Hello, my name is Mike and i am 19 and currently a sophomore in college.  this past summer i was considering purchasing an AR-15 over the internet.  I know of a family and the father is a registered FFL dealer.(class 2 manufactures, and class 3 dealers)  what is the age requirement (in ohio).  the one kid i talked to thought it was 21 for an assault rifle.  i know in ohio its 18 for a rifle adn 21 for a pistol (compared to 18 for both in PA)         so, whats the age limit?

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the boards.  I don't believe there's a difference between what you consider an "assault rifle" and a regular rifle, also referred to as a long gun on the yellow forms (4473's).  For the record, the ar15 you're considering is simply a rifle, i.e. a long gun.  Here in CA, the requiment for a rifle is to be at least 18 and a clean record.  Handguns require you to be 21 and you must first pass a test.

My guess is, it's similar in your neck of the woods.

Remember, you're not buying an "assault rifle" since those, by definition, are fully automatic, bullet spraying, baby killing, shot-from-the-hip, rambo-style weapons that civilians like you and I are too dumb (or not rich enough) to own.

Good choice on the ar15 platform.  You'll enjoy it.  If you keep hanging out here, though, you'll spend more than your keep on that dang rifle.

Well for the terms you used.......
To get an assault rifle you need to be 21 get a extensive background check, fingerprinted then after 6 months if your approved you can go out and buy a registered assault rifle. Now if you just want a semiauto AR15 you just have to be 21 and pass a quick background check.

Assault rifle = full auto
AR15 = just an semiauto rifle (that looks mean)

Wrong, 18 not 21. You may be thinking about hte age for handguns which in oregon at least is 21.
Long guns you need only be 18.

Cape_Hunter, i think he is talking about a good old F/A (full auto) M-16.

In the People's Republik of Maryland, a pre-ban "assault" rifle is a restricted firearm and you have to be 21.

Good choice on the ar-15.  They are wonderfully accurate and reliable weapons.  However, you will soon need an AK in addition to the "good guy" gun that you are getting.  They are cheap and just as fun to shoot as an AR.

BTW, I bought my first rifle(AR-15) last april, right after I turned 19.  I'm sure it's 18 pretty much everywhere unless your state has some weird laws.

BTW, what type of AR-15?

"Purchasing an AR-15 over the internet"
Sale laws of new guns vary from state to state but generally(federal law ?)prohibits the sale of new guns except thru a FFL dealer. No mail order ect. What you see on the internet is an ad not an offer to directly sell.
See your local sporting goods store for info in your state

18.

Although that's to buy one. It's perfectly fine for kids like me to own them if given to us by our parents.

alright thanks.  yeah, what i'm looking for is the semi-auto version of the AR-15.  i'm most likely going to go with bushmaster, i've heard they're good.....and dont seem to be as expensive as a colt.  whats a good price i can expect to pay?  oh, i dont remember exactly but i think there's an A2 and A3?  either way, i want the one with the removable top rail so i can put a scope on it if i want.
thanks.

Deer,
I read what he wrote and I am correct. Reread my quote, and you will see the I had highlighted red the 21 refering to owning just a plain old ar15, semi auo rifle.

Soccermike,
I also agree that you have chosen a great platform as what you can so is limited only to your checkbook and imagination. YOu can get into a great start for under 800 and depending on what route you go cheaper. Check out the EE on the board, as there are many members here that peddle guns and offer some great deals. Stay away from any of the Hesse arms guns as the comapany and the guns are crap. Good luck.

I've seen them go for about $750 from CDNN Investments and some gun stores have them around $825 or so.  The age is 18, not 21 as others have mentioned and you need to have a clean record.

Your next question will probably be, "can I shoot high capacity mags in my gun?"  The answer is yes, even though it is a post ban rifle, preban mags are allowed.

No you cannot put a flash suppressor, bayonet lug or collapsable stock on your gun, but you can put a muzzle brake and adjustable stock on your gun.  If you buy a preban, you can do anything you want to it.

Last thing I'll mention is that I'm curious as to what you mean by buying one over the internet?  Do you mean an FFL transfer or are you asking about buying a rifle from me (for example) and me just sending it directly to you?

