon the sig.
|
|
No M16s, because as everyone here on AR15.com knows, they sucks and have for the entire almost 40 year period they've been in use.

|
1. M-16A3
2. G-3A4 3. Kimber Custom TLE II 4. MP5/10/40. 5. M249 SAW 6. M240 or M60 7. Either M24 in .300 Win Mag, or a modded Win. 70 in .300 Win Mag 8. AR-10 |
|
I would probably choose everything on Steyr's list, minus the PSG-1. I would probably replace that with an MSG-90A1. The MSGs are a bit lighter, and I'm speculating here, but probably a bit cheaper too.
|
|
Actually a M16 variant would probably be my second choice. I just don't think they are as good as a SIG. |
|
|
I 'almost' went with the MSG90, but if a semi auto is gonna try and play second fiddle to a bolt, the guy behind it is gonna want all the accuracy he can squeeze out if it. |

Very true, but the purpose of a designated marksman's rifle is not to compete or replace a dedicate bolt-action precision rifle. Instead, DMR's serve the purpose of providing accurate, rapid fire to frontline squads/platoons. This would seem to add validity to your point, because a designated marksman will not have the same intense training of a dedicated sniper, therefore making it necessary to give the DM the best rifle possible, but then you have to consider the DM needs to be able to keep pace with his squad/platoon counter-parts. Perhaps a four pound difference isn't that much for some, and I don't have the experience to argue the point, but I would think that even four pounds would be a welcomed relief. Or one could always carry four pounds worth of extra ammunition, because no one can ever have enough ammunition. |

1. Basic Infantry Assualt Rifle - Must be .223 and select fire.
M4A1&M16A4 with full-auto, comes standard with FF RAS. Mk262 Mod1 standard issue. 2. Basic Infantry Battle Rifle - Must be .308 and select fire. G3 for reliability. AR10 has better potential for modularity though. 3. Basic Infantry Handgun - Must be .45 or 9mm and semi automatic. Toss between Glock 17&21, Sig 226, and any reliable 1911s. 4. Basic Infanty Submachine Gun - Must be .45 or 9mm and select fire. I think shortened M4A1 can do only better with 77gr ammo. 5. Basic Infantry Light Machine Gun - Must be .223 and select fire. M249 with better parts 6. Basic Infantry Heavy Machine Gun - Must be .308 and select fire. M240 or M60E4 7. Basic Infantry Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 or .300 WM and bolt action. M24 or M40A3 8. Basic Infantry Auxillary Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 and semi auto. SR25 Match |

Could I ask why you chose the Stoner 63? I hear it is an awesome concept and was used to great effect in Vietnam by Navy SEALs, but isn't the system a bit finicky for a frontline unit? Just curious, I'd greatly appreciate an answer if you could. Thanks. |

Nostaglia. I could have easily written in the M249, being that the M249 was partially inspired by the 63a, but I figured I would be different. Supposedly, with great care the 63a was a more potent weapon system than the current M249. I care for my weapons properly and would want the 63a. Just a choice....the M60 was supposedly picky too, but there are many M60 gunners who will swear by them to their grave 40 years from now. |

Why am I not shocked by the number of HK's in Steyr's list?
Mine: 1. Basic Infantry Assualt Rifle - Must be .223 and select fire. AR-based carbine, 16.5", mid-length gas system, 1:8-twist, 4150 steel, chrome-lined, mid-weight (.700" or so), mid-length URX, flattop, Safe-Semi-Auto trigger, collapsable stock (M93 preferred). Mk262-class ammo. The SIG 55x series is nice, but no plastic mags, and they don't have the ability to mount the accessories (lights, lasers, NV, etc.) that give us a huge edge in battle today. That's true for most of the alternatives, since few countries can afford these accessories for their troops. 2. Basic Infantry Battle Rifle - Must be .308 and select fire. 18" AR10, FF RAS or URX, similar to #1 in specs. Second choice would be 18" FAL with a modern flash suppressor. 3. Basic Infantry Handgun - Must be .45 or 9mm and semi automatic. As much as I like .45 FMJ over 9mm FMJ, 9mm is here to stay as a general-issue handgun. Therefore, Glock 17 with Trijicon nightsights. Spec-Ops would get the UPS Tactical, but it wouldn't be general issue, for many reasons. 4. Basic Infanty Submachine Gun - Must be .45 or 9mm and select fire. 40+ years have not improved significantly on the MP5, though it certainly could be improved in a few areas. The NFA largely ended the possiblity of a domestically-developed "better design." 5. Basic Infantry Light Machine Gun - Must be .223 and select fire. M249. Duh. 16" and 20" barrels. M855 for these (it actually makes some sense to use M855 in the SAW). 6. Basic Infantry Heavy Machine Gun - Must be .308 and select fire. M240. Also duh. 7. Basic Infantry Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 or .300 WM and bolt action. FN SPR. They're better than the Rem 700 (which I own). Controlled-feed is ideal for a field gun. Otherwise, The Rock by GA Precision. 8. Basic Infantry Auxillary Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 and semi auto. I don't see a huge need for this, but I'd go with a 20-22" accurized, FF, AR10. The performance you want at a third of the cost of the HK entries, and consistant with other issue (i.e., AR-pattern) rifles. -Troy |

