There have been a million city slicker trunk gun threads, more redneck truck gun threads, but I haven't seen a tractor gun thread yet. Ive been thinking about what would be best for the occasional groundhog i see in the field. My AO is populated enough that I don't want anything that will travel too far so I was thinking a pistol caliber ar pistol might be ideal for the occasional >50 yard groundhog. Looking for input on options. What is your tractor gun? How do you carry it? Bonus internet points for pics of your tractor gun mounted to your tractor.

I have my grandfather's tractor gun he used to shoot jackrabbits.

It's a 10 shot JC Higgens .22 revolver.

I used it last week to kill a rattlesnake on my mother's porch.

Used an SAR1 for a while but it was in KS and it wouldn’t reach far enough. 223 did better but dust was too much. If I were doing it again I would got single shot in at least 6.5 Grendel. Maybe Thompson.

I have a Ruger American Ranch rifle in 5.56 mounted vertically and Rough Rider 22 mag revolver that is usually riding along as well.

Mine for bush hogging was a 9shot 22lr revolver... but I wasn't really worried about bigstuff just snakes and coons, cause we had chickens. No real coyote presence where I grew up.

My old man worked 40 years as farm hand. he used a savage break open in .22 hornet. Many coyotes died

Uncle used an antique lever .30-30.

Cousins that run the place now still use it.

My dealer showed me his tractor gun. 7.5" xcr SBR with a can that I don't recall. With that short of a barrel it's basically a 22mag but oh well.

Otherwise it's the 17HMR

The perfect cartridge for tractor guns and small varmints.

Easily run 1,000 rounds a year through it.  2,700 alone last year.

AR, 20" bull barrel, 4.5-14 VXIII Leupold, 20 round mag as 30 sticks out too far.

Tempted to switch to a pistol, love a 5.7 FN if you could put a scope on it.  Might go XP100 .221 Fireball.  Pistol just easier to deal with in tractor or windrower.

Mainly shoot coyotes, occasional raccoon, prairie dog, badger, porcupines.

Dad jumped in the tractor and left me this review of it

Okay, the rifle you left in the 6420, great trigger, good loads blew the dogs into pieces, scope is weird, shot up all the ammo put it in the white shop next to the 17

Sometimes a 16" 5.56 AR, sometimes a 12" 5.56 AR, sometimes an 18" 6.5 Grendel, sometimes a G19.....it varies a lot.

Zero involved with moving a suppressor around where they're legal. Tractor shots are typically quick, I will never carry an unsupressed rifle around again.

Why?

Are we shooting deer from a tractor?

Obvious answer is an actual "Tractor Gun."   The M1 Garands made by International Harvester after WWII and during Korea.

I use a nine foot harrow. The dust and bouncing would beat up any gun I own. I don’t even carry a wallet. Harrowed one up and luckily found it later.

Yea, pretty much shooting small varmints so the .30-30 is a real shit choice.

A lot of the times I prefer the Saiga 12 so I can idle past the prairie dog and let him have a load of #8 birdshot and not even have to stop

I hate badgers!  Last fall I killed one with a tree branch as my weapon was in the tractor and I wasn't.  Took a lot of whacks to end him, quite the adrenaline rush for me, back to the basics.

None around here but the horse people would LOVE that. Assuming they dig holes deep enough to break a leg on a horse.

I’m still deciding. When I have a gun, it’s usually a beater bolt action 22. I’m thinking of upgrading to an AR though.

Oh yea, plenty.

12 gauge sucks, it might kill them but 50% easily run back down the hole.  Their fleshly little hide absorbs the impact really well.  When you see the pattern spread out all around the dog, you know it's going to be fatal, but it's not dramatic at all.

Nothing wrong with a 10/22 for use as a tractor gun.
