Well is it just plinking ammo? I reload 155 grn because I dont want to kill myself when I shooting alot of rounds. I use 180' in my carry gun just because I want to sling as much lead as I can.

For what? For ipsc, I use the 180gr.JHP and the 200gr. lead. At home the federal hydra shock 155gr.JHP

I was thinking of ball ammo for a battle type atmosphere.

I really have a hard time defending any certain grain of ammo. If you hit someone like you should its going to cause a bit of damage. Specially in hardball I doubt the difference between 150-180 grns are going to be noticeble

165gr. in 40S&W, and 180gr. for 10mm are ideal weights, I believe. I have used 180gr. in 40S&W but feel it's at the upper limit due to it's bullet length and the chance of dangerous pressure levels if the bullet gets pushed back into the case too far.

I like the 180's myself. I was able to put huge holes in 2 phone books stacked together with them. In fact I found that the jacket seperated halfway through. However, in a shooting situation I would rather have the jhp's to avoid over penetration.

As Atomic Punk pointed out, the 180 grain bullets don't leave much room for powder in the case.
With a 165 grain FMJ bullet, you'll still have plenty of sectional density plus a little more velocity to punch through barriers. |

A couple of years back there was an article in the American Rifleman on various loads for the .40 S&W. According to the tests they ran, the 165 grain bullet performed the best. I'll try to dig up the article and send you more info. |

I shoot a lot of .40 and prefer the 155 gr. The Border Patrol is involved in a lot of gunfights, and they are happy with the load.

If wanting ball ammo choose the 165gr. UMC as it's the strongest of all commercially produced FMJ ammo. Federal, CCI and PMC 165gr. FMJ are all reduced velocity target loads. Speer Lawman has a 155gr. & 165gr. FMJ load but I'm not sure about the ballistics.
The 180gr. loads are your second best choice as nearly all those are full velocity loads. |

165gr. JHP Cor-Bon very good grain size at 1150fps so it's a good velocity and stopping power.
