MOSUL, Iraq - Attackers slit the throats of two American soldiers who were waiting in traffic in this northern Iraqi city on Sunday, witnesses said. Another soldier was killed in a roadside bombing north of Baghdad

The bodies of the two male soldiers could be seen lying in the street next to their vehicle in Mosul's Ras al-Jadda district with their throats cut. The U.S. command in Baghdad said it had no information on the incident.

Two US soldiers have been killed in Iraq's city of Mosul after attackers slit their throats, witnesses say.

A spokesman for the US 101st Airborne Division in Mosul confirmed the deaths, without giving any further details.

Throats slit?  WTF?

Now the news outlets are saying they were shot.

If they were attacked with blades, how does THAT happen?  What is going on over there?  If I were deployed to Iraq, EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THOSE IRAQIS would be a potential killer.  I would NEVER let my guard down.

How in the HELl did that happen?  Aren't all of our troops still armed with rifles...or at LEAST an M-9?  How in the HELL does an Iraqi with a blade EVER get close enough to use it?

I am just completely flummoxed on this...somebody please explain.

God that is so fucking terrible...I am just sick.

Either way...our guys need to be more careful.

Apparently some guys walked up/pulled up, started shooting, dragged them out, and slit their throats right there in the street....

Reading a book about the Yom Kippur war it was somewhat shocking to realize that saving face was the prime motivator for those in power like Sadat and Syria's Assad.  It seemed that literally, if they could not prove to themselves and others they were capable of defeating Israel then hope was gone, for them and their country.  How the hell do you get people like this to the peace table?  As we've seen with Arafat, even if they get there and sign they are not to be trusted.

Sometimes it makes me feel really really bad. Saw a friend i served with on th news last night. It just tears your heart up nowing you can't do ANYTHING. I know that how I feel is nothing compared to the families of the guys killed over there. Their friends and relatives. Kids they grew up with.
And those of you saying they let their guard down, and that it was their fault I say FUCK YOU!! You aren't there and have no idea what you are saying. NONE! Honor their deaths and remember them. Don't ever foget what they gave us.

Sorry to be a dick. I'm kinda fired up right now. This stuff is hard to see.

Mosul was a Kurdish town.

Saddam expelled them and stocked the town with thousands of fellow Sunni's and ex-soldiers in order to keep control of the oil fields surronding the city.

Mosul was taken by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan forces last March.

We told them to leave again because we were afraid they would commit genocide against the Sunnis.

If this is the way the Sunnis want to treat us than policing of the town needs to be turned back over to the PUK. And let the blood flow...

Folks, I vote that we just wipe the middle east off the face of the map. Since it's inception, there has been non-stop warfare. Terrorists operate out of there, half of all the free world's hostile neighbors are there.

Hell. There was an article with evidence that Mohommad was on opium the night he conjured up the Muslim religion.

MOSUL, Iraq - Iraqi teenagers dragged the bloody bodies of two American soldiers from a wrecked vehicle and pummeled them with concrete blocks Sunday, witnesses said, describing a burst of savagery in a city once safe for Americans. Another soldier was killed by a bomb and a U.S.-allied police chief was assassinated.

The U.S.-led coalition also said it grounded commercial flights after the military confirmed that a missile struck a DHL cargo plane that landed Saturday at Baghdad International Airport with its wing aflame.

Nevertheless, American officers insisted they were making progress in bringing stability to Iraq (news - web sites), and the U.S.-appointed Governing Council named an ambassador to Washington — an Iraqi-American woman who spent the last decade lobbying U.S. lawmakers to promote democracy in her homeland.

Witnesses to the Mosul attack said gunmen shot two soldiers driving through the city center, sending their vehicle crashing into a wall. The 101st Airborne Division said the soldiers were driving to another garrison.

About a dozen swarming teenagers dragged the soldiers' bodies out of the wreckage and beat them with concrete blocks, the witnesses said.

"They lifted a block and hit them with it on the face," Younis Mahmoud, 19, said.

Another teenager, Bahaa Jassim, said some looted the vehicle of weapons, CDs and a backpack.

"They remained there for over an hour without the Americans knowing anything about it," he said. "I ... went and told other troops."

Television video showed the soldiers' bodies splayed on the ground as U.S. troops secured the area. One victim's foot appeared to have been severed.

The frenzy recalled the October 1993 scene in Somalia, when locals dragged the bodies of Marines killed in fighting with warlords through the streets.

In Baqouba, just north of Baghdad, insurgents detonated a roadside bomb as a 4th Infantry Division convoy passed, killing one soldier and wounding two others, the military said.

In Baghdad, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt confirmed the Mosul deaths but refused to provide details.

"We're not going to get ghoulish about it," he said.

The savagery of the attack was unusual for Mosul, once touted as a success story in sharp contrast to the anti-American violence seen in Sunni Muslim areas north and west of Baghdad.