"purchasing an AR-15 over the Internet"....soccermike, I think if you hang out here for a while, and learn and listen to some of the more informed and cooler heads here (I don't count myself among them...)the very idea of "purchasing an AR-15 over the Internet" will seem like a pretty loaded (no pun intended) concept. It's not as easy a process as it sounds.

An assault rifle and an assault weapon are two different things legally, depending on where you live. It's a crazy quilt of definitions out there, but generally an assault rifle has full-auto capability, necessitating a Class III federal license. I imagine that you'd have to be at least 21 to get that.

Check with your local gunstore. Don't ask the police- they might tell you not to buy any guns! The police are not always the best place to get advice about guns, since most cops are not gun aficionados, and aren't always up to date in their knowledge on the myriad of contradictory federal and state gun laws in this country.

You, of course, have to have an FFL to FFL transfer on this kind of interstate transfer of modern firearms, and then there might be state regulations you must observe as well. You must undergo -and pass- a Federal background check at the point of transfer to you before you are allowed to take possession of any kind of such modern gun.

Just for anybody else who might be reading: if you are someone who is prohibited from buying a gun, you are committing a crime just in trying to buy a gun.

That's the law.

I dunno Balzac- I remember some of your first posts- it was a tad iffy on what side of the fence you seemed to be on (yes, I've been here a while...). I took his query at face value, but added a caveat (Latin for "beware") to anybody looking on who was trying to get us to advocate or do something illegal. THAT I would never do.

I don't know what the laws are in Ohio, but generally you can buy a rifle when you are 18.  Your "internet order" will have to be sent to a FFL dealer to handle the necessary transfer paperwork.  Your friend's father will know what he can and can't do.

Bushmasters are good rifles and it appears that you want an A3 version for more precise mounting of optics.  $850 is a pretty reasonable price for one.

Slipjoint, the ordinary citizens (subjects) of Kalifornistan can't by AR15s.  Sales are banned by Roberti-Roos and SB23.

I'm 19 too, and I just bought my first AR-15, i'm actually waiting for my background check to go through, Its a RRA M4 flattop, I saw my rifle last night when i was filling out the papers. Hopefully I can get it today.

I read somewhere on the BATF site it says you have to be 18 to buy a rilfe and 21 to buy a handgun and full auto rifle, but it also says if you want a handgun you just have to have your parents buy it for you and a note saying they allow you to use the handgun whenever you are using the handgun. Something like that, go look in the FAQ's on the BATF site to be sure.

THOF, I live about an hour north of you, still in NC.  Aparrently, your FFL is full of it.  You have to be 18 to purchase long guns, period.  As long as the rifle's bbl is over 16", or the shotgun's bbl is over 18", you are good to go.

My advice is to go to your local gun shop and ask somebody behind the gun counter.

Have you looked at rock river arms at all?
They are quite good and their customer service is superb.

I bought a Colt Preban on my 16th birthday. In the 17 months since then, I added three ARs to the collection. I sold the Colt though.

All with my father there to make it legal.

None are papered.

Good that they are not papered.  Bad that you sold the Colt.  Really bad that you just said that on the 'net.  I will now send my JBTs to your house.  They will roll up in a back van.  There will be reporters.  You will be accused of having child pornography.  But now will be recovered after you place of residence spontaneously combusts.  You may now return to your reguarly scheduled ARF.com

Keep unpapered guns unpapered.

Why is it bad that I sold the Colt? It had big pins, it was a PITA.

If you're wondering, all of it was done legally, I don't conduct the transactions, merely set a price and turn it over to my father.

A troll could be a number of things.  I think posters were referring to the legality of the questions you were asking. As possible " Trick questions "

On this site we have new people who show up from time to time looking to trap others into making statements that are contrary to the law of the land and there by trying to discredit the law abiding gun owners. This happens here because this site is a great source of info. It happens normally around the time of some incident like the DC killer’s trials that are now on going in VA or some other event that draws attention to an AR15.

The topic of this thread is about the age requirement for owning an "assault rifle"...I think the correct post should have been...the age requirement for "semi-automatic" rifles.

An assault rifle is a rifle that has a select fire control switch....in other words...a "Machine Gun"  You ain't getting a machine gun at age 18! Well, you could but thats if the fedz approve your application, and then, if you have enuff money to afford buying one.

Assault rifles are usually purchased by class 3 dealers and LEO's.  Sorry kids!
