'Iceman' Grabs Shark to Save Men

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - An Icelandic fishing captain, known as "the Iceman" for his tough character, grabbed a 660-pound shark with his bare hands as it swam in shallow water toward his crew, a witness said Thursday.

The skipper of the trawler "Erik the Red" was on a beach in Kuummiit, east Greenland, watching his crew processing a catch when he saw the shark swimming toward the fish blood and guts -- and his men.

Captain Sigurdur Petursson, known to locals as "the Iceman," ran into the shallow water and grabbed the shark by its tail. He dragged it off to dry land and killed it with his knife.

"He caught it just with his hands. There was a lot of blood in the sea and the shark came in and he thought it was dangerous," Frede Kilime, a hunter and fisherman who watched from the beach, told Reuters by phone from Greenland.

Icelandic author and journalist Reynir Traustason, who knows the trawler captain, said the act was typical of the man.

"He's called 'the Iceman' because he isn't scared of anything," he said. "I know the people in that part of the world. They are really tough."

How can you possibly say that with any hopes of it being accurate?   The guy’s a veteran fisherman who probably knows more about marine biology than most academics.  He was most likely just protecting his ship’s haul from the shark – not his men.

Hmm, that applies to both, since we're both making assumptions.  Perhaps the water was very bloody from said fish being processed and all he saw was a shadow or a fin.  Now I know experts out there can tell a fish from it's fin, but either way, I stick to my doggie comparison.

Ive hunted sharks before. They are lighter than they look. I caught a 6 footer one time that only weighed 106. A 600+ pounder would be HUGE!

If you hook a 10 lb bass he can pull your boat to the middle of the lake before you get him landed, I can only imagine the power in a 660 lb fish.

Judging by the location, (water temps), and the blood in the water, and the weight of the shark, I'd guess it was an older juvenille, or young adult Great White.

Irregardless, just the weight alone, makes it quite a feat.

Let me remind y'all, a Great White will come up on the beach, just like a killer whale, after a seal.....

This reminded of a mom fighting off a bear from her garage.

One time my ggggg grand father was told by his boys that an ugly animal was after the hogs and for him to get his gun and kill it but he reminded the boys that it was wrong to shoot a gun on sunday but they insistead it was very ugly. He took the gun and the dogs and upon reaching the place the ugly animal hissed at the dogs and were in a fierce fight witht he animal. The old man watching and as his dogs fought withthe animal then grabbed it by the hind legs and held it while he had the boys bash its head in with rocks.
At one point during the fight the brute of an animal struck with his forepaws and fastned it in the ear of one of the dogs and then the old man took both hind legs into one of his hands and with the other pulled the paw from the dogs ear. they took the beast home and the old man reported to his wife that they killed the devil, she responded why john you killed a panther. He was also known for getting into fistfights and winning them even when he was in his 70's.

Someone mentioned a Lab and it brought to mind my first dog...she was a lab and one of the toughest.  One day we were riding our bikes through the typical route, (Ginger, that's her name, used to go with us everywhere), when we came upon 3 absolutely hostile dobermans...they were pretty much hanging out in the street with no owners to be found with hair raised and really big smiles if you know what I mean.  Ginger kept right by us on the bikes and when the biggest Doby tryed to take my brother on his bike she got in front of him, grabbed his neck, fought it out, biting his face got his neck again and had him on his back in about 20 seconds.  It was an absolutely awesome sight to see her with her hair raised and teeth showing for the first time and she was nearly 8.  A lab ruining a vicious doby's face and neck.  He was bleeding from both his nose and neck and the other 2 stood off and let us go...we couldn't praise her enough and she knew what she had done and was wagging her tail.  Since that day we saw the doby's on a few more occations and they pretty much ignored us thanks to a medium sized lab.  Damn I miss growing up with that dog!  When she was about 13 some woman swerved off the road and hit her...talk about grieving!  Didn't mean to hitchhike...sorry was just reminded by the toughness and lab references.

As for the shark:  I could take em.

I'd rather do it the way my late father described it when he was in the Corps during Korea. They were on one of their ships in the Carribean, and the guys on R&R would jump off the ship and swim around the ocean.....only AFTER one or 2 Marines were stationed on "shark patrol" with M14s!

Shark Bites Boy's Arm Off
Uncle Wrestles Shark To Shore
An 8-year-old boy was in critical condition Sunday after surgeons reattached one of his arms, retrieved from the gullet of a shark wrestled ashore by the child's uncle.

The shark attacked the boy as he swam at the Fort Pickens area of the Gulf Islands National Seashore in the Florida Panhandle.

The boy's uncle dragged the 7-foot shark to shore, then a ranger pried open its mouth with his police baton while a lifeguard pulled out the limb with forceps, National Park Service officials said.

"A ranger shot it in the head three times, which was enough to get the shark to loosen his jaws," Ranger John Bandurski said.

Three surgeons and a support team worked 12 hours through the night in shifts at Baptist Hospital to reattach the right arm.

It had been bitten off between the elbow and shoulder by what authorities believe was a bull shark.

Surgeons also repaired damage to the boy's right leg, which lost about a third of its lateral muscle mass.

Doctors said that it was too soon to say whether the child may have suffered neurological damage due to severe blood loss.  

"Amazingly this was a clean cut," plastic surgeon Dr. Ian Rogers said.

"Shark bites you don't anticipate will be clean cuts and this was surprisingly good and surprisingly clean, specifically since it came out of the shark's stomach."

The boy's parents declined comment and did not want to identify him or themselves.

Chief Ranger J.R. Tomasovic said that the boy had gone to the beach with an aunt and uncle, who were not identified, although a family member said they were from Mobile, Ala.

Immediately after the attack, relatives and emergency crews struggled to revive the boy about 250 yards west of Langdon Beach at the Gulf Islands preserve.

"It looked like the shark had been feeding on him," tourist Guy Ogburn said. "When I first got to him, his arm was off, his leg was wide open and there was no blood coming out,"

The boy was airlifted to the hospital, while his arm was taken by ambulance. En route, an Escambia County sheriff's escort that had been called in to help speed the delivery was involved in a traffic accident, Pensacola Beach volunteer firefighters said.

Dr. Jack Tyson, a general surgeon, said the boy had no pulse or blood pressure when he arrived at the hospital.

"I think he had almost completely bled out," Tyson said.

Dr. Juliet De Campos, an orthopedic surgeon, said that she had to shorten the boy's arm for the reattachment but that it should grow back to normal size. Rogers said that it would be months before a determination could be made of how much function the limb will have.

"It's our belief that (this) tragic incident has to do with visibility,'' Tomasovic said. "Sharks have very poor vision. When it's dark outside or the water is murky, if they see something splashing about they can't identify, they may strike."

The International Shark Attack File lists 79 confirmed shark attacks, 10 of them fatal, worldwide last year. That was the highest yearly total in the four decades since unprovoked shark encounters have been recorded.

Thirty-four of those attacks, nearly half, took place in Florida.

The shark attack also comes at the worst time of year for encounters between sharks and swimmers because the predators are hunting for fish along migratory routes, director Bob Hueter of the Center for Shark Research at the Mote Marine Laboratory said. "It's sort of the whole peak season for the sharks, and it's the height of the beach season."