In recent weeks, however, attacks against U.S. troops have increased in Mosul, raising concerns the insurgency is spreading.

In this image taken from video, US soldiers, center background, inspect the body of a fellow soldier in Mosul, Iraq Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 after gunmen shot two American soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division as they drove through the city center to another U.S. garrison, sending their vehicle crashing into a wall according to witnesses. Then, teenagers dragged their bodies from the vehicle and pummeled them with concrete blocks.

NPR yesterday was reporting on some regime holdouts that were paying $500 for the killing of a US soldier, and $1000 for something spectacular. How do we compete with that in a place where nobody's got two dimes to rub together and the people are basically savages?

And where is the overwatch for these guys? JSTARS, AC-130s, etc. Has someone forgotten that we invaded these people?

And one vehicle by itself? Someone should have their ass kicked for that. Every westerner in Iraq is a target, and anyone who forgot that has surely been reminded now.

The insurgency is spreading because we have shown weakness to these scum, in country and back at home. That also is what led to the 9/11 attacks IMO.

The losers who compare this to Viet Nam forget how the loss of unity here at home gave the enemy the belief that they could defeat us. Unfortunately, we have an election year coming up and GWB would see many more mutilated american corpses rather than risk losing the '04 election. His acquiescence to the liberals in the past year may prevent me from voting for him. He has not, apparently, learned from his father's bungled tenure as president.

Tactically, sending single vehicles out through the cities of Iraq is almost criminal. WTF is the military leadership thinking over there?

This went from disarming and overthrowing a dictator and a threat to the US, to "liberating" and "establishing democracy".

THIS is the problem! I thought Les Aspen and clinton were bad, but Rumsfeld and Bush sure as fuck are getting damn near the breaking point with me!

IF these politicians had some balls, our men wouldn't be getting murdered like this on a daily basis. It's their fucking muslim month of ramadan and what does the US do? Eases the curfews, patrols, and kisses ass.

STUPID FUCKS!!!!

These goddamn politicians and to a lesser extent pussy whipped commanders need to grow some balls and take a hard line stance after this for sure as fuck! I for one see MY support for this administration going down because they REFUSE to deal with this in the way that they SHOULD!

Goddamn I'm so fucking pissed.

This butchery is proof we're in the right place - now we just need the right response.

In Baghdad, Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt confirmed the Mosul deaths but refused to provide details.

"We're not going to get ghoulish about it," he said.

Why not?

Is it any less important for the American people to know how their brothers, sons and fathers are being butchered in Iraq than for them to know the details of the Lacy Peterson or OJ Simpson murder???

Is it less important for the American people to see these pictures every 30 minutes, all day for weeks on end like they showed the Rodney King beating???

Is there a particular reaction that you DON'T want the American people to have upon seeing their brothers, sons or fathers beaten with bricks and butchered by jackals in a war against MUSLIMS!!???

American media virtually crucifies General Boyten for weeks because he simply speaks his religious beliefs in a church.

We court martial Colonel West because he uses force on a prisoner to save his men from being slaugherted in an ambush.

Yet this FUCKTARD of a General wants to stay silent while HIS men are barbarically massacred and dismembered - so as not to be too "ghoulish" for fear he might be offensive!?!???

FUCK THAT BASTARD!!!

His own men have been shot, beaten, dragged through the street, stoned and dismembered and he wants to be POLITE!!???

This sack of shit General HAS to be a Clinton-promoted General! I'd bet my name on it!!!

I'm actually just as pissed at our response (or lack thereof) as I am at the MoslemMaggots who did it.

I am moreso. Afterall, you can't expect scum to be anything other than scum, can you? However, for the Commander in Chief to act in a manner that trivializes the lives of US servicemen is reprehensible. I guess maybe we shouldn't expect politicians to be anything but politicians either.

No fault on Rumsfeld here from my point of view. I suspect he knows what needs to be done and would do so if given the opportunity.

Taking the moral high ground is a crock of shit. They need to be taught respect. Either respect us as people who came to your country to force out a dictator that controlled everything about your life. If they fail to respect us for that then its time for them to be taught respect of the death we can bring them anytime and anywhere. Screw being the good guys. Our military needs to look to the past and see that we werent always bitchs.

Von Clausewitz wrote that "War is politics by other means," but no war was EVER won using politically correct tactics. We have to make this kind of thing too costly to even be around, let alone take part in.

Witnesses should be snatched up and processed for information on the perpetrators. Anyone who would see US troops being bludgeoned to death with concrete blocks and merely stand by and watch should be considered an accomplice anyway, so no great loss if we lose a few during questioning.

Send Paul Bremer home and make LtCol West the administrator of Iraq. He's obviously got the sack for the job. If the Iraqis want to Mau Mau, we need to give them a counterinsurgency that will blaze a trail into history along with the Rhodesian Selous Scouts, Black Jack Pershing in the Phillipines and Sherman's march through Georgia.
