I like AR's and love to shoot them but I am getting geared up over this M14 project I'm contemplating.  Not to bash the 5.56 but I shot a 30-06 WWII surplus AP round completely through a utility pole when I was younger.  It was one of the tall 40' ones too I figure the part I shot through was at least 14" in diameter.  I was really impressed with that.  My wheels are really cranking now!

308/30-06 same ballistics with 150gr ball ammo.
20 round mag vs 8 rnd enBloc clip.
cheaper ammo.
I could use ammo commonality to "justify" a M700 VS in .308.

Hey these thing don't multiply like AR's and Garands do they?

Usually can find it at gunshows.  You can also buy the 30 cal pulled surplus and reload your own to milspec.  Try here:

Interesting. The definition of AP is ammo for handguns, but the list includes rifle ammo. WTF?

Thats because the rifle ammo is included as handgun ammo if there is ANY pistol that fires that round.  In the case of .223, there are the Bushmaster or AR pistols.  In the case of .308, there is the Lone Eagle.

Go figure.

Because of folks who have made pistols in rifle calibers.

The magic of legislation by interpretation.  The ATF takes the position that if a legal handgun was ever chambered for a caliber, that the caliber is now a handgun caliber.  Thus, the Thompson Contender(and similar handguns), offically classifies many 'rifle' calibers as handgun calibers.

You might also be asking where is all the 7.62*39 military ammo.  The answer lies with Olympic arms.  They made a couple prototype pistols 10 years ago chambered for 7.62*39.  Thus, it all gets classified as pistol ammo. In the case of military 7.62*39, it all becomes AP as all milspec *39 is mild steel core.  Say bye bye to approval on an import form...

Did you notice that you can legally buy .30-06 AP, but not 7.62 Nato AP?  Another reason to get a Garand instead of an M1A/M14.

Valkyrie, you said you are contemplating an M14.  Full auto, huh.

Do you have a Garand?  There is history there if it is USGI, but the M1A that you can buy has no history, unless it is USGI M14, and even then there is not much history.

No not full auto, and yes I do have some addiction caused by these Garands!
