Can't afford it really, but couldn't afford not to.
2003 Altima S, certified pre-owned, 20,300 miles. Book $18,000ish Paid $16,400 plus $1,370 for a bumper to bumper warranty that covers 6 years or an additional 80,000 miles. Total cost out the door $19,100. My other option was a 2004 Altima S at invoice cost, $18,806 plus tax, title and registration for around $20,500 and only a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty.

The neons are nice, but that Nissan will be runnin long after the Dodge has bit the dirt. They build those Altimas about a mile from my house. |

yep the Altimas are pretty good, my dad has a 2003 as well. The 3.5L's are damn pocket rockets but eat more gas.
Have you seen those Pathfinder Armada's yet?

The Armada is frickin HUGE! 13 miles to a gallon.... doh!
I'm a little nervous about another $19,000 in debt but I just keep telling myself there should be nearly no maintenance costs for the next 6 years... |

6yrs/80,000 miles you must not get out much.
I have the same problem as you. 6'2" and headroom is a plus, or just gotta recline the driver's seat to see under the roof line. |

You could handle a Neon, no problem. I'm 6'5", 270lbs and I drove a 1996 Neon for four years. 65k miles on it and the only major problem it had was the cooling fan crapped out. Aside from that it ran like a champ. Sold it to my sister-in-law a couple years ago and it's still going just fine. BTW, good call on getting a slightly-used car. Much better value than buying new. I'll take my own advice the next time I buy.

LOL, the Altima is a chick car? At least I didn't buy a Beetle or a Cabriolet... I bought it because: 1. All reliability reports from CR, to JD Powers to Edmunds say it is an awesome car. 2. I know I got a screaming deal on it. 3. My fat ass fits comfortably in it. 4. She drives real nice. 5. I drive my cars into the ground, currently I'm driving my 91 Buick Regal that we bought in 92. This puppy will last. 6. Well, just to annoy you...

Concerning the 80,000 mile warranty, are you absolutely sure its for 80,000 additional miles and not just 80,000 miles total?
The reason I ask is alot of times dealers confuse people into thinking the former when in truth the warranty is only the latter. Definitely worth checking into. Congratulations on the new purchase though. |

Well, I am currently looking into buying a new car myself. I will be spending about the same dollars and will have no problem spending an extra $1600 on an extended warrenty.
Remember, it's only wasted money if I never need to use it...but then again I will have piece of mind. AFter all. I have payed over $2000 in the last 3-4 years in car insurance and I never had to use that either. So by some of your guys thinking that was a waste of mind also. on used cars u can buy aftermarket warranties that kick in after the factory ends for much less than the dealers
GE capital and some other ones are real good |

Some warranties will refund the money if you don't have a claim during the period. My Credit Union has one like that. It's hip.

It was a corporate fleet vehicle and the garage has done all the work on it - oil changes and such. I don't consider the extended warranty to be a waste of money. $1,300 is less than the cost of a tranny. My Buick's tranny shit out at 80,000 miles and cost $1,800 to fix. My fear was making payments beyond the warranty period and be stuck putting the payment in plus maintenance costs. It is an additional 80,000 miles. You can read the details on Nissan USA's website it is the Gold preferred warranty package.
This other extended warranties. Who services them? Do you have to lay out the money for the repair and then be reimbursed? Do they pick and choose what shop can do the work? Are there enough locations authorized to do the work? With Nissan's warranty I go to any Nissan dealer, hand them the card and covered work is done, end of story. Anyway, this is how I could afford to do it. My father, who buys a half-dozen vehicles a year for his business, green-lighted the purchase. Had he even hesitated I would have backed off. Somebody has to explain to me how a certified and warrantied vehicle to 100,000 miles was the wrong choice over a new vehicle with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty that cost more. |

I'm happy for you. You made a nice choice, Nissan Altimas are pretty tough cars. I had one of their previous generation Altimas and put 136,000 miles without a hitch. Only problem I had was with some acid rain & paint oxidation. But I think all 2002 & up Nissans have a water based paint that helps with these issues.
I just bought new Accord LX for $17,100. I'm paying $269/month for 5-years. My Dad's Accord lasted him 13-years and NOTHING went wrong on it. Dodge Neon...please! I worked for Daimler/Chrysler years ago. Believe me, I would'nt drive one if they gave it to me. Nothing like a THREE-SPEED transmission on the highway! Dodge is out of touch with reality! |

Nice car, HR! I had a Nissan Pathfinder and it was bulletproof. Had something like 130k on it when I got rid of it, and I would have kept it, but when it was made (1990) they used a lot of recycled metal for auto bodies and failure to prepare the metal properly led to lots of rust problems later. So, although it ran great, the body was starting to look a little rough. I sold it before it got TOO bad, and got a Jeep Liberty. I love the Jeep, but still miss the Pathfinder sometimes. I worked for a guy who had an older Altima that had very high miles and went forever. He recently traded in for a new one.