Even though I would love to outfit a speciality weapon for every person in every unit it is not going to happen. It would be a logistical nightmare to outfit and maintain a wide range of speciality weapons to a unit. What I would change is the way weapons are distributed. When you join you get a m4 and a glock issued and it follows you through out your career. When you move to different positions you get the add ons put on and off. So only things like m203s get added and redistributed as you move around. I got a new out of the box M16a2 that had a refurbished lower from a A1 on it. Quoted: As for the 55x series, I think it would be easy to adapt them to NATO mags and make a rail system / handguards. However in their current design you still can hang some crap on them. View Quote Well, that particular pic doesn't impress me much. [LOL] But to be honest with you, the 55x series would be my choice if ARs weren't available. Note that I would not even consider the G-36 or XM-8 designs as they currently stand. All that's left is a bunch of bullpups, and of those, I'd have to *guess* that, given the ability to evaluate them, I'd probably choose the Tavor over the AUG, FN2000 and the others. This is after firing the AUG, handling the SA80, and just seeing pics of the Tavor and FN2000, though. The "modern" AKs and ANs don't do much for me. Sorry, CampyBob. -Troy |

1. Basic Infantry Assualt Rifle - Must be .223 and select fire.:
M16 based. 18", 4150, chrome lined, gov't profile barrel. KAC URX with fixed front sight. Flattop with either the LMT BUIS or with the ARMS #40 for those who employ the ACOG or other optic where close eye relief is a factor. Battlegrip. Magpul receiver extension for modularity (stock would be unit/mission/assignment changeable). Select fire (full auto capability only if additional training will be employed, otherwise retaining the three round burst). 2. Basic Infantry Battle Rifle - Must be .308 and select fire.: AR10 (to save on time needed to train personnel on an additonal weaponas feel and function is simolar to M16). 20" 4150 chrome lined barrel also with URX and fixed front sight. Similar rear sight systems as on the M16 mentioned above. A magpul developed stock as well would be employed to save on time needed for personnel to become accustomed to a different weapon. 3. Basic Infantry Handgun - Must be .45 or 9mm and semi automatic.: for 9mm: SIG P226. For .45: Updated 1911 (probably whatever will become the new MEUSOC pistol). 4. Basic Infanty Submachine Gun - Must be .45 or 9mm and select fire.: Personally, I feel the subgun has surpassed its usefulness. However, if anyone still feels the need for one of these "legacy" weapons, I would reccomend a 9mm M16 (once again so that anyone trained with the standard infantry rifle would not need to take as much time to learn such another weapon). This would also have a Carbine URX and a magpul stock, as well as the sight options mentioned above. 5. Basic Infantry Light Machine Gun - Must be .223 and select fire.: M249 or a belt fed M16, if one4 could surpass the m249 in each and every area of performance or durability. 6. Basic Infantry Heavy Machine Gun - Must be .308 and select fire.: M240 or belt fed AR10 if one passes muster. 7. Basic Infantry Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 or .300 WM and bolt action.: M40 or improved M700 based rifle. 8. Basic Infantry Auxillary Sniper Rifle - Must be .308 and semi auto. Once again an AR10 or a M14. I feel if we stay with the M16 family (which I believe we will for the next decade or two), two or more weapons on the list (the most commonly issued) should also be part of the same family (Either AR15 or AR10 based). The reason for this is commonality of at least some parts and ease of training personnel on multiple weapons. For the sidearm, the P226 is somewhat simpler and somewhat more ergonomic than the Beretta (at least to me). If one wants to reduce the cost and to further simplify training and operation, the G17 would be a decent choice. However, I still feel the SIG is the superior weapon. A 1911 would still serve special operations ans special purposes as the standard sidearm should be of a NATO common round (and I don't see NATO adopting the .45). As far as machine guns and sniper rifles, i don't know as much as I would like about the use and operations of these weapons, so I thought we should stay with what we have for a savings on cost in both transitiona nd training. An adoption of M16 (or AR10) based weapons would take care of the ease of transiton training, but cost of development and adoption would probably be high as none of the previous entries of such wepaons have met with much success either in durability and performance or cost of manufacture. |

Only thing I'd equip them with is...
Political leadership with the balls to allow the military to just go out and get the job done with no interference from Washington. They *already* have a damn fine set of tools with which to choose from, they just need to be able to *use* the tools and techniques that us taxpayers have provided. Sorry, I'm still burned up over the "Mogadishi II" thread. -Gator |

