Yes, the jerkoff from "Friends."
Anyway when I first saw hime in "Band of Brothers" I was a bit annoyed at him being cast in some tough guy DI role. I thought he was the worst Lee Ermy wannabe I had ever seen.
Anyway I just started reading the book Band of Brothers, having read "The Wild Blue", "D Day" and "Citizen Soldiers", also by Stephen Ambrose.
As it turns out Schwimmer in the role of Capt. Sobel was brilliant casting. Sobel was every bit the pathetic, sadistic, chickenshit, overbearing asshole who barely satisfied the physical requirements for Easy Co. that Schwimmer very accurately portrayed.
I have respect for Schwimmer for willingly portraying such a univerally disliked person of history (easier to play a bad guy who is fiction). Also the fact that Sobel was jewish (as is Schwimmer I believe) made it even more of a unPC role to play, especially in light of the fact that many people used Sobel as a basis for their anti semetic views. Althought this was not emphasised in the series as much as the book, probably for sake of brevity rather than PC.
Anyway as I read this book I have learned that Schwimmers portrayal was dead on and quite a brilliant piece of acting on his part.
Finally, if you likes BOB, then you have to read the book. It is amazing just how accurate the series was. Even movies largely based upon fact like Blackhawk Down did not run as true to actual events or the book as this series.
I am forever grateful that Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg (and obviously Ambrose) got it done.