What about some of those gas-piston ARs? ZM weapons, I believe?
As for the M-14 as a sniper weapon, I don't think so. You'd have to rebed it every few thousand rounds. As for the main sniper weapon, I'm in a knot, now. The M40A1 is a good system, and so is the M24. Put them both in .300 Win Mag, and you have a tie. Has anyone thought of the SIG P220? |

AR: M16A4
Accurate, reliable IF CLEANED (same for all guns), and modular enough to share parts with other choices. I wouldn't put a RAS on it, a front line infantry rifle doesn't need 2 flashlights, 3 lasers, 2 optics, and a bottle opener... Issue sight system would be the 4x ACOG with flip-up rear sight... (No batteries, some magnification to take advantage of the 20" barrel). Emphasis remains on single-shot aimed fire. Full-auto is for SMGs and MGs, or for cover-fire. Battle Rifle: AR-10 in 'A4' config, 20in barrel, with either a 4-12x or fixed 10x scope. I don't see a need for a M14-style battle rifle. However, a 'designated marksman' position can be quite useful. The AR-10 scoped would fit this role nicely... Select-fire would be an 'oh-shit' option that soldiers would be trained not to use unless the range had closed to the point where their optics were useless (in which case the DMR becomes a RPK-like 'not-quite-MG' weapon)... Infantry handgun: H&K USP in .45 Auto. The best of the 1911 and 92FS combined... It's either SA/DA or SA/C&L (IIRC you can cock-and-lock a USP) depending on settings, carries 12rds of .45, is made of metal, and has an exposed hammer (Glock is out due to the no-second-strike issue (hammerless single-action), other hammerless weapons excluded due to lack of single-action-only (cock&lock or hand-cock) capability). SMG: M4A1 in 9mm, with either 5.56 mag-well compatible mags (i.e. no mag-block), or a quick-removable (i.e. clamp-in, not pin-in) mag block... Mag capacity of 40rds. The main reason for this is a comonality of parts. Everything but the upper reciever & mags interchanges with the M16. Aside from that, most high-end SMGs are pretty comparable in performance, so the supply issues win... Also, this would be my nomination for a replacement 'carbine' type weapon for vehicle crews and the like... 9mm was originally designed as a carbine round, most of it's 'deficiencies' in pistols stem from being fired from 3-5in barrels. Issue ammo would be of the subgun-only, too-high-pressure-for-pistols variety, preferrably with an 'improved' bullet design specifically for use agaisnt body armor... If 5.56 was an option here, it might be worth considering, as IIRC it does better vs body armor than 9mm, even out of a 14in barrel... I'd probably also want a mini-SMG (MP5K, probably) for issue to helo & CAS aircrews, and others who may need more gun than a pistol, but don't have space for a M4. LMG: FN Minimi. It's the only one I know of that's still in production (the only other one I know of was the Stoner 63). Works well enough, anyway... GPMG/HMG: MAG58 Again, works as is... More 'modern' design than the MG42/M60... Sniper rifle Rem 700 derivative... M24 The M24 works well enough 'as is'... Sniper effectiveness is more soldier training than gun (given a 'decent' gun, which the 700 platform certainly is) Aux SR: No need for another .308 weapon, this item should either be lighter (SPR) or heavier (Barrett M82 .50BMG). Also, my 'battle rifle' choice sort-of fills this role (diff between DM position and 'sniper' is additional training and the method of employment)... If forced to stick with .308, I'd use the same gun as the DMR role, just with more training... 'Sniper' gets a 700, 'Spotter' gets an AR-10 or SPR... |
|
Quoted: I cant believe no one has chosen the Robinson M96 yet for item #1. View Quote Why bother... Not available in full-auto, and besides, the Robinson Arms rifle is just a civillianized Stoner 63 (Stoner 63 system was designed to be an AR, DMR, and GPMG all on the same base gun. Robinson used part of the design in their M96, which is why the mag-well can be attached on top. They never made it a true 63-semiauto-clone, though... that would have been nice)... |

I don't know why I am playing, but WTF.
M4 It works, don't fuck with it. M4 Battle Rifle doesn't fit in with our doctrine Sig 226 Almost went Glock, but just couldn't do it. M4 No convential forces require a sub-machine gun. Vast majority of spec ops don't either. Its a sexy toy and most spec ops are going to the M4 anyway. KISS Negev. SAWs are wearing out very quickly and do have a number of issues. (Though MWOs are fixing this) The Israelis are having a lot of success with the Negevs. I believe it the superior system FN MAG-Duh SR-25-Most combat snipers aren't going past 600 yards. SR-25 will get you there. Sub-MOA is all that is required for combat sniping. The difference between M24 and SR 25 is pretty small. Most army/marine snipers aren't as accurate as either weapon. Maybe add a bolt lock if brass throwing is an issue. SR-25-Two birds with on stone. Overall, don't go with too many systems. KISS KISS |
